------ ---Gentle Derwent Water

Gentle Derwent Water 18-22 April
with Heidi

18th April

Eating out together on the first night in Keswick. This was another holiday of mostly good weather, fine views, and impromptu art in the landscape....!

We met on Friday night and went out to eat in Keswick together, finding seats outside in the warm weather and sunshine.

19th April

Group photo in the sun outside the Howe Keld Hotel.Saturday was still sunny, though the temperature had dropped a bit.

Walking along the far Derwent shore.

We set off straight from Keswick and walked through Portinscale along the edge of Derwent Water.

A break beside the water. A break beside the lake.

Huge carved hands - impromptu art - on the shore of Derwent Water. We walked past Brandelhowe, and through Manesty Park to the cafe at Shepherd's crag for tea cakes and ice cream.

Tea and ice cream at the tea room near Shepherds Crag.

We then went to look at the Lodore Falls which were more like a trickle after the dry weather in April. We returned to Keswick on the bus. A curry finished off the evening.

Looking at the trickle which was the Lodore Falls! In the woods near the Lodore Falls.

20th April

On the Keswick Launch to Sunday - still no rain in spite of forecasts to the contrary, so we took the opportunity to take the boat to Ashness Landing.

The much photographed Ashness Bridge.

From here we walked to Watendlath Tarn past Ashness Bridge and Surprise view.

At Surprise View - overlooking Derwent Water.

Surprise View.

Stream crossing below Watendlath. We had lunch at the Tarn, including tea and cake in the cafe.

Walking to Watendlath beside Watendlath Beck.

Some then returned to Keswick via the National Trust minibus, whilst the rest of us headed over to Rosthwaite in Borrowdale on the bridle path.

A break at the top of the rise from Watendlath. The view down into Borrowdale from the bridle path.

We took the bus back to Keswick, then did more and tea and cakes and shopping there!

21st April

Waterproofs for the morning rain.Monday brought the rain - a morning long shower only dampened our enthusiasm a trifle, and the rain stopped by lunchtime.

Probably the most dramatically situated stone circle in the country!

We were then rewarded with the wonderful views of the fells surrounding Castlerigg stone circle as well as the stone circle itself.

Castlerigg Stone Circle.

Some women then took the shorter direct way back to Keswick along the road to dry clothes and take a hot shower.

Returning to Keswick along the disused railway line.

The rest of us continued a bit further along the disused railway line where we saw a red squirrel jumping from tree to tree - perhaps it too was happy the rain had stopped!

Time for tea scones and cakes in Keswick and then final evening dinner in the pub and jokes and stories afterwards.

22nd April

Walking through Borrowdales woods from Grange. Some women had to leave us on Tuesday morning and it was a smaller group that took the bus to Grange and walked through the beautiful Low and High Hows woods.

Which way?!

The spring woodland flowers were out: we saw Violets, Wood Anemones, and Celendines.

Crossing the stepping stones near Rosthwaite.

Although colder than the previous days, the air was still and very calm and it was a lovely peaceful walk.

Da dahh!!

We walked as far as Rosthwaite, and crossed the Derwent River on the stepping stones, before catching the bus back to Keswick for final goodbyes.
