------ ---Gentle Silverdale

Gentle Silverdale 2-5 August
with Sarah R

2nd August

Very nice B&B cat! This holiday had been moved from Arnside to Silverdale some time previously due to problems at the original accommodation.

Bedroom at Spring Bank House.

We were staying in two nearby accommodations - the comfortable and friendly Spring Bank Guest House and the equally accommodating Silverdale Hotel.

The hotel conservatory and garden.

Most of us met up in the sunny conservatory of the hotel, before strolling down to the shore to appreciate the views over Morecambe Bay.

Returning to the pub for dinner we relaxed and got to know each other.

3rd August

About to set off walking.Friday was sunny and clear so we took the gentle climb up through Eaves Wood Nature Reserve to the Queen Victoria memorial which is shaped like a white pepper pot.

Walking to the Victoria memorial.

A snack spot on limestone pavement by the Victoria Memorial.

Stopping for a snack break on the limestone craggy top we enjoyed the views from the edge over the bay and Silverdale.

Reaching the Pepper Pot.

Walking down through the woods.

Walking down through the woods.

After meandering down through the wood exploring the pathways studying the beautiful trees we visited the Tea room at the nearby Waterslack garden centre.

Tea room near Waterslack.

Resisting the tempting cakes we sat beneath the pretty boat shaped arbours, trying to decide whether it was going to rain on us or not.

Fortunately it didn't and we headed off towards Haweswater Moss nature Reserve to have lunch overlooking the lake.

Unfortunately sitting down near an ants nest meant an unfortunate nip for one of the group, but the picnic was still appreciated.

The boardwalk in the Nature Reserve.

After lunch we strolled though the Nature Reserve investigating the boardwalk along the lake, but failing to spot further wildlife.

Our route took us back along the quiet lanes and through the fields into Silverdale.

Dinner at a pub in Yealand Conyers.

Some of the group then went to explore the nearby Wolf House art gallery, which had lots to tempt us in both the shop and tea rooms.

In the evening we made an expedition to nearby Yealand Conyers for a super meal in the pub.

4th August

Waterproofs were soon going on! Saturday's weather took a turn for the worst and full waterproofs were soon necessary.

Waterproofs going on!

Walking to Arnside Knott.

Steamy going up to Arnside Knott.

The climb up to Arnside Knott proved somewhat steamy, and clothes were shed again.

Looking over trees and sands to Grange.

Looking North we looked over towards Grange over Sands a very genteel Edwardian resort.

Highland cattle on the way to Arnside.

But we headed down the hill side towards another picturesque resort at Arnside, passing down the hillside we avoided the field of highland cows, who looked very cuddly despite the horns.

On the way to Arnside.

The outskirts of Arnside has many very stylish houses and apartments, which we studied and were amazed when we got into Arnside and looked in the estate agents by the prices for these smart addresses.

On the front in Arnside.

At Arnside we took a break for lunch and to explore the shops before taking the coastal route back towards Silverdale.

A break on the way back to Silverdale.

The tide was in, so we missed the opportunity to walk along the beach.

In the woods above the sea.

So we took the route through the pretty woods instead and then along the rocky cliff path back to dry off and have baths.

Dinner.

At dinner we shared our experiences with one of the group who had taken the day off to avoid the rain.

She gone instead to nearby Carnforth where she had visited the museum at the railway station where the film Brief Encounter was set.

5th August

Breakfast at the guest house.Sunday our last day was boiling hot a complete contrast to the previous day.

A warm sunny day!

Walking in Leighton Moss.

Taking our cars to the Leighton Moss Bird reserve we walked across the causeway and along the side of the mossland near to Leighton Hall.

Walking to Cringlebarrow woods.

We then climbed up through the welcome shade of Cringlebarrow Woods.

A break in the fields.

After a steep scramble down back to Leighton Hall some of us stopped off at the public hide at the Nature reserve, then back to the tea rooms for a final cup of tea before saying our farewells.

Women's Feedback

"Despite showers it was a wonderful break in superb surroundings with a very friendly group of ladies. Problems? Only having to return to London from this glorious part of the country! Madeline's enthusiasm for her subject made the holiday a delight".

"The accommodation was excellent, beautiful room, best breakfast I have ever had at a B&B. Silverdale is a beautiful area and the walks were interesting, especially with Madeline's knowledge of natural history. Silverdale is well suited to those who have little walking experience. You can see a lot - beautiful coastal views without much 'uphill' walking".

"My first ever walking holiday, very apprehensive whether I could cope but found it fine! Very well looked after, walks geared to ability. Very interesting plus plenty of stops. Made everyone feel they had done well". Pat

"Certainly an excellent way to spend a short break - good company, lovely scenery, good walks despite some adverse weather conditions…What more could one ask for!". Deborah

"Great holiday, excellent guide and walking companions. Hoping for some lasting friendships as a result". Jenny
