------ ---Intermediate Borrowdale

Intermediate Borrowdale 30 Mar-2 Apr
with Sue B

31st March

Setting off up Glaramara.Everyone had arrived at Glaramara Centre fine the night before and we'd all settled in and enjoyed a good home-cooked meal, sitting around near the fire later.

A pause to catch our breath.

The next morning was cool and clear - perfect for going up Glaramara, the impressive fell at the head of the Borrowdale valley.

On the way up Glaramara.

We climbed the path steadily until we reached the lovely rocky scramble to get onto the top, and found a lovely sheltered spot on top to have our lunch.

Borrowdale in the mist.

Crossing to Combe Door.

The summit looms above us.

Another rest before the scramble.

The short sweet scramble.Lunch on the top in a sheltered spot.

Sun coming out on the way to Allen Crag.

Langdale Pikes in the distance.

The sun was shining and weather getting better by the minute so we all decided we wanted to extend out walk to go over Allen Crags and down by Grains Gill.

Jenny's boot sole stuck with first aid tape.

The stony steps down seemed to go on forever! Jenny's boot sole came unstuck and we improvised with Sue's first aid kit to tape it up!

The dramatic scenery below Great End.

The view they were taking in!Pausing to take it all in.

Down down down the Grains Gill steps.

Sheep on the way down.

Stockley Bridge.

At the bottom we had the good surprise of finding Seathwaite café open! From there is was a delightful and short walk down the valley back to Glaramara Centre in time for showers and dinner.

1st April

A beautiful morning.Ulrike was determined to get her money's worth and hoped we would have a full day again. It was High Spy ridge and Maiden Moor today.

Castle Crag from the Allerdale Ramble.

To keep the wind off, Ulrike turned up in her leather trousers - a sartorial first for the hills!

A pause beside Tongue Gill.

The day started with a steep, short climb to the Allerdale ramble towards Castle Crag.

Old quarry workings on the way up.

Then it was up Rigghead quarries to the col between Dale Head and High Spy.

Walking up through Rigghead quarries.

April first jest!

Pause with a view back down Tongue Gill.

Being April 1st Sue got everyone looking for a rare blue flower that only blooms in that particular valley.

Hindscarth from the path to High Spy.

Nearly to the summit of High Spy.

On High Spy the views over Newlands and Dale Head repayed our efforts.

At the summit of High Spy.
Derwent Water from High Spy.

View along Maiden Moor.
Derwent Water.

Taking in the view from Cat Bells.

Along Maiden Moor was a lovely stride and we found a lunch spot with views over Lodore.

Ready for the descent.

We made good time and everyone agreed we should go up and down Cat Bells to get the full ridge experience!

Wonderful views on the way down.

Tea in Grange beside the river.

It was then down into Grange to the Riverside tea garden.

There we met Lin and Jean who had taken a day off walking and got the bus to meet us. We walked back, plus Lin, along the river back to Glaramara.

2nd April

On the way to Dock Tarn.A short walk, but none the less lovely for that, up to Dock Tarn, stopping on the way at Lingy End to see the buzzards circling.

Enjoying the view from Lingy End.

Dock Tarn was peaceful.

Walking beside Dock Tarn.

Dock Tarn was peaceful and very still.

Walking beside Dock Tarn.

We walked across the moor with views down to Watendlath, and then climbed up Brund Fell to have our lunch on Jopplety How.

Looking down into the Watendlath valley.

On Jopplety How.Crossing to Jopplety How.

Views to Derwentwater were clear and lovely.

Enjoying the views towards Derwent Water.

Looking across to High Spy.

Descending to Rosthwaite.

It was then just a steep short descent back onto the main path down to Rosthwaite. The tea shop beckoned some, whilst others started their journeys home.

Women's Feedback

"Yes I really enjoyed my holiday. My biggest regret is that I was not able to take part in the remaing two walks due to problems on my part"

"Walking Women triumphs again! Excellent"

"Really good walking - very enjoyable and challenging but just at the right level for the group" Anne Marie

"Enjoyed it and it definitely met my expectations. Well looked after and all levels encouraged in an understated way"

"Yes, I enjoyed it, better than expectations. The only problem was my boots collapsed on the 1st walk and that curtailed my enjoyment of that walk!"
