Gentle & Int Malham 13-17 April
with Sue P & Pammy

13th April

High Trenhouse near Malham Tarn. This holiday was the first WW holiday to be based at High Trenhouse Centre near Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire Dales.

High Trenhouse (Marge Buckley)

High Trenhouse (Marge Buckley)

We arrived - by car, or by train with a lift arranged from Skipton or Settle station - and found that High Trenhouse has a delightfully peaceful location on the moors near the tarn.

Sitting around in the lounge.

The centre consists of two beautifully converted old farm buildings set in lovely grounds.

The dining room at High Trenhouse.

We settled in - many of us in ensuite single rooms, then relaxed in the garden or in the lounge-cum-bar to get to know each other.

Sitting in the bar after supper.

Later, we had a delicious meal cooked by the centre staff, then, after a drink in the bar, most women went to bed relatively early, tired from their journeys.

14th April

Just before setting off from High Trenhouse. (Marge Buckley)Today we divided into two walking groups - one gentle, one intermediate.

Group photo of the gentle walk near the tarn.

The Gentle walk with Pammy, headed for Malham Tarn and walked around it.

Malham Tarn

The sunshine was lovely, but it was quite windy so we found shelter when needed behind stone walls.

Enjoying the sunshine out of the wind.

Our path took us through open moorland, woodland and wetlands as we walked around the tarn and back to the centre.

Crossing a bridge on the way around the tarn.

When we returned in the afternoon, some spent time in the sauna and jacuzzi at the centre, while others read in the conservatory, or mooched down into Malham for a cream tea!

Walking along the road towards Malham.Meanwhile, I (Sue P) took the rest of the group on an Intermediate walk to Malham Cove and Goredale Scar.

At the Water Sinks - where the stream disappears.

We walked along the lane from High Trenhouse towards Water Sinks following the stream until it disappeared down a swallow hole.

Heading down into Watlowes Valley.

From there we headed onwards down into the dramatic Watlowes Valley and onto the limestone pavement.

Walking to Janets Foss waterfall.

We strolled across the springy limestone turf to admire Goredale Scar and the beautiful waterfall at Janet's Foss.

We continued through the wild garlic filled woods and into the village of Malham.

Choosing a tea shop in Malham.

After a stop for tea and scones we tackled the journey home.

Walking towards Malham Cove.

We walked up past the spectacular cliffs of Malham Cove, retracing our steps along Watlowes dry valley and then past the old lead-smelting chimney back to welcoming High Trenhouse Centre.

In the late afternoon and evening we enjoyed the comfort of the centre, sharing a drink from the honesty bar, and being treated to another delicious meal.

15th April

Walking over the moors towards Settle.Today, after a good breakfast, Pammy's Gentle walk headed to Settle via Jubilee Cave and Attermire Scar.

Ingleborough in the distance.

It was a fabulous walk through limestone scenery, and gave views over Pen y Gent & Ingleborough!

A break in the shelter of a wall.
Joining a section of single track road.

Taking a break in the shelter of a wall.

There were not as many folk on the trail as there had been around the tarn, and they had time to snooze in the sun on a section of limestone escarpment.

Heading for Settle over a stile.A pause on the way down into Settle.

The day ended with cream teas in Settle and Yorkshire ice cream, and time to wander round the little shops there before their minibus back to High Trenhouse.

The Intermediate group.Meanwhile, the Intermediate group had headed for Fountains Fell.

Setting off up the Penine Way.

On the way to Tennants Farm.

We walked along Pothole Lane to the start of the Pennine Way and then followed it to Tennant Farm where our climb up Fountains Fell began.

Watching the lambs.

We stopped to admire a newborn lamb and then wended our way up the side of the fell, stopping beside a sinkhole for a snack.

Starting up Fountains Fell from Tennants Farm.

We emerged onto the top at the old coalmining chimney and walked across the moor to our lunch stop.

Walking up Fountains Fell.

A patch of snow!

On top of Fountains Fell.

We passed the summit cairn and Fountains Fell Tarn.

On the way to the views of Pen y Ghent.

There were superb views across to Pen y Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside.

Crossing a boggy patch.

View back to Malham Tarn from Fountains Fell.

And then as we started back towards Malham along the ridge, we had a stunning view back to Malham Tarn.

Starting down the grassy descent from Fountains Fell.

Our route back was largely off-path along the grassy ridge of Fountains Fell.

Descending off Fountains Fell.

Descending to the bridle path.

We then descended to the bridle path to walk through grassy pastures listening to the sound of skylarks and curlew singing above us.

Walking back to Malham Tarn.

Arriving back at High Trenhouse.

Time for a cuppa in the garden!

Many women were tired after today's walks and headed to be relatively early after dinner to enjoy their single rooms and read. A small band stayed up longer in the bar chatting, and supporting the local economy!

16th April

Breakfast at High Trenhouse.Today was Easter, and High Trenhouse had prepared a surprise at breakfast - a lovely Easter card to the group, and a bowl of chocolate eggs, and Easter bunnies and chicks to share around. A nice touch!

Easter bunny, eggs, & cards.

Headed for the smelting chimney.

Today Pammy took the Gentle walk across the moorland towards the old smelting chimney.

Wonderful open moorland.

Walking across the moors.

It was windy and cold, but there were occasional walls to shelter behind during a break.

Crossing a stile.Looking at the map during a break.

They then returned to Malham Tarn and walked around the far side of the tarn back to High Trenhouse.

Enjoying the sun on the way home.

Despite the cold wind, we were able to find a good sunbathing spot on the way home - which women duely indulged in!

A pause with views towards Settle.Today the Intermediate walk was a longer version of the Day 2 gentle walk towards Settle.

Setting off across the moors to Settle.

In a sink hole on the moors.

We took a route over Langcliffe Moor with views of Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough in the distance.

A break in amongst the rocks on the way to Jubilee Cave.

At Jubilee Cave we turned south stopping to peer into Victoria Cave.

Intrepid Intermediate group!

Attermire Scar.

This region is full of caves, sink holes, and cliffs - the fascinating results of limestone erosion - and they make for some very scenic walking.....

Walking back past Attermire Scar.

Rather than head down into Settle, we now continued past Attermire Scar as the path turned uphill towards the Grizedale tops.

Walking back to High Trenhouse.

Turning northwest along the bridleway to Gorbeck we then walked northeast back along the first bit of the morning's path to complete the circle.

Sunbathing during a break.

Like on the gentle walk, there was an inclination to enjoy the sun despite the cold wind.

The sunny courtyard at High Trenhouse proved popular on our return.

17th April

Pammy and some of the gentle walkers setting off for Malham.Today was our last day. We had another generous breakfast at High Trenhouse, then the Gentle walk set out towards Malham Cove, Goredale, and Janet's Foss.

Walking down towards Malham.

Reaching the limestone pavement overlooking Malham.

The limestone pavement was fascinating - full of glints and grikes - and we walked across it to the view down towards Malham.

Looking back at the scar above Malham Cove.

The limestone scenery from above Malham Cove was very striking.

They walked to admire the cliffs at Gordale Scar, then enjoyed a lovely view of the waterfall at Janet's Fosse.

Plenty of water in the falls at Janets Fosse.

There was plenty of water in the falls.

Walking to Malham Village.

From here they walked into Malham village via the river to explore the village a little.

On Malham bridge.

It was a lovely last day out in sunshine that ended with a pint!

Enjoying a pint outside the pub in Malham.

Their minibus picked them up from Malham for the lift back up the hill to High Trenhouse - in time for packed lunches in the garden, then journeys home.

Walking along the boardwalk to Malham Tarn.Meanwhile, on the Intermediate walk we had followed the boardwalk trail around Malham Tarn National Nature Reserve.

Watching through binoculars from the hide.

We spent some quiet moments looking out over the tarn from the bird hide, watching coots and grebes.

Settle Station on the way home (Marge Buckley)

Though cold and windy at times, we'd had some lovely dry weather over this holiday, and High Trenhouse had proved to be a very popular venue. We'll be back!

Women's Feedback & more photos

Above Malham Cove."I enjoyed the holiday a great deal. The accommodation was wonderful and exceeded expectations. Sue as a leader was excellent, she was supportive and encouraging at all times".

"Excellent walks, the guides changed walks to meet our needs and the accommodation was excellent also. Pammy's projector slide show on the last night was a great way to end".

"We were very well looked after by both guides and they catered for different abilities with a good choice of walks". Fiona

On the way to Fountains Fell (Marge Buckley)"The holiday was wonderful, great walks with an excellent guide. I particularly liked the fact that everything was 'laid back', no pressure to walk faster or set off too early etc. i.e. enjoyment was emphasised! Guides were flexible and listened to preferences about what we wanted to do. The walks were comfortable for most people and everyone could go at their own pace".

"Brilliant walks, excellent guide, good food, comfortable rooms, good company and very relaxing".

"From the moment of arrival, we were made to feel welcome by the guides and High Trenhouse staff. The accommodation was excellent, lovely rooms, delicious food and very hospitable staff. The walks were very good and well planned and led. The guides were most caring and ensured that we were all walking at a level that suited us. Overall the holiday was brilliant, a lovely bunch of women, fabulous scenery, comfortable accommodation and fantastic guides…thank you!" Katy

"I've had a great time. The holiday exceeded my expectations and I've not laughed so much for years. I will be telling all my friends about WW!" Beryl

View on the way back from Attermire Scar."Another fabulous holiday! I felt really cared for and looked after, but also had the freedom to make my own choices. Being ill on a walk, Sue arranged for a taxi to take me back - no fuss but just the right thing. Much hilarity and serious discussion as usual; that really good feel-good factor of being together with other women trying new things and being in the fresh air". Helen

"Excellent holiday in every respect; leaders were brilliant, walks were perfect and accommodation unbeatable - please use this venue again!"

"Was just the relaxing weekend I was after, I have done intermediate standard before but just wanted a bit of walking and chance to relax to and I got that".

"The holiday was excellent, better than anticipated. Never been on a WW holiday or a walking holiday before - wonderful accommodation, food and very enjoyable company".

Sue Penn. (Marge Buckley)

"I am writing to let you know how much I enjoyed my Easter weekend at Malham. The accommodation was superb and both the walking leaders were excellent. A special mention though to Sue P. who was my leader on the Intermediate group. She was encouraging, considerate and tailored the walks to suit the individual and group's needs. I am now full of enthusiasm". Elizabeth

"This was my first holiday with WW and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The walks were perfect and left me feeling I had achieved something. The group got on really well and we had a lot of fun. I will definitely be booking another holiday with WW and hope the next holiday will be as good as this one".

"I had been worried I was too unfit but was surprised that there was no pressure to walk faster than was comfortable and we had lots of sun-bathing stops! The accommodation was luxurious and food was fab!"
