Pembroke CP - Dale to St Davids - 4-9 Aug
with Marian

4th August

Dale Fort.Arrival at Dale Fort Field Centre

This holiday started from Dale, and we would walk to St Davids.

Dale Fort Field Centre is on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path just beyond Dale village - a stunning location.

The last few Women arrived early in the evening, which was pleasant and sunny. After dinner we chatted in the bar, which is cosy and friendly.

5th August

Dale Fort to Marloes

Views from the coast path.It was a fine day as we set off along the coast to Marloes Sands.

Cows at a stream crossing.

We had stunning sea and cliff views as we rounded promontaries and dipped down to cross streams at little coves.

A rest during a break.

There were some beautiful horses on the path, and glorious fields of wheat.

Stunning sea cliffs.

Beautiful horses.

Wonderful horses.

Women on the beach.

Another cove.

Fields of wheat.

Some women had had enough when we reached a point where one could short cut across a headland to Marloes Sands YH.

Fishing boat unloads at Marloes.

Others of us wanted to walk further, and after a brew we retraced our steps to complete the coast path walk around the headland.

Marloes Sands hostel.

Marloes Sands YH, right near Marloes beach, is a self-catering hostel.

Tiger moth in the bathroom.

Our three course evening meal was quickly prepared with help from lots of competent women, so many thanks to you all your help. (Next year we will have 2 nights at Dale Fort instead).

Later, I found a beautiful tiger moth sleeping in the bathroom.

6th August

Marloes Sands to Broad Haven

View of ships off the coast. We set off in good spirits continuing along the coast path to Broad Haven.

Lovely flowers.

stacks and cliffs...

At St Brides we stopped for lunch and found some fantastic Celtic crosses by the church.

I photographed these with a view of St Brides Castle behind them.

Coast line from the woods.

The last part of the path into Broadhaven faces NE rather than west, and in this sheltered spot there is woodland, a fantastic contrast to the open coastlands beforehand.

Looking back along the coast.

On reaching Little Haven we stopped in a pub flying the Welsh flag, and had a hot drink.

Reaching Broad Haven.

There were scones and jam available to any who wanted to indulge!

7th August

Broad Haven to Solva (which we did in the other direction)

Setting fof for Solva.Due to problematic bus times, we did the next leg in reverse - from Solva back to Broad Haven.

It was another sunny day today as we set off - after a taxi minibus lift to Solva.

A break on the coast path.

We stopped for breaks when we needed, and had a fabulous day.

A group photo on the bridge.

Beautiful coves along the way.

At Newgale we stopped off at a great café called 'The Sands' for a brew.

Walking to Nolton Haven.

Stunning views along the coast.

Wheat fields ready for harvesting.Heather in bloom.

Jelly fish.

And walked along the 2km beach, which is the longest beach in Pembrokeshire.

Looking back along the coast.

At Nolton Haven we drop in on a photographer running an exhibition of his work, which is excellent.

Looking forward along the coast.

Nolton Haven.Rescued animals.

A few Km later at Druidstone Haven we found some rescued animals by a smallholding, belonging to Jim the Ghost.

Broad Haven.

We also saw an amazing ecohouse built into the hillside.

We all got back to Broadhaven in time to shower and change before dinner.

Watching the sun go down from Broad Haven.

Stunning sunset.

We spent the evening after dinner down on the beach watching the sun go down, and then visited the pub.

8th August

Solva. We were dropped at Solva by the taxi minibus to finish our walk to St Davids.

This beautiful harbour is a glacial melt water channel carved out of the landscape when the ice sheet covering Wales melted.

Heading out along the coast.

Mares and foals beside the path.

One km into the coast path there was a field full of mares with foals.

One of the foals.

A whole herd, they were gorgeous, and the mares gallopped up and down showing off their prowess.

Group photo on the cliffs.

Walking along the coast.

Sea as still as a pond.

At Nons Chapel. An old gravestone at St Nons.

We had lunch at St Non's chapel (Immaculate mother of St David patron St of Wales).

This prompted interesting conversation on Immaculate Conception and other matters.

Some of the group chose to shorten today's walking by going into St David's from here to visit the sights of Britain's smallest City.

The rest of us continued round the rugged coastline, past the sandy bay of Porthclais where we found toilets and a tiny café with Mocha coffee and hot chocolate.

Walking around the headland towards Whitesands Bay.

A while later, rested and watered we continue ever onward to St Justinian's, from where, those who wish, can catch the boat to Ramsey Island tomorrow morning.

Kids on the beach.Whitesands Bay.

At Whitesands bay we are nearly there just a km or so to go and so we stop again for coffee and ice cream, some go for paddle.

St Davids Hostel.

We took the shorter way to the hostel, staying off the road.

Tea in the garden.

St Davids youth hostel.

The kitchen door warns of Badgers that may break in at night and eat all your food so we bolt the door.

9th August

Solva to St Davids

Highland cattle.

Some women wanted to do the boat trip to Ramsay Island (photos to follow?? please!) They had arranged a taxi the night before so that they didn't have to walk there.

Shire horses.

Some women choose to stay at the YH to sit in the sun and read whilst the rest of us walked into St David's to go sightseeing and shopping.

Ruins at St Davids Cathedral.

After taking lots of photos in St Davids beautiful Cathedral, we all met up back at the hostel in time for our return taxi ride back to cars left at Dale Fort Field centre, or Haverfordwest train station.

Women's Feedback

"Having just returned from my first holiday with Walking Women I would like you to pass on a big thank you to Marian. She is an excellent guide and her organisation and encouragement made the holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed the coastal route and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of accommodation, although some was more enjoyable than others. I would certainly like to use Walking Women again". Allison

"It was great. The walks were stunning, Marian was a brilliant guide, the accommodation was interesting; even the weather was kind. Not only that, we were lucky enough to walk with the best undiscovered 'stand up' comic in Britain - so there was a lot of laughter". Maggie

"Fantastic break with a wonderful group of women. Beautiful scenery - loads of laughter - good foof - walks stretching but not too hard. I feel really healthy now I'm home and intend to keep up the walking".

"Great views. Wonderful women. Long walks and sore toes. Expectations exceeded!".

"An enjoyable pace - breath taking scenery. Well catered for. Good choice of walks. An excellent guide".
