After a welcome chat, we ate a sumptuous meal followed by coffee and a description of the next days' route options, given by Polly and myself. ![]() A few women went for a walk around Grasmere as Polly's lovely dog, Dillon, needed to stretch his legs, as did we, after dinner and eventually ended the evening with a drink in the village. |

![]() Women chose which grade they preferred. Polly and Anita took the Intermediate walk up Helm Crag. ![]() ![]() ![]() They then walked along the splendid ridge as far as Calf Crag and the sun even shone through at times! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From the end of the ridge they descended into Far Easedale - passing small gorges, rushing streams and spectacular waterfalls... the rain had been good for something!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From here we continued to Cathedral Cave, an absolute gem of a surprise hidden in Cathedral Quarry. ![]() ![]() Once outside, Una, Maureen, Lyn, Louisa and I shared a memorable time as we ascended through the centre of the quarry with all the agility and grace of a mountain goat! ![]() The sides of Cathedral Quarry are regularly used by climbers. We watched a brave young woman descend an abseil. She then asked us if we had all done it before!! ![]() ![]() ![]() After a brief stop, we continued through the cave and enjoyed the amble along the Cumbria Way to Colwith Force, where we sat in the wood and ate lunch near the water. ![]() ![]() The sun even appeared, shining through the trees, highlighting the beautiful lime green colours of the leaves. ![]() After lunch, we continued along to Skelwith Force succumbing to a short downpour, just before heading into the wood and arriving at Chester's Café. ![]() Chester was the owner's dog who once ruled the roost. We were able to dry off in the queue, before sitting in comfy seats to enjoy an afternoon coffee. ![]() ![]() ![]() The last section of the walk took us past Skelwith Force and along another section of the beautiful Cumbria Way. ![]() ![]() ![]() As we walked back to Elterwater we had excellent views of the Langdale Pikes and enjoyed the surprisingly subtle aroma of the wild garlic. ![]() Back at Glenthorne we met up with the Intermediate group and were surprised to hear of the challenging weather conditions they had experienced as we had enjoyed such nice weather, but that's the Lake District for you! A delicious meal was enjoyed again and everyone chatted over coffee about Sunday's options before retiring for a fairly early night. |

![]() After breakfast, Polly set off with the Intermediate group up to Easedale Tarn via Sour Milk Gill waterfall. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Easedale tarn encircled by hills was serene and they had it virtually to themselves. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They walked around the tarn, then headed down into Far Easedale, and so back to Grasmere. ![]() Anita and I meanwhile set off with the Low-Intermediate group through the village and up Kelbarrow under Silver Howe and across Dow Bank. ![]() ![]() We had amazing views across Grasmere and Rydal Water and the women who had tackled Helm Crag on Saturday were able to get a good view of their route. ![]() ![]() ![]() We had a brief stop on the edge of Dow Bank, then headed off to Loughrigg Terrace where the bluebells were out providing colour across the hillside. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The sun was out and the views were stunning, too good not to stop for lunch! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A scamper down the hill to the water and across into the wood, brought us to the Grasmere road. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We crossed the road to follow the path up to the beginning of the coffin route, between Grasmere and Rydal. ![]() A short walk down past Dove Cottage and we were back in Grasmere, where we met up with the Intermediate group to stay our farewells. |
Women's Feedback
"Thoroughly enjoyed my first experience with WalkingWomen. Fantastic walks, scenery & food. I will definitely be coming again! Everything, just everything was perfect".
"Enjoyable weekend. As always, met my expectations and I will be back for holiday number 8 in the autumn!"
"Very good, met all my expectations. Relaxing holiday in lovely surroundings".
"Polly and co were really lovely and supportive as I was a bit out of my depth".
"I felt very well looked after".
"Grasmere village is a lovely location - although with plenty of tourists, it didn't feel overrun. Glenthorne is nicely tucked away up a lane, so you have a very peaceful setting with nice views of helms cragg and the ridge beyond. The accommodation was excellent and the showers were hot and a strong pressure. We did a challenging first day walk with bad weather conditions and some of the group may have been better advised to do low intermediate. However, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and enjoy this type of group walking holiday. The leaders were very friendly and nice to be with".
"A thoroughly enjoyable weekend with friendly women, good accommodation and leaders who were friendly and looked after us all well". Martha
"As a first timer, I found the whole experience very worthwhile. The walks were excellent and the guides exceptional. They were knowledgeable, professional in all things and very supportive. We walked in a small group on the first day and the fun and rapport mixed with real effort of the rewarding kind was a joy". Maureen
"On Saturday, the gods decided to throw everything at us but we are women, we are invincible! Awesome, lovely, wonderful and stupendous! I think I enjoyed it! Can't wait to experience more WW hols".
"This was my first experience of a WalkingWomen holiday. It was very enjoyable and exceeded my expectations. The organisation of the weekend was excellent, not overdone but nothing left to chance. The availability of a choice of walk level was an advantage. Given the short time we were there, the lengths and timing of the walks was ideal. I walked with Sara and she is an excellent guide. She was totally professional and I felt safe with her whilst having a lot of fun. Thank you!" Una
"This was my 4th holiday and it was every bit as good as the last 3. I always feel slightly shy for the first few minutes but in my experience the guides help to alleviate the initial nerves straight away by their friendly and relaxed manner. My only criticism of a weekend, a 2 day holiday, is that its simply isn't long enough! I went on both the Low Intermediate walks and they were both wonderful. We were challenged gently, which was great and I came home with a sense of achievement. Our guide, Sara B, was a joy to walk with, friendly, fun and very knowledgeable. I felt completely at ease and confident with her. As for the other ladies I met, I hope to keep in contact with some as we had a memorable time together. Lots of laughter and fun - WW holidays are great, keep up the excellent work!" Louise
