------ ---Intermediate Great Langdale

Intermediate Great Langdale 28 Jul-1 Aug
with Marian

Marian's camera developed technical problems on the 3rd day of this holiday, so many thanks to Carmen and Mary for contributing their photos instead!

28th July

Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Great Langdale.Everyone arrived early at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel (ODG). Some women had arrived the day before to have some extra time in the area.

We discussed the plans for Friday and ordered dinner from the bar. There were some women who were new to WalkingWomen and some familiar faces also.

29th July

Group photo on the bridge over Stickle Ghyll. The weather wasn't forecast to be good today, and sure the sky was overcast when we woke.

Stickle waterfalls.

The route up Stickle Ghyll was gorgeous though, and the waterfalls were roaring as we headed up to Stickle tarn and Pavey Arc.

A break on the way up.Walking up beside Stickle Ghyll.

After some elevenses by the tarn, we headed across to wild Blea Rigg.

Stickle Tarn.

The cloud swirled around us occasionally, but we got great views down to Easedale Tarn before heading south along the rigg.

Margaret under her umbrella!

The only rain of the day came at lunchtime, and unfortunately, Margaret's umbrella was not large enough for us all to get under!

Misty view into Great Langdale.

Our return route took us down through the bracken to Chapel Stile where we stopped to buy weekend papers and treats from the Co-op. Some women also bought walking poles from the upstairs outdoor gear section.

Looking at Neolithic rock art.

At one point, we turned into the field opposite Tarn Howes to look at some Neolithic rock art - similar to Australian aboriginal art but in Langdale!

Later we relaxed in the ODG lounge, chatting and having a drink. Later we chose bar meals from the ODG Residents bar.

30th July

On the way up Side Pike.Today we headed up onto Side Pike and Lingmoor fell across the valley. It was a finer day and ideal walking weather.

Looking back at the Langdale Pikes and ODG.

On Side Pike.

Marian coming through Fat Mans Agony!

To get from Side Pike to Lingmoor Fell you have to pass between a rock and a cliff without your rucksack - locally called "Fat Man's Agony". However, no walking woman has ever failed to get through (it actually looks narrower than it is!)

Coming over a stile on Lingmoor Fell.

We strode out across the top of the fell, with wonderful views of the Langdale Pikes and Wetherlam. Enjoying the view on Lingmoor Fell.

There Buzzards and Hawks hunting and dragonflies skimming the pools.

A break on Lingmoor Fell.

Walking down the other side of Lingmoor Fell.

Descending past old quarry workings (a touch of industrial archaeology here!) we reached the ancient woodland of Baysbrown woods.

Walking to Elterwater.

With time in hand, we followed the river path to visit the Britannia Inn at Elterwater for some divine hot chocolate.

Wig wams in Great Langdale.

From here we returned to the ODG through the Great Langdale valley - in time for showers and a drink before dinner.

31st July

Starting up the path to Harrison Stickle. The weather forecast for today was good and our legs were now tried and tested. So off we set to walk the Langdale pikes of Harrison Stickle and Pike O Stickle.

This is where the Neolithic axe factories pictured in the rock art are to be found. (It's also where Marian's camera packed up).

On Harrison Stickle.Marians camera is starting to go!

The route took us up on a narrow path beside the waterfalls of Dungeon Ghyll with stunning views of Great Langdale below us.

Then up again onto Harrison Stickle, where it seemed like a good time for a snack and a summit photo.

From here we could see where we had walked on day 1.

Pike O Stickle. (Carmen Kutar)

Pike o Stickle was only 15 minutes walk away and some of us scrambled up onto the top for more views whilst others preferred to wait at the bottom.

More pointing!

We made good time across Martcrag Moor toward Langdale Combe and Stake Pass where the Cumbria Way emerges from the Langstrath valley and Borrowdale.

We turned left along it to zigzag down into Mickleden - a stunning U-shaped valley carved by a glacier in the ice age.

Our path now took us back along the valley floor to the ODG - in time for drinks in the lounge.

1st August

Heading up the path to Pike OBlisco. (Mary Randal)As this was our final day, we set off on a shorter route, aiming to be back to the hotel by two.

Slow and steady ascent of Pike OBlisco. (Mary Randal)

We had seen Pike O Blisco from some of the bedrooms and from the front windows of the ODG - and it is our goal today.

The view from the way up Pike O Blisco (Mary Randal)

As we set off there was a Heron fishing in the stream. The path up is well laid so we made good time and got views of Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and beyond as we ate our lunch on the summit.

A break on the way up from Pike OBlisco.

We are back in the ODG for 2pm so that women could catch trains and buses home.

Those of us who are not in a hurry had drinks in the garden and relaxed a little before saying our goodbyes, till next time!

Women's Feedback

"The holiday was very enjoyable and the situation of the hotel so near to the walks was wonderful. The Langdale area is a place I would love to return to. The choice of walks was very good and Marian was fun, supportive and very helpful, liasing regularly to make our stay as comfortable as possible". Carmen

"The holiday was most enjoyable and was perhaps a bit more challenging than I had anticipated, but our guide was very encouraging and with each day our confidence and muscle strength increased!" Jo

"Yes, it was brilliant. We had so many laughs especially in the evenings - no breath to laugh whilst walking - only during the breaks!!! We were well looked after by Marian, who always took the lead where necessary but was happy to walk at the back with the slower walkers when appropriate. She was always encouraging and confident that we would complete each walk. I was in some doubt about doing one of them but I made it!!! Many thanks".

"I did really enjoy the holiday - we even had fairly good weather. Staying at the ODG was nice because we had a good overview of the walks we had done on previous days and what were going to do on the next. Everything was well organised including the instructions we received before arriving. This is my 2nd WW holiday and the second with pole mending, good humoured (even before her first cup of coffee!), rock cracking, fun loving Marian…that says enough doesn't it?! I'll be back!" Brigitte

"I was very pleased with the holiday and it was just as good, if not better, than the one I went on last year. It was an excellent location, very good range of walks, a great guide and a friendly bunch of women. The views were stunning and the walks fairly challenging without being exhausting". Anne

"I enjoyed it, thank you!" "Excellent! Great guide, thoughtful and always in control with the added benefit of geological knowledge, which helped make the walks interesting…I will book again". Veronica
