The sun was shining and we set off through the village, across the fields up onto the ridge where we got a great view of the village, the sea and the areas we would be walking over the weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() We even managed to see Poole Harbour and the Needles on the Isle of Wight, and turning inland we could see far over the countryside. ![]() The wildflowers were lovely and we spotted knapweed, scabius, eyebright, stitchwort, scarlet pimpernels, thistles and columbine among others. ![]() ![]() ![]() We walked back via the church to look at a good exhibition about the history of the area and the village's modern day projects. ![]() After a cup of tea at the beach café 3 of the group took a boat ride out of the Cove and round to look at Durdle Door from the sea - they loved it! ![]() Back at the Hotel we met up with the rest of the group, some of whom had had long and tiring journeys. ![]() We chatted over drinks in the evening sun in the garden before supper. After dinner we walked up to Stair Hole to stretch our legs before bed. |

We packed out picnic lunches before setting off out of the village to the coastal path. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was a glorious day and we had plenty of stops to enjoy the fantastic views along the coast to Weymouth Harbour and Portland Bill. ![]() The dogs enjoyed cooling off in the cattle troughs. ![]() We stopped at St Catherine's Church for a break and a few moments contemplation. It is a very special spot with wonderful views over the sea. ![]() Having rested we set off for White Nothe along the coastal path. ![]() We chose a quiet spot on the cliffs for lunch with good views to the east and west. ![]() ![]() ![]() We were amazed to be joined by a group of young men (outdoor lads.com) who were also walking the area which caused much hilarity and even produced a party invitation to their campsite that evening! ![]() Our path then took us back along the coast past a herd of rather large cattle who initially blocked our path and then followed us round Scratchy Bottom. ![]() ![]() ![]() We finally reached the point above the sea and headed down to Durdle Door. ![]() Everyone managed the steep descent well, even the dogs and we all took a few minutes rest at the bottom. ![]() ![]() ![]() On reaching the Door some headed straight on, some stopped for photos, and some headed for the ice cream van. ![]() The coastguard and helicopter were out to rescue someone who had been 'tombstoning' on Durdle Door. ![]() ![]() Our final path took us up from the Door and over the hill back to Lulworth. ![]() We were very hot, dusty and tired but I think everyone felt a sense of achievement. ![]() ![]() The pool was very welcome for some whilst the shady terrace and a cold beer was reward for others. ![]() Having rested and bathed we met for drinks and a look at the WW brochure before dinner and a quick walk to the Cove. ![]() It was National Moth Night and a group had set up near the Hotel to attract, monitor and record moths with a bright light and a white sheet. We spent some time watching their activities before heading in to bed. |

![]() We walked up to the trig point towards Arish Mel and had a break overlooking the tank training grounds. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We then set off to Mupes Bay and deciding not to stop in the Bay we headed on to the Fossil Forest. ![]() The sun came out and some of the group decided to descend down the steps to the Forest to get a closer look at the fossilised remains of the trees. ![]() The area dates back 135 million years and is a popular place for geographers and geologists. ![]() Along the coastal path we also spotted a variety of beautiful butterflies including the rare Lulworth Skipper. ![]() We walked back to the end of Lulworth Cove and descended onto the beach for lunch and a rest. ![]() It was a lovely afternoon and we enjoyed paddling, watching the boats and canoes come and go. Back at the Hotel we said our farewells and all started our journeys home. Thanks especially to Anna for her knowledge of wildflowers and butterflies, to Enid for her inspirational energy and to everyone for their good humour and company. |
Women's Feedback
"This was my sister's and mine first WalkingWomen's trip and we enjoyed it very much. The walks were just right, taking in the lovely area of Lulworth and not too taxing. I would recommend this holiday to my friends".
"This was my first time with WalkingWomen. I did not know what to expect but can honestly say I have just spent a wonderful weekend in very pleasant company, with wonderful scenery and walks. Barbara, our guide, was helpful and approachable and made the weekend a great one to remember. I shall definitely book again".
"I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend in Dorset. I was delighted by the birds, flowers, butterflies and moths in this beautiful area - to the amusement and interest of the others. So glad I took my binoculars and nature guide-book, appreciated by the group too!" Anna
"My first WalkingWomen holiday! Hugely enjoyable - was concerned I wouldn't cope not having done any really long walks for over a year but it was fine. Brilliantly led, lots of breaks, and clever detours to avoid too many steep bits. Lulworth exceeded my expectations as a destination and the accommodation was fab!! Will come again!" Janette
