------ ---Skiing La Tania 1

Skiing La Tania 1 - 4-11 March
with Diana & Raffa

4th March

Lake Annecy.Loads of fresh snow had fallen in the French Alps just prior to this holiday in La Tania near Courchevel. Knowing this encouraged us onto our early flights to Geneva!

We all met up with Matt from Family Friendly skiing at Geneva airport and were soon headed towards the mountains.

View from Chalet Nicole.

Our route took us past Lake Annecy in the most beautiful weather.

Relaxing in Chalet Nicoles lounge.

Hugo and Sarah in the kitchen.

When we arrived at Chalet Nicole in La Tania there was tea and cake waiting for us.

Sunset down the valley.

We settled in, sorted out ski and boot hire where needed, met Sarah and Hugo our friendly chalet hosts, and sat chatting in the lounge until dinner.

Dinner at Chalet Nicole.

Some women had been before; for others it was their first time skiing with WW and we all started to get to know each other.

Relaxing after dinner.

After a delicious dinner we sat around chatting some more, then most of us headed to bed fairly early.

5th March

Misty weather in Courchevel.First skiing day, and unfortunately we woke to mist and cloud - a disappointment after yesterday's brilliant sunshine. Later more snow started to fall.

In the morning 4 women had ski school at Courchevel 1850m and were taken there by the chalet minibus to keep things simple.

Laura after first ski school lesson.

Meeting up to ski together.

After checking that everyone had found their instructors ok, I joined Raffa and the rest of the group skiing on the Biolley piste (WW's favourite 'meeting up' run!)

Snow falling in the afternoon.

We had a great warm up ski in the morning, ranging over the pistes above Courchevel 1850, then met up with the others after ski school at the Jump Bar in the resort. All seemed to have gone well.

Val after ski school.

In the afternoon while some of the stronger skiers took a private lesson, the rest of us split up to ski either blue or red runs.

Carmela at Col de la Lose.

Later the snow stopped and the weather brightened a little.

The weather clears.

View from near Chenus.

Some caught the minibus back to the chalet, while others met up at La Soucoupe bar preparatory to skiing back down to La Tania. The lower slopes were unfortunately pretty slushy in the relatively warm air.

Back at the chalet more tea and home-made cake awaited us.

Doing stretches.

We stretched our tired and unaccustomed muscles and relaxed in hot baths before dinner.

Clouds clearing in the evening.

Later as we sat around chatting I brought out the WalkingWomen Buffs. We tried wearing them in different ways...

6th March

Setting off skiing. (Karen Murdoch)Today we woke to beautiful weather and a thin layer of new snow on the pistes. Mmmm!

On the Signal chair lift.

In the morning we ranged over the Courchevel pistes as far as the 1650 slopes, enjoying excellent snow conditions.

For lunch we all met up at the Arc en Ciel restaurant at Verdons which was accessible to all.

The weather was beautiful, though a little warm for the snow. In the afternoon 4 of the group again had a private lesson - on skiing bumps!

The rest of us skied some more mainly above Courchevel 1850m.

Again, a few of us met up at Chenus towards the end of the day to ski down to La Tania together.

7th March

Stunning weather.Today we woke to the most stunning morning with blue sky and clouds in the valley below us.

Waiting for the chair lift to open first thing.

For lunch we skied back over to Chenus above Courchevel 1850m to meet up with the women who'd had ski school.

Lunch at Chenus.

This gave me a chance to take photos of Laura who had started as a beginner but was improving rapidly.

The weather closes in.

Chatting after dinner in the evening.

In the afternoon the weather closed in again. We hoped more snow was on its way as we enjoyed a snug evening in the chalet.

8th March

Going up the Biolley chair in mist.International Women's Day should have been bright and sunny, but unfortuantely dawned misty with low cloud!

The mist was so thick to start with we followed a children's ski school group down!!

At the top of the Signal lift.

The ski schools had a long day today - 4 hours in total to allow them to venture further afield.

A break at La Casserole.

However, Carmela phoned us to say she'd become separated from her ski school group in the thick mist.

We quickly located her - mobiles coming into their own - then skied over to 1650m together to find the rest of her class.

Carmela, Carolyn & Raffa on the Signal chair.

Later we met up for lunch in La Casserole, including Laura who caught the bus and bubble over.

Roc Merlet appearing through the clouds.

Raffa and I skied with the intermediate skiers in the afternoon while others went off to ski some bumpy reds and a fun gulley.

Wigwams on the blue Indiens run.

There was to be a minibus lift home from Courchevel 1650m for a change, so some of us skied down the Indiens run to get there, spotting wigwams on the way!

Eating out at Taiga Bar.

That evening it was the chalet staff's night off, so we all went out to eat at the Taiga Bar in the village.

Eating at La Casserole.

Cooking meat on a Hot Rock.

The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Some women ordered local specialities.

9th March

The next door chalet.Stunning morning to wake up to - blue skies and sunshine again!

Breakfast at the chalet.

View from the chalet balcony.

Getting ski boots on in the boot room.

Setting off from below the chalet.

Looking down on the little reservoir at Praz Juget.

The scenery was simply superb as we took La Tania bubble up, then the chair to Col de la Loze.

View towards Meribel.

We could see the Meribel and Val Thorens slopes to the west of us, and many of the Courchevel slopes were visible closer to hand.

View towards Courchevel.

No one had ski school today so Raffa and I skied to 1650m with the gentler skiers.

Skiing with Laura.

Laura on Loze Est.

Laura had learnt so much over her first week and was now impressing us by her confidence on blue runs!

Skiing down to Gravelles.Hot air balloons at Lac.

Going up on the Biolley chair.

Meeting up with Raffa, Jan & Carolyn.

Beautiful trees.

A strong hoar frost the previous night had left the trees looking like in a fairy tale.

Hoar frost on the trees from Roc Munuir chair.
Loads of snow everywhere.

Taking the Pyramids drag lift.

The scenery from the Pyramids drag lift was some of the most striking in the area, and the snow was in a wonderful condition...

Raffa!

Heading back later we met up with the stronger skiers at the Arc de Ciel restaurant for lunch - which had been invaded by large furry animals!

Jumping in the gulley. (Karen Murdoch)Skiing in the gulley at 1650m. (Karen Murdoch)

At some point that day, Karen took photos of other women playing in the gulley at 1650 - might have been the morning or the afternoon!

10th March

Fresh snow on the chalet balcony.Last skiing day, and we woke to fresh snow - about 3cm in La Tania, and more like 8cm in places on the tops. Fabulous!

View from in front of the chalet.Snow on bushes from the Praz Juget drag.

Coming up through the clouds to Col de la Loze.

Coming up on the drag lift from the top of the bubble - to save time waiting for the chair lift to be cleared of snow - we broke out into sunshine at Col de la Loze.

Sunshine on the tops.

Ellie takes an unaccustomed tumble.

View from the Biolley lift.

Skiing to Viselle bubble.

The clouds came and went, but regardless, the new snow was a total delight to ski on. We made fresh tracks wherever we could, especially Ellie...

A pause towards the bottom of Creux.

Carmela & Val.Val.

For lunch we took the cable car up to Saulire - the highest of the Courchevel peaks - hoping to get above the cloud.

Eating up on Saulire.

Alas the fog was just as dense and we ate our lunch indoors. Some took the cable car down, others skied down Creux, and still more chose Combe de Saulire.

Skiing in the afternoon.

Skiing down to La Tania.

Later in the afternoon we skied down to La Tania with the sun coming through in patches. The views were breathtaking.

Sun lighting the snow on the trees.

Jeanelle getting herself a vin chaud. The end of a glorious day!

On the way we stopped at Bouc Blanc for a vin chaud - sadly, our last of the holiday.

11th March

Leaving for Geneva.Everyone had early starts on this last morning, heading back to Geneva for their flights home.

Last breakfast at the chalet, then goodbyes all round. The snow had been great and we'd had huge fun - even if it hadn't always been sunny!

Women's Feedback

"Brilliant holiday! Exceeded all expectations - could not have been better. My first time skiing and I will definitely want to come back. Ski lessons were fantastic value and, although the instructor was uncompromising, I learned loads. Diana & Raffa were very supportive guides and I felt very safe with their advice. It was nice that they both thought about how one could meet as a group at lunch and ski together outside of ski school."

"Really enjoyed it once again. Accommodation is great, chalet staff and food were excellent. I really appreciated the time Raffa and Diana spent with me and my bad knees. Great group, lots of fun, and managed to cater extremely well for a wide variety of needs and personalities". Jan

"I had a really great time. I thoroughly enjoyed the skiing and thought it was a really nice group of women. I genuinely feel as though I have made some new friends. The holiday was well organised but relaxed and I was very impressed with Diana's approach to making everyone feel included. I felt able to spend time on my own when I needed too, as well as being with the group... The chalet staff were very accommodating and food overall was excellent. I also thought the transfers (from the airport & in the resort) were excellent and extremely reliable. My morning's ski with Raffa was a highlight of the holiday. She was extremely patient and encouraging and my confidence grew as the morning went on. The holiday far exceeded my expectations. It was a lovely bunch of women and I had a great time. Thank you!" Carolyn

"I LOVED my holiday... it exceeded my expectations! As a single traveller I really appreciated the inclusive atmosphere both on the piste and in the chalet. The standard of catering by Family Friendly Skiing was just superb and I will write to Tony to that effect as I was so impressed! The transport provided was also much appreciated. I think the combination of WW and FFS is a winning team! The only problem is that the week was too short!" Val
