------ ---Gentle Peak District

16-20 August - Gentle Peak District
with Jo

16th August

The day on which we got to know each other.

We met up in the lounge at Losehill Hall as women arrived through the afternoon. After supper we talked about the holiday and then most women had an early night after some quite long journeys from as far away as Devon, Pembrokeshire and Northern Ireland.

17th August

Setting off from Losehill Hall. The day on which we became accomplished at stile climbing and Articulate!

We put on our waterproofs prepared for the wet weather forecast and set off in a shower.

Stile climbing!

We were soon tackling the first of many stiles as we walked along the Hope Valley.

The sun came out in time for elevenses on a well-placed log before we went through the meadows to Brough Mill.

There were more capers and leg stretches over stiles and bridges before we reached Hope in bright sunshine for our first tea shop experience.

After supper we played a noisy game of Articulate followed by a perplexing game of Scissors.

18th August

Setting off towards Cave Dale. The day on which Joy became expert at holding gates and Dorothy lost her sole.

We set off in the dry though the village and up the narrow lane (photo 896 ) which leads to the spectacular limestone gorge of Cave Dale.

We descended to the old road for our lunch when the rain set in.

Joy became an expert in gate holding!

Slipping and sliding down the track greasy with the rain we came to the Treak Cliff Caverns where Joy held the gate open in her expert way and we stopped for a welcome cup of tea in the dry.

We went back to Castleton, some women stopping off for a trip down Speedwell Cavern.

As we entered the village, the sole of Dorothy's boot fell off so she and Jo went off to an outdoor shop for a new pair of boots!

Dinner at Losehill Hall.

Back at Losehill Hall, good use was made of the Drying Room! Supper was good and hearty with another splendid display of puddings on the sweet trolley.

Some women went out to enjoy the local entertainment at the pub in Castleton while the rest sat and chatted in the lounge.

19th August

Sunshine and showers forecast. The day on which we walked the Pennine Way (well, part of)

Sunshine and showers were forecast yet again and it was another day for putting on and taking of our waterproofs.

Mam Tor.

We walked up Hollowford Road and then up the old coffin track to Hollins Cross.

On the way to Hollins Cross.

Another stile.

Walking to Hollins Cross.

We took our time up the steep bits and got to the top just as it started to rain heavily.

Descending to Barber Booth.

The Vale of Edale with views across to the Kinder Plateau opened up before us as we descended to Barber Booth.

We joined the Pennine Way at Upper Booth and had views back to the other side of the valley and Mam Tor.

Moorland Centre.

Some women went inside for a welcome drink before visiting the new Moorland Centre - a modern building of brilliant design with a water cascade on a glass roof and another green roof planted with alpines.

We caught the local bus back to Castleton and enjoyed the scenic drive back over Mam Nick.

20th August

Final photo in the sun!The day on which the sun shone!

Several women had to leave for their long journeys home so we posed for final photos in the bright sunshine.

A small group then set off for a relaxed walk through the meadows to Townhead Bridge.

Women's Feedback

"The holiday was lovely and very well organised. The walks in Derbyshire were fantastic with very scenic views".

"This was a really good holiday in a beautiful area. Everything was very well organised. I think it exceeded my expectations in terms of accommodation, food and walks".

"I enjoyed it more than I possibly could have hoped. It was my first holiday with WalkingWomen and I was a bit nervous… Jo was superb".

"I enjoyed it immensely. I was a bit nervous about it before I arrived but all the women were lovely and Jo is a wonderful leader. I was also unsure if I would be able to cope with the distances but Jo was very reassuring and let us have plenty of rest stops! It exceeded my expectations. I now have more confidence in my walking abilities".

"Great stuff! Everything I'd hoped and more - really good group of women - lots of fun, laughs and great pride at seeing where we'd been each day!"

"Had a lovely break, stressfree. Good company - met an interesting group of women from a variety of backgrounds. The facilities are very good at Losehill Hall. A lovely situation - very restful break".

"Up to usual friendly high standards. Lived up to expectations re accommodation, guide, variety of walks etc. Minor problems dealt with immediately and efficiently. Thoroughly enjoyable".

"Jo was an excellent guide. She was thoughtful and helpful. She really worked out what we could manage as a group and made sure that we were challenged but comfortable with what we did".

"I really loved it! It was so well organised and everyone was so helpful and friendly. My first one and I will definitely be on another - one of many more I hope! The holiday exceeded my expectations and I had high expectations to begin with!"

"As a novice walker and unfit, this holiday exceeded all my expectations. The size of the group was big enough to meet fantastic women, but small enough so 'cliques' did not develop. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I have seen, and walked on, a part of my own country I did not know existed apart from a name on a map. As an introduction to walking it was a fantastic time… I hope I will be able to pass on my enjoyment of the holiday and your company to my friends".
