Intermediate Alpujarras 13-20 Oct
with Sue B

13th October

Hotel Los BerchulesOur flights from East Midlands and Gatwick had arrived in Granada in the early evening - to be met by Alejandro's transport from the Hotel Los Berchules.

We travelled to the little village of Los Berchules through the evening light, arriving in time for dinner at the hotel, and a welcome bed!

14th October

Getting ready to go walking. We woke to enjoy the views from the hotel, perched as it at the outskirts of the village on a hillside above a gorge with mountain views around us.

View from in front of the hotel.

Walking out through the village.

After breakfast we sorted ourselves out and set off on foot from the hotel for our first walk - up the Rio Grande gorge.

Our first mule.

Our route initially took us towards the village and between the lovely flower bedecked village houses and the old village warehouse.

Leaving the village.

From here we contined out into the campo and along the acequia (water channel) shaded by chestnut trees with the gorge below us.

Looking down into the gorge.Headed along the hillside above the gorge.

There were views up to the rocks of Reyconcillos where the last Moorish King in the area Aben Aboo hid out from the Christians.

Agave flowers made arches across our path as we walked down into the Lobras gorge to the village of Lobras.

The village also boasts a 300 year old fountain and a lovely washhouse - and great views over the lower slopes of Sierra Nevada.

On the way back over the hills to Morayma we were caught in a thunder storm and the sandstone paths became rivers of red water.

The log fire and candlelight at Morayma Hotel were a welcome sight - where we ate that night.

19th October

Today sadly we left Los Berchules to journey back to Granada for our last night.

Here we were to stay in a lovely old courtyard hotel in the old centre - and everyone loved the hotel with its atmosphere and rooftop terrace.

We explored a little in the afternoon - seeing the sights of Granada. In the evening we ate out in a restaurant in the old centre.

20th October

Today, after a good night, some women went to visit the Alhambra. We had arranged their tickets beforehand to ensure the got into this extraordinary Moorish palace.

Meanwhile, others made varous excursions...

Old Moorish baths.

Some of went to Sacromonte to see the caves, others to the wonderful Banuelos Moorish baths with star shaped windows in the ceiling to let in the light, and some to the shops.

Meeting up for lunch by the river Darro.

We all met up for a lovely lunch by the river Darro before our late afternon flights.

It was sad to say goodbye to each other - it had been a great first WW holiday in the Alpujarras.

Women's Feedback

"This was such a good holiday. Each walk offered a different view of the region with different landscapes and village life. The group was such a wonderful mix of interesting women who were so laidback that being a bit slower uphill was not a problem. A challenging and relaxing holiday. The hotel was great. Very friendly and accommodating. Our guide was great, very friendly helpful and very good company. The walks were very varied. Such a wonderful, relaxing holiday. No pressure to race around on the walks" Lin

Excellent accommodation, Genuine hospitality & friendly attention. Sue is very patient and friendly, very well looked after" Breda

"This holiday was perfect! The walks were wonderful and varied. The hotel was comfortable and friendly and the food was great and the meals were heavenly. Sue was a wonderful guide and the women in the group were great company. The accommodation was lovely. It felt Spanish but with Wendy an English co-owner, she understood English foibles like vegetarians! Sue was an excellent guide, her calmness and insight have a very positive effect on everyone. I think this is a walking holiday that I would like to go on again. I think it is great!" Anna

"I liked the area, very Spanish and not full of English villas. There was a great variety of scenery in the walks which I hadn't expected so it was always interesting. I enjoyed walks where you can see over distances-mountains, the villages, towns on hillsides, variety of paths too. I enjoyed the day in Granada-enjoyed the opportunity to explore-good accommodation there too. Good group of women, all go on well. Accommodation excellent, comfortable large rooms. Beautiful balcony views, friendly, good food, packed lunches were fine. Good variety of walks, felt intermediate for me, a sense of satisfaction after the walk and within my abilities so no too tired after. Plenty of chances to stop and look. It was good being in an unspoiled area, people were friendly. The trip to the museum and its guardian was an experience not to be missed. We completed satisfying walks and felt unhurried. Kept the 'holiday' in walking holiday!" Nancy

"Holiday was well organised, friendly and relaxed. Good group of women with very little problem at all. Good value for money! Very relaxing and tranquil environment to stay in after a hard days working. Walks were very good, lovely variety, managed to see different landscapes of the area as well" Kirsty
