--Gentle Walking & Contemplation

Gentle Walking & Contemplation 22-25 Sept
with Heidi & Angie

Due to illness, Heather P has unfortunately not been able to run either of her Walking & Contemplation breaks this year. Heidi and Angie between them replaced Heather on this break in September.

22nd Sept

Glenthorne Guest House on Easedale Rd in Grasmere. The holiday started with tea and homemade cakes in the lounge at Glenthorne as we started to get to know each other and learn new names.

Helm Crag ridge.

There was time for a mediation session before dinner where we all focussed on arriving, our breath, and relaxing into the holiday.

We had a delicious dinner and all retired relatively early after coffee.

23rd Sept

Misty view from White Moss Common.Angie led a meditation session before breakfast for those who wished.

The forecast was for showers and at breakfast it was pouring with rain. Fortunately it mostly cleared though we set out with our waterproofs on just in case.

Walking along the coffin trail.

As the day progressed the weather improved and we even had some sunshine later in the afternoon!

We walked along then coffin trail to Rydal Mount but stopped to sit and contemplate Rydal water along the way - from lovely White Moss Common.

Walking back beside Rydal Water.

Angie read a brief blessing that had first been read out at Greenham Common. She also lead us through a walking meditation which we could use.

At Rydal Hall, some stopped for a hot drink while the others sat contemplating the water.

Walking back next to Rydal Water.

Our return route took us along the Rydal shore and gently up onto Loughrigg Terrace where we had lunch.

Angie then helped us to re-focus on a walking mediation. In the morning we had walked in silence, and those that wanted could continue this in the afternoon. The rest chatted quietly.

Beside Loughrigg Tarn.

We headed to Loughrigg Tarn and sat quietly beside the water. It is a beautiful spot.

Turning back, we took the route down through Redbank Woods to Grasmere, getting back in time for home-made cakes and tea.

Angie led another pre-dinner meditation followed by more delicious food and a quiet evening chatting.

24th Sept

Walking to Colwith Force from Skelwith Bridge. There were a few conflicting weather forecasts for the day and optimistically we chose to believe the most pleasant one.

At Colwith Force.

For the first few hours it looked like we would be proven right. We shared lifts to Skelwith Bridge where we set off towards Colwith Force (waterfall).

Colwith Force.

We sat for awhile contemplating these striking falls, then carried on to Tilberthwaite.

The fine weather suddenly changed and as the day progressed the weather got worse and worse - horizontal driving rain and strong winds.

In Tilberthwaite barn.

A farmer called us 'wild women' for braving the elements! And was kind enough to let us shelter in his barn for a quick bite to eat and a chance to warm up!

Tilberthwaite from inside the barn!

Hats and gloves were put on and hot tea shared as we looked out at Tilberthwaite through the drips.

Slater Bridge.

We then headed for Slater Bridge and onto the welcome sight of the Britannia Inn at Elterwater.

Walking back to Elterwater.

There we all had a hot drink, thrilled that we were out of the elements.

On the way back to Elterwater.

The rain stopped and we started to head back to Skelwith Bridge beside Elterwater, but were turned back as it was flooded! So we took the alternative route along the road.

An altogether exciting and adventurous day with not too much of a chance to sit quietly and contemplate. But full of satisfaction nevertheless.

Angie led a pre dinner meditation followed by more good food and a quiet evening in the lounge.

Heading out towards Sour Milk Gill waterfall. On this last day the sun was shining and the air felt scrubbed clean by the previous day's wind and rain.

Pausing on the way to Sour Milk Gill.

There was the usual meditation followed by breakfast.

Walking slowly up to Sour Milk Gill waterfall.

Our walk was to Easdale Tarn. Heidi introduced a slow walking and counting meditation which everyone tried.

Everyone enjoying the sun!

A sit on the way up.On the way to the waterfall.

Sour Milk Gill waterfall was impressive after yesterday's rain.

Arriving at Easedale Tarn.

At the tarn we sat quietly and had a first lunch.

Sitting at Easedale Tarn.

Easedale Tarn was simply beautiful!

We decided to head back the way we came and got back to Glenthorne in time for a cup of tea before heading off on our respective journeys home.

Women's Feedback

"My holiday was a thoroughly enjoyable one, I had not meditated before so did not know what to expect. The accommodation was fine, as always my special diet was well catered for". Diane

"Heidi was very supportive in some difficult conditions. Always explained well what was planned and negotiated any changes with the group". Ruth

"I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. I had only done a gentle one before so was a little apprehensive. I found the walks to be challenging without being too strenuous. Heidi was an excellent guide and well able to adapt for the weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. She is a very calm person who instills confidence". Trisha

"My first WalkingWomen holiday - weather wet - walking wonderful - very happy".

"Have done WalkingWomen holidays for 4 years - it has lost none of its 'wow' factor". Penny

"Excellent… had lovely walks despite appalling weather. Easedale Tarn in the sun on Tuesday morning was a joy, as was Heidi's wonderful way of going uphill meditating on each step and going slowly". Jen

"Although I was nervous of going on a walking holiday on my own, I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. I was made welcome and put at ease. It exceeded my expectations! Heidi looked after us very well. The walks were excellent and her tips for walking up and down the steeper parts were very good. Keeping holidays to small groups is a good idea. All the group were friendly". Jane

"An additional feedback on the contemplation walking days last weekend: The last day has surpassed everything else in the way it was organised and - partly because of the stunning weather. I wasn't going to take part in that walk because someone who had been said that we would get very dirty and wet. When I mentioned it to Heidi she immediately brought it up in the group and then planned a route where we stayed clean which was nice for the journey home." Ruth
