------ ---Intermediate Snowdonia Trek

Intermediate Snowdonia Trek 4-7 May
with Lorraine

4th May

We all arrived at different times, but in glorious sunshine, to The Heights in Llanberis where we were staying that night.

Dinner was a little late but delicious.

5th May

Outside the Heights Hotel hostel - ready to go!After breakfast and waving our luggage off as it was taken on to the next place, we set off from The Heights. It was another beautiful day, although the views were a little hazy.

A rest on the way up the Maesgwm valley.

We made our way up the road and along a track before taking the path up the side of Maesgwm valley.

At the col.On the way up the Maesgwm Valley.

At the col between Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion.

Reaching the col between Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion we sat for a while and enjoyed the sun.

Views from the top of Moel Cynghorion.

Enjoying a cool breeze we walked up to the top of Moel Cynghorion with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains, and in particular of Mynydd Mawr and the Nantille Ridge.

And photos on the top of Moel Cynghorion!Heading across the top of Moel Cynghorion.

View down over Llyn Ffynnon-y-gwas

We headed down to Llyn Ffynnon-y-gwas which made a perfect lunch spot.

Lunch beside the lake.

Lunch beside the lake.

After lunch we took a path off the Snowdon Ranger track which took us across grass, past Snowdon looking impressive in the sun and through some interesting old slate quarries.

Walking to Rhyd Dhu village.

Walking to Rhyd Dhu village.

Mmm.. so that is where we are!

Old quarry workings.

The lower slopes were covered in bluebells.

Bluebells everywhere on Snowdons lower slopes.

Finally we arrived at the village of Rhyd Ddu where some of us went to a lovely tea room serving delicious welsh cream teas and others went to the pub down the road.

Wonderful cream scones!

At the tea room in Rhyd Dhu.

Some chose the pub!

From there it was a short walk along the road to the Snowdon Ranger Youth Hostel where we were to stay for the next two nights.

Playing giant Jenga at the hostel.

That evening after a fabulous dinner we played pool, giant jenga and other games in the games room.

.... or pool.

6th May

In front of Snowdon Ranger Hostel. The next morning we set off with a forecast of rain for our day on Mynydd Mawr.

Fine weather on the way up Mynydd Mawr.

Walking up through the bluebells.

Nevertheless, it stayed dry and was quite warm as we made our way up through more bluebells and into the forest of Tros-y-gol.

Views back to Llyn Cwellyn.

We had lovely views of Llyn Cwellyn on our way.

A pause before the ascent.

Heading up towards the top of Mynydd Mawr.

We left the forest and headed up towards the summit of Mynydd Mawr above the cliffs of Craig Cwm Du.

Group photo on the top of Mynydd Mawr.

The wind picked up and it was quite chilly at the top. Nevertheless we had views of the surrounding mountains to reward us and ensure a sense of achievement.

Great sense of achievement!

Lunch on the summit.

Looking down the ridge.

Following lunch we made our way along and down a ridge which was narrow in places.

Heading down the ridge in the wind.

There were lots of lambs about and at one point a lamb mistook one of our group for its mother, rushing towards us, bleating!

Heading down the ridge back to Rhyd Dhu.

The rain finally caught up with us as we walked down the forestry track into Rhyd Ddu where this time we again split ourselves between the tea room and the cosy pub.

Once again we had a delicious dinner at the Youth Hostel (with fab staff) and the returned to the games room.

7th May

Leaving Snowdon Ranger hostel. We loaded our bags into the minibus taxi before setting off on foot in mixed weather conditions.

Heading up the Snowdon Ranger path.

We walked up the Snowdon Ranger path behind the hostel and arrived back at the col.

Looking back to where we had walked yesterday.

Here we had to bid sad farewells to one of the group who was booked on a much earlier train. (It was an easy path from here back to Llanberis).

Bidding sad farewell.

From the col the rest of us took the steep path up Foel Goch and then walked along the ridge to Foel Gron with cloud rolling in and intermittent views.

Walking to Foel Goch.

On Goel Gron.

Lunch on the top of Moel Eilio.

We arrived at our goal, Moel Eilio, in complete cloud and consoled ourselves with lunch and lots of chocolate!

... and lots of chocolate!

Soon after setting off again we dropped below the cloud, and could see across to the Menai Strait and Isle of Anglesey in one direction and the Glyders in the other.

Dropping below the cloud towards Llanberis.
Walking back to Llanberis.

Walking back to Llanberis with great views.

Arriving back in Llanberis we collected our luggage from The Heights Hotel hostel, then all went for celebratory cakes and cream teas in the nearby tea rooms.

Blackthorne.

We all agreed that it had been a great holiday and fabulous introduction to the Snowdonia mountains!

Women's Feedback

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my first walk with WalkingWomen and it's given me the desire to go on more. It was great to meet a friendly diverse group of women and it more than lived up to any expectations I may have had. Lorraine was excellent, very calm, relaxed and assured. She made sure that the whole group was coping with the terrain. Excellent, challenging choice of walks". Ann

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my holiday. The walks were fantastic and everything was so well organised. Lorraine is a very friendly and approachable guide who made me feel totally at ease straight away. I had every confidence in her ability and she made many sensible suggestions at many points. She has an excellent balance of being the person in charge, but also fun and personable. I honestly cannot fault her approach! Thanks very much for your hard work!"

"This holiday proved to be an excellent choice as Lorraine was an excellent guide, informing us of any details we needed to know in relation to welcoming us to the walk, transfer of luggage, items we needed to take with us on the walks, keeping the group together during walks and tracking back to gather stragglers, making sure packed lunches and meals were ordered etc. very good!"
