------ ---High Intermediate Grasmere

High Intermediate Grasmere
with Polly

10th Feb

Consulting the mapsWe left the other groups poring over their maps and headed out, unsure of whether the good forecast for the day would be true.

Helm Crag above a frosty Glenthorne

The days walk would take us up Helm Crag along the ridge back down Easedale valley .

Group Photo!

There was time for a quick group photo before we set off.

A photo oppertunity heading up Helm Crag

Looking towards Grasmere Common

The day was cold but the clarity of the air was superb and the view stunning.

Enjoying the winter sun!
Crossing the grassy crags on Helm Crag

Bright winter sunshine

A perfect day to clear our minds of everything and just enjoy the fresh air and good weather.

Perfect place for sandwiches

A relaxed break for lunch in the sunshine before heading down into the Easedale Valley

Plenty of well placed rocks to sit on

Time for a few photos in the shade

Women with a keen eye for a picture spotted a WW summertime bathing spot!

WW's summer jacuzzi!
Herdwick sheep are a familiar sight

Resting our feet

There was time for another quick stop, protecting our sandwiches from sheep, before crossing Far Easdale Gill at Stythwaite Steps

Some of the group carry on to Easedale Tarn

Descending into Far Easdale

The sky was a brilliant blue against the fellside.

A peaceful moment

At the end of the day I gave the group the option of a quick run up to Easedale tarn or return to Glenthorne for tea and cake. Those that took the tarn option were not unhappy.

Easdale Tarn

The tarn was stunningly still, reflecting the surrounding mountains like a mirror. We sat for a while to take in the beautiful setting.

It was a perfect end to our first day.

11th Feb

Glenthorne Guest HouseToday was another crisp frosty morning but the sunshine was bright.

Marion's group

We watched as Marian led her group off for another gruelling day pouring over compass bearings.

Grasmere

Our destination today was Fairfield and we headed up behind Dove Cottage towards Alcock Tarn.

Grasmere with Silver Howe behind

The visibility was good again today in the sunshine, with some fabulous views looking back over Grasmere.

A sunny spot at Alcock Tarn!

We made good time and stopped for a break on reaching Alcock Tarn. The walk up from Grasmere combined with the winter sun meant some women were in tee shirts!

Time for sandwiches

Taking in the winter sun

My group claimed they were determined to walk high enough to find snow today.........

Hazy Alcock Tarn and Grasmere

We were soon on the ridge towards Fairfield. The views were hazy in the winter sun and looking back we could see Grasmere and Alcock Tarn shimmering.

Fairfield ridge route

High on the ridge we had our first glimpse of snow

Fanastic views from the top

There were fabulous views across the central fells, back towards Windermere and north towards the Scottish coast.

Graceful Walking Woman!

When we found a decent patch of snow there was some impromptu sledging and a snowball fight!

Ready to throw those snow balls

There was a short scramble as started our journey home and we continued at a leisurely pace and ended up in Ambleside in time for the bus home.

A bit of a scramble

Waiting for the bus

12th Feb

Setting off from WythburnToday we set out early to get the 8.40 bus to Thirlmere. Our intended summit today was Helvellyn. The forecast was still good , and its not often you get a good day on the top of Helvellyn at this time of year.

Along the beck

Thirlmere

We quickly gained height from our starting point at Wythburn, the flanks of the Helvellyn group keeping us in a cool shadow as we climbed.

Skiddaw and Thirlmere

Soon Skiddaw was visible in the distance.

Not much farther

High on Helvellyn with Raven Crag behind

Central and Northern Fells

The clear weather gave us fantastic veiws over the central fells and even out towards the peaks over Buttermere. Central and Northern Fells

Distance Scottish Coast

As we found our first cornice of snow we saw glimpses of Bassenthwaite and the Scottish Coast.

Swirral Edge and Sheffield Pike

There were views for miles on the summit, looking down to Red Tarn in this picture...

Striding Edge and Red Tarn

...and with Striding Edge looking shadowy in this one.

Lunch Time!

The well designed cross-shaped shelter on the summit offers protection from the wind in any direction and even has a stone bench to sit on!
Time for photos

We were so lucky to have another day of clear skies and crisp views.

Doubling back along Nethermost Pike

We could not belive our luck with the weather remaing good all day,our pictures speak for themselves!St Sunday Crag

Heading down from Dollywaggon Pike, we had good views of St Sunday Crag with a glimpse of Ullswater in the distance.

Grisedale Tarn
Soon Grisedale Tarn was in sight and with all the ladies requesting a longer walk, we returned to yesterday's summit of Fairfield before returning to Grasmere. Grisdale Tarn

Grisdale Tarn

Our planned route down would have returned us back to Glenthorne in time for tea but the longer route came back down via Stone Arthur.

Ascent to Fairfield

So we made our way to Fairfield taking in our last climb of the day.

On the way back

Last few miles

The day was long and the distance slightly longer than planned but the joy of such wonderful weather in February and views of all the Lakeland mountains could not be bettered.

13th Feb

Mixed groupFor our last day the two groups of map readers and walkers mixed up and I led a group up to Alcock Tarn.

Plenty of time for breaks today

Soaking up the sun

The weather was fantastic and we sat for quite a long time eating our sandwiches and soaking up the February sunshine.

By Alcock Tarn

My group prepared themselves for the journey home.

Just taking in those last views - remembering them for always as a fantastic February break in the lakes!

Women's Feedback

"Enjoyed it, easy to get to via public transportation. Great group of women. Wednesday after hike no water in shower but they fixed it so I was able to shower. Good choice of walks by guide"

"This was my third stay at Glenthorne with WW; however, all the walks were new to me which was good. The excellent weather enabled us to have long days on the hills - very much appreciated. No problems with accommodation. Polly gave us options and she looked after us. She was keen to take advantage of the weather so gave us long walks with great ascents". Bev

"Excellent - very enjoyable. People (guides and fellow walkers) were friendly. Excellent accommodation".

"Tremendous wlks with 'wow' views. Great company, amazing weather. Good food, well planned. Accommodation was comfortable and Glenthorne is a very peaceful place. Choice of walks was good, building up to a spectacular day. All walks were round on great paths. Always felt supported when necessary". Jeanette

"Fantastic - Polly really excellent leader. Challenged me to go further than I thought and I did get an enormous sense of achievement. Really enjoyed the holiday". Jane

"Yes, especially because the weather was glorious! And good to be a bit stretched, especially Helvellyn and Fairfield on the Tuesday. Happy with accommodation - would have loved to have a room with a view though. Felt well looked after by guide on the whole". Andrea
