------ ---Gentle & Low Int Bavaria 2

Gentle & Low Int Bavaria 2 - 31 July-7 August
with Yvonne & Heidi

This was the second of two great Bavaria weeks was based at the Hotel Wittelsbach in Berchtesgaden, with a choice of gentle or low intermediate walks each day.

31st July

A view on the walk around town. After an early flight and sleepless night for many, we had some free time to sleep, unpack and find lunch.

On the walk around town.

We met at 3.30 for a leisurely 2 hour walk which took us around the town and into the surrounding meadows. On the way back we stopped at the Zur Post Hotel to sample the first of many beers and a first experience of local yodelling.

We all ate together at the Café Neuhaus and agreed the food was great. The weather had improved and we ate outside under the trees.

1st August

Kneipp Anlage - restoring circulation to your feet! Both groups took the bus out of Berchtesgaden for a walk back via the Maximiliansreitweg. The low intermediate group went further and took detour up to the café at Kastenstein for great views, welcome cooling drinks and sighting of squirrels.

The swimming lake at aschauerweihbad.

Both groups tried the first Kneipp Anlage - restoring circulation to your feet by dipping in cold water.

At the swimming lake.

We all stopped at the swimming lake at Aschauerweihbad for a pleasant hour and lunch.

Walking back via the ski jump.

The gentle group walked back via the ski-jump and watched in wonder as some kids launched themselves off the full size jump. The weather was hot and building to a storm but held off whilst we were walking.

We all met for a drink in the evening at the Hotel Post and some went to brave the Alpenhorn concert which was cancelled due to the rain. The yodelling would have to do.

2nd August

Walking up the stream towards Maria Gern.Today both groups walked from the hotel up through woods and beside a stream to the Maria Gern church.

Both here and on the way we sighted buzzards, lizards and dippers.

Maria Gern Church.

The low intermediate group continued uphill to the viewpoint at Marxenhohe for lunch and a circuit back down to Maria Gern.

Enjoying the view at the Maria Gern.

On return some folk went off shopping and others to the Watzmann Therme (swimming/spa complex). A welcome thunderstorm in the night brought some relief as it had been very warm.

3rd August

Setting off for the Almsbachklamm Gorge. Both groups set off together on the riverside path towards the Almsbachklamm Gorge.

In the Almsbachklamm gorge.

At the Kugelmühle (marble mill) we parted company and set off up the gorge via it's many steps and bridges.

The many bridges of the Almsbachklamm Gorge.

Walking up the gorge.

The gentle group got most of the way up then came back down to the café and large ice creams!

Tea and cake after the gorge!

The intermediate group continued up and out of the gorge to Dürlehen, with reputedly the best apple strudel in the area. We decided not to wait for the bus but to walk all the way back.

4th August

A day off from organised walking. The only problem seemed to be choosing what to do from the many options! The most popular choices were going to Salzburg for Mozart, music, culture and Sound of Music things or the trip up to the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest). Some just took it easy and had a quiet day on their own.

5th August

Konigsee - view up the lake from the boat.Today we took the bus down to the Königsee and had a peaceful trip across the lake in the electric boats (apart from the Flugelhorn rendition by the Echowall).

A view up towards Eiskapelle.

Both groups got off at St. Bartholomä - the gentle group doing a short circuit and the low intermediate group going up to the Eiskappelle, a cone of permanent snow lying under the impressive east wall of Watzmann.

First lunch stop at the Eiskapelle.Looking towards Watzmann.

After lunch at the Eiskapelle, the low intermediate group then took the boat back to Salet to walk to the lovely Obersee.

Looking up Obersee to Fischunkelalm.

Both groups met up at Fischunkelalm to laze in the shade by the lake.

Lunch looking back down Obersee from Fischunkelalm.

Sue doing the Bavarian thing!

There was a swim for several brave souls with Sue copying the man in lederhosen.

6th August

Gentle view towards Halsalm where the low intermediate group was walking.Today was sadly our last walking day. The gentle group did the Soleitungsweg, an almost level path which contours the mountain side and gives fantastic views to the Schärtenspitze and Watzmann peaks.

The alternative sun and shade were welcome on a hot day as was the homemade plum cake at Gerstreit.

We stopped at Soldenkopf for a great lunchtime view over Berchtesgaden.

Halsalm in Zanberwald.

Then it was back down to Ramsau with its picturesque church, breathing in of brine, very cold dipping of feet in the Kneipp Anlage or coffee.

Hintersee looking up to Halsalm.

The low intermediate group meanwhile had walked to Halsalm, beside Hintersee then up through the woods and meadows.

Walk up through the woods to Halsalm.

Group photo near the hut at Halsalm.

Coming up to the hut at Halsalm.

They took it steady, walking up through the meadows to the hut at Halsalm. This high alpine pasture gives fabulous views and there is, of course a little farm house selling milk and butter.

Looking back from the alp.

From here they could look back down to the valley below.

Cows on the alp.

Sitting outside the hut at Halsalm.

They stopped at Halsalm hut - where Sue had a schnapps - before lunch! From here they walked back down through the woods to the valley.

Walking back down from the alp.

Both groups met up on the bus back to Berchtesgaden. We had great homemade cakes back down at Hintersee especially the plum cake.

Last kaffee and kuchen!

In the evening we all went out together for a final dinner to the restaurant in the Kurhaus gardens.

Last night dinner at Kurhaus gardens.

The next morning after an early breakfast our coach took us back to Saltzburg Airport for our flights home - and hugs goodbye.

Last night dinner.

Women's Feedback

"The hotel and location were excellent. The choice of walks was varied and was tailored to meet individual needs on the whole. The scenery was breathtaking and there was the opportunity to swim or visit other local sights with lovely sunny weather. On the whole a really nice holiday". Eileen

"From day 1 to the end, I was happy, stimulated, relaxed and very content with my choice of holiday. The location was stunning, the walks were amazing, varied and thoughtfully planned to build up stamina through the week. The area offers so much in addition to the walking that I am recommending it to all my friends as a superb holiday destination. I have returned home with a higher level of fitness and feel so full of energy and revived. The friends I made formed a strong bond and we hope to meet up again for New Year. Congratulations to Heidi and Yvonne and to Diana - the formula works!" Sue

"Holiday surpassed my (high) expectations. Both guides were fantastic, accommodating and helpful. The walks were great and the area was wonderful". "I enjoyed the holiday! It was an adventure in a place I'd wanted to see. It met my expectations and the scenery surpassed it. The hikes and the guides were spectacular and the Hotel Wittelsbach was perhaps the best hotel I've ever stayed at". Linda

"I enjoyed it a lot. It exceeded my expectations. The accommodation was excellent, the guides were extremely caring and professional and sensitive to the needs of the group. I felt the mix of ability groups was very useful. It was helpful to be able to swap if needs be. The day off was a very good idea too. The guides gave some good options".

"Yes, the holiday did meet my expectations. The information provided beforehand gave an accurate and comprehensive picture of what the holiday would be like. The hotel was very good with nice rooms, discrete and considerate service and excellent breakfasts. The walks were enjoyable with lovely views and lots of interesting things to see etc. Both guides were professional and conscientious when anyone had a problem of any kind. They didn't 'mollycoddle' us and got the balance between care and treating us like responsible adults about right".

"I enjoyed the holiday. I saw and participated in many events that I wouldn't have because our guides suggested them. The town was interesting and the restaurants over all were good. The local public spa was great".

"The holiday definitely exceeded my expectations and I know this view was shared by most of the other people on the holiday. I came kind of expecting that the walks would dominate the holiday and the evenings would be fairly perfunctory before getting an early night in preparation for the next day. It was therefore a lovely surprise to find that the walks finished between 3.30 and 5ish each day, so there was time to chill, shop or read, before showering and getting ready to sample the local restaurants and bars. Some of us doing this last option progressively enthusiastically as the week went on! It was also great to have one day off to fit in some of the many tourist attractions available in the area. I had a brilliant time for the whole week. Walking is a beautifully unpressured way of getting to know people". Eileen G.
