High Intermediate La Gomera 22-29 April
with Marian

22nd April

Arrival in Tenerife and ferry to San Sebastian.

We all met up in the Aeropuerto Sur and took taxis to the ferry terminal.

We managed to catch the earlier ferry giving us more time to relax in San Sebastian before dinner.

Eating out in San Sebastian - day 1.

23rd April

Agulo to Vallehermoso

Heading up from Agulo.A great start to the trek, as we set off towards the visitor centre above Agulo.

The steep path up from Agulo is in the shade in the morning, which makes for a comfortable ascent.

After a lunch stop we had time to look round the Visitor's Centre and its beautiful gardens, and have coffee in the bar across the road.

Terraced farm on the way to Vallehermoso.

From here we follow a track which meanders down through woodlands and small finca farmsteads growing grape vines, fruits and vegetables.

A break on the way to Vallehermoso.

As we approached Vallehermoso the route heads up towards a ridge with spectacular views, the path passes just below Roque Cano.

(Jenny Luscombe)

The Roque is a volcanic plug that is a local landmark above the rural village of Vallehermoso.

Hotel Tamahuche.(Jenny Luscombe)

We arrived at Hotel Tamahucha, out home for the next couple of days, to find our bags waiting for us. The hotel is a great success, and we settle in to our rooms.

View from the hotel.(Jenny Luscombe)

We saw statues on the way to the restaurant. For dinner ate at a local restaurant called Agana.

Stunning statues.

At dusk there is an orchestra of tiny green frogs in the stream. We went to look at them with a torch.

24th April

Circular Ridge walk from Vallehermoso

Setting out on our ridge walk.Today we would do a stunning circular walk from Vallehermoso over looking the sea for part of the way.

Setting off for the ridge.

The weather was comfortable as we started the days walk by passing above the church and then out of the village through Finca farmsteads.

On the way to the ridge.

One of the farmsteads sells their produce from the garden. From there we continue onward and uphill past juniper scrublands and into laurel forest.

Beautiful goats.

On reaching the cliffs.

We made our way up the valley, before emerging on the ridge between Vallehermoso and the sea. The view was misty.

Misty view from the ridge.

We had lunch in a secluded picnic spot.

Looking down on crashing waves far below.

Walking along the ridge.

After lunch we followed the ridge where the views were beautiful down to the sea and across Vallehermoso to Roque Cano.

The sea far below.

Moon landscape - eroded soil.

View of the cliffs.

After the steep descent from the ridge we stopped to swim in the pool on the sea front or just relax in the bar.

Beautiful cats in the village.

The pool was open after being renovated, and is recommended by our group of swimmers. It is a weekday so they had the pool to themselves.

Some of us visit the 'Castillo Del Mar' - a local party and music venue with ramparts that jut out into the sea.

Bridge to Castillo del Mar.

At Castillo del Mar.

Bananas growing.

They have a photographic exhibition and good cakes.

Roque Cano behind the hotel.

That evening we went out to eat in Vallehermoso.

25th April

Vallehermoso to Chipude

Our luggage minibus dropped us at 'Las Rosas', and we headed up the valley following a stream at first then up onto the ridge for a while.

Walking up towards the cloud forest.

Views clear of the trees.

(Jenny Luscombe)

We then swung upward again through the ancient laurel forests of Garajonay national park (a UNESCO world heritage site).

Reaching the cloud forest.

Tempting a goat.

A breautiful goat.

The route later we passed through a couple of small pretty villages within the lower altitude 'Parque Rural' zone, and crossed the head of the Valle Gran Rey where we saw Kestrels.

Walking to Chipude.

Walking to Chipude.

We reached Sonia's bar in Chipude in good time. Sonia is very efficient, and the food, service and rooms here are excellent.

26th April

Chipude to Playa Santiago

Morning view from Chipude. The early part of the day is in the Laurel forests, which cover the peak of Garajonay.

There are unusual weather conditions today - a hot wind and hazy sky. This is the "Calima" - a wind that sometimes blows from the Sahara.

From the peak of Garajonay, the highest point on the island at 2482m, we headed downhill toward the sea.

Roque Agando that we can see from this ridge is part of our route on the way back to San Sebastian later in the week.

Roque Agando.

Lunch was on a rocky ridge above the Benchigua valley. After lunch we head down again, towards Imada, a lovely village.

Here we sit in the sun and drink juices and coffees for a while, and book a taxi to pick us up at the bottom of the path in three hours time.

Starting down the barranco

Looking down the barranco.

The trail continues down a barranco (gorge) where the path is a ledge naturally incised into the immense volcanic cliffs.

Flowers and fruiting cactus are everywhere around, and we meet goats on the track as we finally approach the village of El Rumbaza.

The natural path incised into the cliff.

Reaching El Rumbaza village.

That evening once we'd settled into our shared apartments - two to each apartment, we went out to eat at El Cuevita.

Playa Santiago.(Jenny Luscombe)

This is the best restaurant in Playa Santiago and is set in a little cave on the seafront. The food is great here.

27th April

Rest Day

Playa Santiago offers swimming and relaxation that is much needed after the last few day's walking walking.

Playa Santiago.

Some of us take the ferry to visit Valle Gran Rey.

In the evening we decide to eat in a different restaurant a few doors down the seafront from our apartments.

(Jenny Luscombe)

We enjoy a good meal here and are getting to know some of the local wines. We can hear Atlantic shearwaters, which nest on the cliffs above.

28th April

Playa Santiago to San Sebastian

Mesa Taxis again drop us off at the end of the road in a village called Pastrana. The route winds up through the village and surrounding finca farms with their papayas and almond trees.

Then upward into the Benchigua barranco and Benchigua village, as we rounded a spur in the valley we could see the ridge that we had descended two days earlier on our way down to Playa Santiago.

(Jenny Luscombe)

Roque Agando on the opposite side of the valley is our first goal today.

Roque Agando.

The path passes up through 850m of ascent as the vegetation changes to wild cactus, wild flowers and finally pine forest. The vistas are stunning…. again.

From the ridge behind Roque Agando we take a route down into the valley behind San Sebastian.

We pass through pine and eucalyptus forest, as well as old settlements, some abandoned during the migrations to Latin America.

(Jenny Luscombe)

Roque Agando.

(Jenny Luscombe)

Autbuses Mesa are waiting for us in Las Lajas, the first village we come to, to take us down the road into San Sebastian for our showers and our celebratory meal.

Going out to eat in San Sebastian.

We tried a different restaurant this year, Paulo's which does very good fish and seafood, I will definitely go there again.

After dinner some of us visited the Cuban bar that stays open late in the main square.

29th April

Ferry to Tenerife

Leaving early in the morning. The Manchester flight left early so those on the later Gatwick flight chose to travel over to Tenerife on a later ferry, so they could sleep in and have a leisurely breakfast.

Arriving back on Tenerife.

We all got home safe after our trek around the island of La Gomera!

Women's Feedback

"This was the best WalkingWomen holiday I hve been on. The walking was excellent and I really enjoyed the variety of the scenery - a beautiful island. I thought all the accommodation was excellent, especially the hotel in Vallehermosa. Marian was an excellent guide and looked after everyone. She had lots of arrangements to make which all went smoothly. I enjoyed the fact that we walked around the island as a journey. It might have been preferable to have the rest day earlier." Rachael

"Very enjoyable, challenging but rewarding walks and dramatic scenery made all the more enjoyable by Marian's knowledge of the language and geology of the island. Very good accommodation. Very well looked after - all arrangements worked well, i.e. booking taxis, restaurants etc." Chris and Sue

"It was fantastic and all that I had hoped for. I was concerned that, being 60 + not is as fit a condition as I'd hoped (due to an injury prior to coming) that I would find it hard to keep up. Marian made it safe and enjoyable. She did a superb job of guiding. I appreciated her geological knowledge very much and she offered it in interesting bits that were fun and not overwhelming to a non-scientist. Marian handled the groups' differing needs with great skill and was a lot of fun to be with - fine sense of humour! The walks were so beautiful. Perhaps in the info, change "walking sticks recommended" to "strongly recommended" for this one at least. I doubt I could have done it all if we hadn't found bamboo poles to use. Loved the accommodation." Frith

"Yes I really enjoyed it and will definitely book something else in future. The walking and accommodation was excellent, better than I expected. The days were a good length which I think was partly to do with Marian being a very calm and strong leader. Overall it was a brilliant week. Yes, the accommodation was excellent. Yes, Marian did a billiant job of tailoring the days to meet the needs of the whole group, which was quite varied. The walks were spectacular and built up in difficulty very well."

"Everything I hoped for and more! Very well organised. Lots of variety in the hikes each day. Challenging but with enough flexibility to meet differing needs of individuals. Fantastic scenery. All accommodations were fine. Marian was excellent. I was impressed with her ability to stay calm while being pulled in many different directions at the same time. She was sensitive to the needs of individuals. She did everything she could to help us out. She was attentive to details. I really felt I was in good hands! Definitely something I would recommend to others." Carol

"Excellent, great walking, good accommodation, great company. Excellent - perhaps stay for the non-walking day where pool was open. Very well looked after. Allowed to expand on walks and allowed to use level of knowledge but in a safe environment." Mandi

"A real blast. Intense, exhilarating, all a bit of a bur. Significant variation of walking pace in group could have spoilt the holiday for me, as it would have been frustratingly slow …. But Marian (a little angel) picked up on this early on and allowed a group of us to go ahead. I was very happy with standard of accommodation compared very favourably to Exodus holiday I went on last year but maybe some thought needs to be given as to how room sharing is sorted out - was source of tension at one point. Accommodated my restrictive dietary requirements in low key and caring way. It was important to me it didn't become a big issue on the holiday and it didn't. (I know I an awkward bugger, don't need it rubbing in.)"

"Great holiday, varied terrain and scenery which came alive with Marian's expert geology/ecology lessons en route, a very interesting island altogether. The holiday couldn't have been organised any other way but starting out when we did meant we were walking in the heat of the day often but it was exceptionally hot (forest fires etc). Very good, varied, good breakfasts etc. Especially good was Tamahuche Vallehermoso. Marian was very warm, caring, funny with ability to create a good group atmosphere. Efficient too! Exceptionally hot year but maybe March or early April better? " Jen
