------ ---Gentle Sandwich, Kent

Gentle Sandwich, Kent 16-19 Feb
with Sue B & Barbara B

16th Feb

St Crispins Inn.Everyone arrived safely at the lovely village of Wroth with its gorgeous little duckpond and pretty church.

Plaque at the Inn.

We settled into the comfortable St crispin Inn, all except three who were staying at the fabulous five star Solley Farm B & B across the road.

17th Feb

Setting off for Sandwich. We walked across fields and orchards to the edge of Sandwich.

Frosty crisp morning.

Walking to St Bartholomews.

St Bartholomews.

Inspecting St Bartholomews.

We stopped to look round the little hamlet of St Bartholomews, originally a hospital and chapel, with houses for all the staff, each with the name in stone over the door.

We walked into the town via the old town wall passing by the wonderful Edwyn Lutyens House with Gertrude Jekyll garden.

Passing the gate house.

Finally we arrived at the quay side of the old Cinque Port and had tea in a lovely cafe.

Exploring the medieval and Tudor buildings of Sandwich.

Extraordinary old windows.

The tour round the town was delightful, taking in really interesting churches, little alleyways, including Holy Ghost Alley, the mediaeval Guildhall and many charming tudor buildings.

We then followed the river out to the coast to eat lunch by the sea.

Sight of the sea.

Eating lunch near the sea.

A little coastal walking we then crossed the golf course to the Sandwich Bird Observatory, finding out that bearded tits had been spotted on the marshes.

Lunch near the sea.

Dinner at St Crispins Inn.

We crossed the marshes back to Worth and a well earned rest.

Later we ate at St Crispins Inn which also has plenty of history to its name.

18th Feb

We set off back along the path to the Bird Observatory and the sea then turning the opposite way towards Deal.

It was a long straight seaside walk, going past the fascinating Sandwich Bay Estate, very grand houses built in the middle of nowhere.

We finally arrived in Deal, a typical old seaside resort with pier, coastguard station and a very interesting Ball Tower.

After looking round Deal we met up to get the bus back to Worth.

19th Feb

Our last day we had a short walk from Sandwich station round the town wall to the River Stour and along the river as far as the Roman Fort.

Although closed we managed to sneak a look through a fence and it is one of the best preserved Roman monuments.

Nearby was also the site of an Amphitheatre, which at 18 metres high was the highest spot in the area!

Richborough Amphitheatre.

Richborough Fort.

We crossed the railway back to the river and retraced our steps to Sandwich, through the Gazen Salts Nature reserve.

This is also the spot where St Augustine landed on the English shore.

Here we saw many interesting water birds, and walked to the quay and the old toll bridge.

Sandwich windmill in the distance.

After lunch by the quayside we walked up Knightrider Street back to cross the town wall and moat to the railway station and home.

Women's Feedback

"I enjoyed meeting the other women on the holiday, sometimes chatting on the walks, and sometimes walking on my own. Solley Farmhouse was very comfortable with every need catered for. My only criticism was the fact that there was no individual control on the radiators in the bedrooms. Sometimes it was too hot and sometimes too cold. Generally well looked after by guides. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday and look forward to the next."

"I really enjoyed the walks. On the whole I was happy just to go at my own pace and there was always one of the leaders to chat to. The leaders were brilliant. Both at one time or another stayed with me and at no time did I feel as if I was holding them back. Lunch could be better. Sandwiches OK but choice of crisps etc not so good. Breakfast very good as was the service in the Inn itself. Owners welcoming and accommodating." Ellen

"I did enjoy it. Liked walking by the sea and exploring historic Sandwich. Perfect weather was a bonus. Like dropping in on the quirky bird observatory, the odd pub "The Forester" where the ancient mariner landlord revived us after walking on the shore in relentless midday sun, the old fashioned shops in Deal and the new fairy and witchy ones…. The "estate" of houses near Worth - a spooky, gated community .. slightly sinister. Spending time in this flat, open landscape has revealed many small eclectic gems! St Crispins Inn very comfortable with friendly helpful hosts. Food very good. Would have welcomed a banana in the packed lunch (for a 4 o'clock boost!). Well looked after by Sue. She and Barbara good company, attentive and not smothering."

"Very well looked after by Sue and Babara. We had fantastic weather that really maded the holiday." Gill

"Fab weather - hotel - walks!" Edy Lyngaas
