------ ---Gentle Peak District

Gentle Peak District 17-21 Feb
with Heidi

17th Feb

Losehill Hall (Margaret Hockney)This holiday was based at Losehill Hall in Derbyshire, near Castleton.

Snowdrops. (Margaret Hockney)

We were blessed with wonderfully still rain free mild days with signs of spring everywhere even this far north!

Everybody arrived fine on the Saturday afternoon - including Ruby the hearing dog. We had a peaceful first evening settling in and enjoying the facilities at Losehill Hall.

18th Feb

Setting off from Losehill Hall day 1.On Sunday we walked along the valley from Castleton to Brough.

Walking to Hope.

This is the walk of many stiles and glorious mud but we soon got used to it and the views of Losehill and Mam Tor were wonderful.

A pause for photos.Ruth the hearing dog.

Changing skies (Margaret Hockney)

We stopped occasionally to watch the Paragliders flying in the updrafts of Mam Tor.

Short break (Margaret Hockney)

We had lunch in the shelter of the railway station, and walked to Hope for a quick shopping stop.

Mud on the way back!

Then it was back to the fire, warm rooms, and one of many delicious dinners at Losehill Hall.

In the evening some of us played the first of many games of Snatch, a word based game that Liz and Margaret played with great skill. The rest of us barely managed to keep up but enjoyed it none-the-less!

Relaxing back at Losehill Hall. (Merice Marshall)

Fortunately we played in teams with one of the 'experts' in each team!

19th Feb

On the way home.Monday stayed mild still, and we waked from Losehill towards Hope and then up to Hope Cross.

From here, we followed the Roman road back to Hope where we all stopped for tea.

And great views along the way.

Heading back to Losehill Hall.

Headed for Hope Cross.

Some women went back on the bus from Hope, while the rest of us walked back to Losehill.

20th Feb

Starting along the Pennine Way.On Tuesday the minibus drove us to Edale. On the way we rescued 2 stray dogs that were wandering on the road.

Watching the sheep.

From Edale Station we walked along the Pennine Way gently to Upper Booth and Barber Booth, then took the path up over Hollins Cross and so back to Castleton.

On the way to Upper Booth.

We all stopped in a tea shop and some enjoyed wonderful homemade scones, clotted cream and blackcurrant jam!

21st Feb

Final day.The final day was quite windy and threatened with rain but held off until we got back.

Many people had to go early so we said our goodbyes first and the 4 of us walking set off around the head of the Castleton valley.

On the old Mam Tor road.

We were intrigued by the old Mam Tor road which had was closed after a landslide over 30 years ago.

View of the old Mam Tor road.

We came down into Castleton via Cavedale, walking down beneath spectacular Peveril Castle. A great way to end our last walk!

Women's Feedback

"I enjoyed the good company of my fellow holiday makers/walkers. Meals and food were superb as was the choice for packed lunch, with great service".

"This was my second holiday with WW and I enjoyed it, as I had the first. The group, a good number, 10 in all, mixed well, were good company and varied in age which gave a nice balance. All three walks were excellent. We were fortunate with the weather; obligingly it only rained at night! That said, we did have a fair bit of mud, but the outside tap and brush at Losehill was appreciated by all!"

"A very enjoyable holiday. Good company, good food and even good weather. Heidi kept us well informed, walks were great and she was caring and helpful".

"We had a very nice 4 days, the group bonded well. Heidi was a pleasure to be with and an excellent guide. I felt very comfortable and confident in her instructions".

"Holiday was relaxing, rewarding and very enjoyable".

"Excellent. The 5th WW holiday I've done, best so far. Great group of people - easygoing and friendly. Heidi was great, taking a steady pace and mindful of the whole group".

"It was great. Very relaxing but also invigorating. Good company, excellent food, professional guide and professional outfit!"

"Enjoyed holiday thoroughly. I needed a break away in the countryside and the WW holiday was prefect for my needs. Therapeutic walks in beautiful surroundings, good food and comfortable accommodation. No problems at all. Many thanks to Heidi, she was great".
