Grasmere Maps & Compasses 15-19 Sept
with Ellie

15th September

Glenthorne Guest HouseWhat a wonderful group of women this was. We had come from a range of places around the world and the UK, from many walks of life and varied in age from mid seventies to mid twenties.

What was amazing abut us was that we got on like several houses on fire.

In the evening we chatted about our journeys, discussed what we wanted from the holiday and began our look at maps and an orientation to the Lake District. We all agreed that learning more from whatever our individual starting points would make a successful holiday.

16th Sept

September Map Reading group. We started the day looking briefly at different map scales, symbols and grid references.

Everyone was very enthusiastic about working these out.

Walking in Little Langdale.Little Langdale.

Some women admitted to loving maps so much that they read them in bed whilst others had no idea where to start.

Crossing Slaters Bridge.

Our walk took us to Little Langdale where we scrutinised maps and realised just how much information you can collect from one about your route.

Little Langdale Tarn.

We did lots of discussing and digesting of new information. We laughed a lot.

Little Langdale Tarn.

We stopped at a lovely farm for morning coffee, feeling that our legs had walked miles because we had been thinking so much!

Each short section was lead by a pair of women and everyone else checked their maps too.

Walking through Little Langdale.

It's a brave thing to do when you are just starting out with maps.

Skelwith Force.

It was a beautiful short valley walk with a great clear view of the Langdale Pikes. We walked from Skelwith Bridge to Slater Bridge and along to Elterwater.

Some women beetled off to collect vehicles for the return trip so that others could take their time and enjoy the end of the walk at their own pace.

17th Sept

Taking bearings from Loughrigg Terrace. This morning the mysteries of the compass were explained and we practised using them to take bearings to find direction.

We walked along Loughrigg Terrace overlooking Grasmere, stopping to orientate and take bearings.

The benches along Loughrigg Terrace were much appreciated by some, while others sat in the bracken!

Rydal Cave.

We orientated ourselves as far as Rydal Cave - a wonderful quarried cave that shows on the map.

Crossing stepping stones into Rydal Cave.

You can cross stepping stones to get into the cave.

Changing in a survival bag!

One woman unfortunately slipped and got her trousers wet - so we fashioned a survival bag into a changing cubical by tearing open the bottom!

On Loughrigg Fell.

I'm not sure Rydal Caves has seen such hillarity before!

On Silver How.

We then continued up onto Loughrigg Fell from where we could see Lake Windermere & Ambleside, before returning for tea at Glenthorne.

18th Sept

Sitting by the path talking & practicing. This morning we talked about timing and distance and how to use these to help on a walk.

A couple of people decided to stay lower down and practise what we had learnt yesterday.

We had a walk up onto Silver Howe looking at the land features and choosing routes for ourselves.

Grasmere from Silver How.

We were rewarded with a beautiful view from the top, over Grasmere and Rydal water and we could see Glenthorne way down in the valley- small enough to hold in a hand.

Sitting on Silver How.

We practised back bearings which can help you to work out your position, we used road junctions and pubs in the valley.

19th Sept

In Grasmere outside the Gingerbread shop!On our last day we were keen to walk together and share what time we had left.

Some tree hugging on the way to Silver How.

We walked through Grasmere village and around the near side of the lakes to Rydal Hall where we had our last tea shop stop together.

More bearings.

Those who missed Silver Howe had a chance to find out about and practise back bearings - its great when a group says " wow so that's how it works!"

Practising back-bearings.

Tea at Rydal Hall tea room.

From there the group walked along to Ambleside where several people needed to leave so heartfelt goodbyes were said and we returned by bus to Glenthorne.

Women's Feedback

"Loved it! Our group was fascinating. Wonderful strong women each with their unique story and willing to share it, but no-one being too dominating or demanding. For me the new friendships were the biggest bonus - I guess walkers tend to be a cheerful, energetic bunch. The landscape was gorgeous, rain or shine, and being out in this stunning air all day was heaven. Walking through the woods, then a clearing, across a field, down to the footbridge to cross a brook - all this was marvellous. As for the views…I'd never imagined being somewhere so beautiful. Learning to use an OS map with a compass has also been a terrific plus. Ellie is a marvel and was enormously helpful to me. She is a great group leader and teacher and a fun, charismatic person to be with". Ruth

"I have had a wonderful holiday - I have never walked before so found the level a real challenge, but everyone was so nice and they didn't make me feel guilty about slowing them down. The guide was lovely and really knew her stuff and was very patient with us. I will definitely come on another holiday, but probably a gentle one!" Adriana

"I loved the holiday. The mixture of map work and walking was well thought out. I particularly liked the long days out. It was a really good group of women - interesting, supportive and great fun. Ellie was great - good fun, a thoughtful teacher and very approachable. Thank you Ellie, I now feel more able and safer to be let out on the hills by myself" Sue

"I had a wonderful time, the group was a very good mix of levels and I even learnt to read a map and compass! It went above my expectations and the care taken was brilliant. No-one was left out and the explanations were gone over until everyone was happy."

"Fantastic! I learnt a lot about map reading - I'll hopefully be able to remember it all! Walks were at a great pace and at times quite challenging, which is what I needed. The choice of locations were great - lots of breath-taking views…Ellie was a fantastic guide and we all had a lot of fun".

"I loved it! I've been to two previous WW holidays and it continues to be excellent. I find it challenging and relaxing at the same time. The size of the group is just right and the group happened to be so lovely. Ellie is excellent and I have learnt so much about using a map and compass. She was so clear, patient, professional and good humoured. Overall, another excellent WW holiday and I will book again!" Tina

"It was sensational. Ellie is a conscientious, caring and thoughtful woman with a sweet sense of humour".

"The holiday met all expectations as far as learning how to use a map and compass properly. I loved the walks and Ellie was a superb teacher and guide".
