------ ---Gentle Peak District

Gentle Peak District 4-8 October
with Sally

4th October

Losehill Hall, near Castleton.Everyone arrived at Losehill hall in time for the evening meal at 19.00.

Even Barbara who had been held up on the M1 due to an accident arrived just as the soup was being served - we found out later she had been to Losehill Hall before and knew the food was too good to be missed.

At Losehill Hall.

We were all on one table which made it easy for us all to chat and get to know each other.

5th October

Setting off for Hope on a beautiful day.We spent the day in T-shirts, the weather was so good. After the mist had cleared there was not a cloud to be seen.

We walked on field paths to Hope and on to Aston where we crossed the main road and visited Navio Roman Fort.

Views across the valley.

It was such a clear day you could see for miles and the views were fantastic.

Crossing the river.

We walked through a herd of Jacobs' sheep and stopped for lunch at Hope where we had a look around.

Views across the Hope valley.

Beautiful views.

Endless stiles.

A break in the sunshine.

Lovely Peak District views.

The church was closed but we laughed at the gargoyles.

Gargoyles.

Walking back to Losehill.

We followed Peakshole Water back through the fields.

Donkeys near Castleton.

In Castleton everyone split up to go sightseeing or shopping before returning to Losehill Hall for another cosy evening.

Sitting around in the lounge before dinner.

6th October

Crossing a stream. Started hot and sunny and became overcast by lunchtime.

Maeve and Heather had a dilemma this morning - was the Rugby more important than the walking?

Another stunning day.

They sensibly decided it wasn't and set of with us for Hope Cross on slightly steeper and rockier paths than yesterday.

Superb views.

We lunched at Hope Cross with super views over the Edale valley, Kinder Scout and Rushup Edge.

A pause along the way.

Highland cattle.

Walking to Hope Cross.

A break on the way back.

Then we followed the old Roman road back into Hope where 4 people ran into the nearest bar to watch the rugby (only missed 20 mins).

Walking back to Losehill.

The rest of us had a coffee and then ambled back to Castleton by field paths followed by a visit to Peak Cavern for some.

Stopping for coffee in Castleton.

Dinner at Losehill.

In the evening we enjoyed a couple of free bottles of wine supplied by the Land Management Group who had been in the hotel the previous 2 nights. Many thanks to them.

7th October

Edale.Very hot and sunny start, clouding over again by lunch time.

We set off to Edale via a short stiff pull to Hollins Cross where we rested up and admired the views into the Hope and Edale valleys.

Eating proved difficult due to some over friendly local sheep who obviously recognised the quality of Losehill Hall pack lunches.

Walking up to Hollins Cross.

Walking up to Hollins Cross.

We then gently contoured under Mam Tor to reach Barber Booth.

Lunch overlooking Rushup Edge.

We stopped for lunch at a picnic area overlooking Rushup Edge and then continued on to Edale along the Pennine Way.

Cheaky sheep.

Views from our lunch spot.

Walking back to Edale.

At Edale we spent some time in the visitor centre and had a quick drink in a café while waiting for our bus back to Castleton.

8th October

A change in the weather.Total change in weather, thick mist and drizzle but our spirits weren't dampened and we set off after clearing our rooms for Castleton.

Setting off for the caverns.

We walked along the Cavern route passing firstly Speedwell Cavern then stopping to do a bit of last minute present shopping and have a coffee in Treak Cliff Cavern.

Then a local Bradwell ice-cream in the Blue John Cavern where visibility was down to 100m max.

Deep in the mist.Mist along the old road.

On the way back we walked along the old road to view the land slip problems of the Mam Tor area.

We passed Odin Mine - the first lead mine in the area and returned to Losehill Hall for our lunch via field paths.

Walking back to Losehill.

After lunch we said our goodbyes and headed for home. Hope to see you all again some time.
