26th May

Dale Fort. This first Pembrokshire Coast Path started at spectacular Dale Fort field study centre on Dale Head, and finished at St Davids.

I had arrived the previous evening and dropped food off at the 2 self-catering hostels our trip would include.

Gladioli.

Looking down on rocks and sea from Dale Head.

Women started arriving early in the evening, which was pleasant and sunny.

Dale.

Some of us went for a short walk before dinner.

View from Dale.

After dinner we met up in the centre bar, which is cosy and friendly.

27th May

Setting off from Dale Fort Centre.Today we set off along the coast to Marloes. The weather was a little challenging - but the flowers were superb!

View along the coast.

Looking along the windy coast.

Celtic carving on a stone.Wild waves and winds.

Very strong winds and wild seas.

Terrific seas.

We decided to call by Marloes Hostel early to drop off those women who really had had enough of the weather - and to allow hardier souls to at least dry out a little.

Hardy souls.

We then returned to the coast path to finish the walk around the headland.

Sitting on the rocks in the wind.

Walking along the coast.

The sea was amazing and very exciting and we really kind of enjoyed the wild wind.

Walking back along the lanes.

Foxgloves.Campion.

We used the sheltered lanes to return to Marloes Hostel as the wind speed was too exciting for the last piece of coast path.

28th May

The weather is much better today, though it was wild during the night.

So we set off in good spirits heading for Broad Haven.

At St Brides we stopped for lunch and found some fantastic Celtic crosses by the church, I photographed these with a view of St Brides castle behind them.

Arum lilies.

Along the path we met a woman walking to coast path to raise money for the lifeboats at Milford Haven so Sandra gave her a fiver.

The woods as we approach Broadhaven.Looking down through the woods.

The last part of the path into Broadhaven faces NE rather than west, and in this sheltered spot there is woodland, a fantastic contrast to the open coastlands beforehand.

Reaching Broadhaven.

In Broadhaven some of us found Londis and the ice creams irrestable before we reached the youth hostel.

On the beach after supper.

Windsurfers leaving the beach.

After dinner we spent the evening down on the beach watching the sun go down.

The sun sets.

29th May

Broadhaven beach.Another sunny day today as we head towards Newgale.

Group photo on the headland.

Rescued animals at the small holding.Donkeys and other rescued animals.

At Druidstone Haven we found an amazing ecohouse built into the hillside and further along the coast, we found some rescued animals by a smallholding.

Nolton Haven.

This belonged to Jim the Ghost - as we find out later from the photographer running his most excellent exhibition at Nolton Haven.

Walking up from the beach at Newgale.

At Newgale we found a great café called 'The Sands' and stopped for a brew.

Newgale Beach.

A drink in the sun.

Afterwards some of us investigated the long sandy beach here 1.5 miles long.

On Newgale Beach.

Others walked up the coast path towards Solva, before returning to catch the last Puffin bus which got us back to Broadhaven in time to shower and change before dinner.

30th May

Setting off from Solva. We were dropped at Solva by the taxi minibus. This beautiful harbour is a glacial melt water channel from when the ice sheet covering Wales melted.

Solva harbour.

A waterproof day!

Field full of mares.

A km into the coast path there is a field full of mares with foals.

Showing off their prowess.

A whole herd, they are gorgeous, and the mares gallop up and down showing off their prowess.

Mare and foal.

Galloping up and down.

Walking along the coast path.

Superb coastal views.

A well at St Nons.A gravestone at St Nons.

We have lunch at St Non's chapel (Immaculate mother of St David patron Saint of Wales).

Lunch at St Nons.

This prompts interesting lunchtime conversation on immaculate conception and other esoteric matters.

Some women choose to shorten today's walking by going into St David's from here to visit the sights of Britain's smallest City.

Farmer and his dog!

The rest of us continue round the rugged coastline, past the sandy bay of Porthclais where we find toilets and a tiny café with hot chocolate.

Cliff top house.

Then rested and watered, we continued onward to St Justinians (from where we will catch the boat to Ramsey Island tomorrow morning).

Walking on towards St Justinians.Walking along the path towards St Justinians.

Whitesands Bay.

At Whitesands bay we are nearly there just a km or so to go and so we stop for coffee and ice cream.

Cheeky chickens!

Cheeky chickens on the back path to St Davids Hostel.

Passing a local farm.

We order wine to go with dinner from a local taxi firm and he delivers so we give him a tip.

More beautiful horses.

The hostel kitchen door warns of Badgers that may break in at night and eat all your food we bolt the door but stay up on Badger watch.

A black cat came in and started eating food we'd put down for the Badgers. For a moment we thought it was them!

However, I think I heard them later when everyone else was in bed.

31st May

Setting off to St Justinians. Those women going on the boat to the RSPB Bird Reserve on Ramsey Island set off early to walk the 4-5km to St Justinians. (Please let us have your Ramsey Island photos to add here!)

St Davids YHA.

More Welsh mountain ponies.

Later the taxi picked them up from St Justinians, and collected the rest of us from St Davids hostel for our drive back to Dale to collect our cars - and start home.

Women's Feedback

"I really enjoyed the walking, the coastal path was fabulous and apart from one poor weather day, the views were great". Kirsty

"I thoroughly enjoyed the walking, the coastal path lived up to my expectations and apart from one day, we were very lucky with the weather and had some wonderful views as we walked along". Hazel

"This was my first WalkingWomen holiday so I wasn't sure what to expect (my first solo walking holiday in fact!) I enjoyed it very much. I loved the organisation, plenty of food, being able to get up and just walk. I had never stayed in youth hostels before and it was quite difficult at times sharing small spaces with seven other women but I did like the fact that I learned such a lot from the experience as well as having a great time walking. I would certainly do it again!" Denise
