------ ---Intermediate Borrowdale

Intermediate Borrowdale 31 Mar-3 Apr
with Yvonne

1st April

On the way to Rossthwaite. This 3-day weekend break based at Glaramara in Borrowdale was dominated by weather - and lots of it!

Today, for our first walking day, sunny spells and heavy showers had been forecast. However, the rain didn't actually start until after we'd finished our walk.

Looking back towards Seatoller.

Careful route planning was need by Yvonne to avoid flooded paths (heavy rain in the previous days meant there was a lot of water lying in the fields and Derwentwater was bigger than usual...)

Lambs in the red/orange jackets.

We took the top path through the woods above the Glaramara with the first green growth of spring just beginning to show and the sound on woodpeckers at work.

Starting up over Puddingstone Bank.

We walked down through Rosthwaite village and admiring the new lambs with their orange jackets on.

Looking back to Borrowdale from the bridle path.

Then it was up over Puddingstone Bank to Watendlath for our first lunch or tea in the National Trust cafe.

After walking down beside Watendlath Beck we took the path to the Lodore Falls - which were impressive with so much water in the beck.

Flooded Derwent Water.

Walking to Grange.

At Grange we had a second lunch (and more tea for some) then we walked back via the riverside path to Glaramara - seeing a pair of goosanders on the way.

That evening after dinner we were invited to join in the Bolton CHA rambling group's country dancing - however, most of us were comfortably ensconced in the bar by that point...

2nd April

Group photo outside Glaramara.A deep low-pressure system sitting over northern England meant some wild cold front weather.

Stockley Bridge.

We walked down the valley to Seathwaite, truly the place with the highest recorded rainfall in England, and took a break at Stockley Bridge.

Crossing the bridge over Taylor Gill.

Both waterfalls en route were spectacular.

Scafell behind.

We splashed our way up to Styhead and huddled behind the rescue point for lunch.

Lunch at the rescue point.

There were streams pouring down off Scafell Pike, which aren't there normally.

Great weather for ducks!

After a quick detour to look down into Wasdale, we turned back to return to the warm and dry of the centre.

Looking down on the Taylor Gill/Stockley Beck junction.

There was time to wander down to Rosthwaite for afternoon tea at the Royal Oak and/or a pint at the Scafell Hotel.

Then we had a quiet dinner - with Glaramara to ourselves!

3rd April

Finer weather - Borrowdale and Castle Crag from the Allerdale Ramble.Today we walked up behind the centre onto the High Spy / Maiden Moor Ridge for some fab views.

Starting up beside Tongue Gill.

The weather was sunny but cold - our best day so far.

Walking up beside Tongue Gill.

The steep climb up through the old quarry workings kept us warm.

On the top of High Spy.

The strong wind on top meant we didn't linger, though we did have time to savour the sight of all the big Lake District fells, some, like Helvellyn, with a sprinkling of new snow on top.

Then it was back to the old quarries, nicknamed Mordor, for a comfortable lunch in the sun.

A 2.30pm return allowed us time for catching trains, heading off down the motorway, or lingering over coffee before saying finally saying our goodbyes.

Women's Feedback

"Wonderful. Better than my expectations. I'll be back. I was anxious about my fitness and Yvonne was helpful and very responsive to the varied needs of the group and I really enjoyed the holiday, many thanks".

"Memorable and for all the right reasons!"

"I loved it. It was my first and I'd like to go on another one day. Yvonne was excellent, with helpful advice and she really knew the area. The accommodation was great with fab food, warm open fires and friendly staff".

"It was great. Yvonne was a really good guide, Borrowdale is a excellent location and the variety of walks were good".

"I enjoyed everything about the holiday. My initial impression was that the bedroom was a bit small, but it was comfortable, warm and had a good view. The food at the centre was very good and fresh and the staff were helpful and friendly. The intermediate walking was good despite a lot of rain on one of them. Yvonne was a good guide making thoughtful decisions and taking into account the whole group. The ladies were all good fun to be with and made the walking interesting and easier in that we encouraged each other. I wouldn't mind giving high Intermediate a try next time!" Diana

"Another great holiday at Glaramara (my third in a row!). The weather was not quite as good as last year, which was exceptional, but the walks were ably adapted by Yvonne to suit the conditions and the needs of the group. She is a star!" Alison

"Enjoyed it, accommodation was good and Yvonne was excellent". Helen

"A lovely break with good walks and a great group of women (pity about the weather but it didn't dampen the spirits!). The holiday was so easy to arrange and was well organised with no fuss or hassle. I will definitely come on another WW holiday and will eagerly await each new brochure, many thanks".
