with Barbara

'Dales & Dance Workshops'

29th July

The lovely village of Hartington.Seven of us gathered at Hartington Hall Youth Hostel for our walk on Friday afternoon.

Gathering for the Friday afternoon walk.

We walked down through the village and out along the path towards Pilsbury.

The pond in the village.

This walk gave us a good, gentle start to the weekend so we could stretch our legs after some fairly long journeys.

Village gardens full of flowers.Hartington village.

The sun was shining and the gardens and flowers in the hedgerows looked beautiful.

Stunning flowers.

A few spots of rain did not dampen our spirits. The path took us along the side of the river with good views along the valley .

After crossing the river we climbed onto the ridge on the other side of the valley and walked back towards Hartington.

Climbing up onto the ridge.

We stopped in the village for tea and scones before heading up to the Hostel to meet the rest of our group.

Sweet calf.

We had drinks and supper at the Hostel - a bit chaotic as it was a busy evening but it gave us a chance to get to know one another.

After supper some of us walked down to the pub whilst others headed for an early night.

30th July

About to set off from Hartington Hall. After breakfast on Saturday we gathered for our walk in more sunshine.

Path out of the village.

Our path took us out of the village across the fields and down to the river at Beresford Dale.

Rock Spire.

We crossed the bridge by Pike Pool, so called after the spire of rock in the river and then headed uphill towards Alstonefield.

Stops on the way to Alstonefield.

It was a lovely morning and we had plenty of stops to enjoy the views, rest and chat.

Walking to Wolfscote Dale.

Feeling refreshed we walked out of the village towards Wolfscote Dale along lovely old tracks enclosed by stone walls.

Hartington Hall.

Hartington Hall must be one of the most comfortable, elegant and welcoming hostels.

Going out for tea and cake.

8 of us headed down to the village for tea, cakes and ice cream whilst the others rested and read at the Hostel.

Sitting room.

We then met for drinks and dinner following which we were delighted when Joanne agreed to run a jazz dance workshop!

We cleared a space in the, by now empty, restaurant, persuaded the chef to put on a suitable CD and away we went - it was great fun - chaos but fun (as promised no photos!).

Well done everyone for joining the workshop. Some of us then retired to bed whilst others played Scrabble before the evening ended.

31st July

Leaving Hartington Hall. After breakfast on Sunday and having said goodbye to Katie and Joanne we headed towards the Tissington Trail across fields and along the lanes.

Taking the Tissington Trail.

Another lovely morning with blue sky and a breeze - perfect walking weather.

After a quick cup of tea and cold drinks we parted for our journey's home.

A happy weekend with lots of laughter!

Women's Feedback

"We all had a lovely time and it exceeded my expectations. 12 is a very good number and we all got on really well and had a fun time. The walks were excellent, neither too easy or too difficult and the group mixed well and had plenty to talk about! I went with a friend but equally would have felt quite able to go on my own as it was very easy to get to know the others. Thoroughly enjoyable and I will come again". Rowena

"The holiday was very enjoyable. The walks were a good length and the grading of the walk was as I had envisaged. It was good to walk in the company of other women and I felt that the numbers of walker in the group were just right. Evenings were relaxed, allowing each person to socialise or do their own thing. There was a good atmosphere throughout the weekend".

"The holiday was very enjoyable. It was my first experience of WalkingWomen and being a social walker, I chose the intermediate level. The full day walk was excellent - long enough but with lots of breaks and a pun on route so we didn't have to find bushes! Barbara was an excellent leader - interested in everyone and seemed to enjoy being with us in the evening. I will certainly be joining WalkingWomen again".

"Very enjoyable w/e. Youth hostel was far better than I was expecting. Food was good, room clean etc. Our guide Barbara was an absolute gem. She really brought the group together and made the whole weekend fun and relaxing. I felt very well looked after - she is very much a people's person"

"I had a wonderful weekend in excellent company. The walks were stunning and we had glorious sunshine to make them perfect. Barbara took good care of us all and was fun to be with too. This was my first time of staying in a youth hostel so the lack of some creature comforts (a bath mat for example!) was a bit disconcerting… however the glorious weather was an unexpected bonus." Sue

"The holiday met my expectations. The walks were excellent and the company more like a group of friends than people I had only just met. The holiday was organised but not over organised and people were left to decide what they wanted to join in with which was excellent".

"It was very relaxed and friendly. There was fun time in the evening, mainly because we were women wanting to be friendly. Also there was a lot of space to relax alone if needed".
