------ ---Low Int South Downs

Low Intermediate South Downs 21-24 March
with Lorraine

21st March

Everyone arrived and settled into their rooms at the Horse & Groom during the afternoon and we all met in the bar when it opened at 6pm. We talked about the walks for the weekend and got to know each other over dinner.

22nd March

As predicted the weather did not look very welcoming, with strong gusty winds and showers during breakfast.

Undaunted we set out in our wet weather gear and headed down the lane towards West Stoke.

We soon turned off the road and walked through open country along a pleasant stoney track to Kingley Vale nature reserve where we spent a few minutes reading the information in the little field museum.

Ancient yews in Kingley Vale.

We then started walking through the yew forest, the largest surviving yew forest in the world with trees possibly as old as 2000 years old.

Walking through the yew forest.

They were amazing to look at, with huge lower branches touching the ground.

Incredibly ancient yews.

Heading up onto the Downs.

Following the nature trail we came out into a large clearing of typical Sussex Downland and continued on a path that eventually climbed steeply up Bow Hill.

View over Chichester from Bow Hill.

The views over Chichester and Hayling Island at the top were ample compensation for our efforts; we could even see the Isle of Wight.

Enjoying the view from Bow Hill.

After a short rest we walked past a group of bronze age burial mounds and along a muddy track along the ridge of Bow Hill.

A short break.

We then made our way down to the village below. At one point we had hail stones, then rain and then the sun came out just as we made our way in to Stoughton and the village pub which does teas and coffees.

At the tea room in Stoughton.

We were able to sit outside and enjoy our lunch in the sunshine.

That afternoon we had more rain, interspersed with sunny spells.

Leaving Stoughton.

Glorious daffodills.

Forest after Walderton.

After passing through Walderton we walked steadily up through the forest and again had wonderful views of the coast across Walderton Down.

A further break was taken in brilliant sunshine, followed by light snow!

A break in the sunshine.

As we made our way downhill back towards West Stoke, one of our group slipped and turned her ankle.

A drink in the bar at the Horse & Groom.

First aid was administered and she was helped back along a lane to where a car was brought to her.

Later we met in the bar and then had delicious meals in the restaurant where we were staying.

23rd March

This morning the weather seemed to have worsened! After a short drive to Bosham, we set off along the picturesque quayside in driving rain.

However it soon lightened and we followed a series of paths across fields, along pretty lanes and then walked beside the waters of Fishbourne Channel along the floodwall.

We made our way through the reeds at the end, along a series of boardwalks and bridges until we reached a pretty millpond at Fishbourne.

Ducks on a thatched roof.

We were greeted by the many ducks and swans on the pond, and even spotted some ducks sitting on the thatched roof of a nearby cottage.

After a short break we set off towards Dell Quay, walking through a couple of fields and along the eastern shoreline of Fishbourne Channel until we reached the Crown and Anchor pub at Dell Quay.

Walking beside Fishbourne Channel.

View across the estuary.

Winding up after dinner.

With our very muddy boots and our packed lunches, the landlord happily agreed to our sitting outside and brought us hot refreshments.

View from the Crown & Anchor.

Once again, the sun started to shine and a few mini easter eggs were also passed around!

By the time we left it was quite sunny and we visited the pretty little church in Apuldram.

Walking back to Fishbourne.

We rejoined the waterside footpath back to Fishbourne, enjoying the improvement in the weather, and views towards Chichester and the cathedral.

Walking back to Bosham.

Sunshine on the way back to Bosham.

Walking beside the water.

We then took a different route along footpaths back to Bosham.

Walking back to Bosham.

There we changed out of our muddy boots at our cars - walked back to a lovely tearoom overlooking the harbour and had gorgeous cream teas and cakes.

At the tea room.

Gorgeous cream tea.

That evening we were not able to eat where we staying as it was a Sunday.

Instead we went to a pub a mile down the road and had a great meal there.

24th March

Breakfast at the Horse & Groom. Our last day involved a half day's walk and a few of the group decided to visit Chichester instead.

Setting off up St Roches Hill.

After breakfast the rest of us drove a short distance to East Lavant and set off up a wide chalky track to the top of St Roches Hill.

On St Roches Hill.

Once again, we had lovely views.

Walking to the ancient hill fort.

We walked to the south of the top of the hill and then cut back on to the ancient hill fort at the top, with views over Goodwood race course.

At the hill fort.

On Hayes Down.

After an early lunch stop, we walked in the chilly wind along Haye's Down.

Walking back to East Lavant.

Returning turned south along the valley, we eventually join the stream and arrived back at East Lavant.

Women's Feedback

"Enjoyable. Met my expectations. Yes overall happy. Not all uphill - some flatter - catered for all abilities."

"I had no expectations as my 1st holiday of this kind. Excellent room en-suite, very warm and comfy. Bathroom good. A bit hit and miss with the shower and warm water. Maybe not mastered the dial, or at end of a run on hot water. Lorraine an excellent calm, very organised guide. I established confidence for a first timer. I thoroughly enjoyed the Saturday walk. All views, bogs, mire, snow and above all the sit, rest, lunch overlooking a wide landscape." Christine.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my very first walking holiday. It was all that I expected it to be. There were not any problems with the holiday at all. The only problem I had was to fall over and twist my ankle which stopped me walking on the second day, although I intend walking today (Monday). The accommodation was very good. The food was excellent, especially the breakfasts. I felt very well looked after by Lorraine, especially when she tended my ankle which I though she handled in a very professional way." Marilyn

"Enjoyable holiday, good mix of walks, and amazingly guide arranged for rain to stop when we ate our lunch and for pub owners to be OK with us eating in their outdoor areas, using loos etc. Very well managed! Food at Horse and Groom good (huge and delicious breakfasts) and other local pub also very acceptable on 3rd night. Beautiful views from tops, lots of wild flowers. Yew Tree forest spectacular. Bosham pretty, also liked Fishbourne. Yes it was fine, apart from poor tea bags in room. Heating good which was appreciated given cold weather, also meant could dry waterproof trousers etc. overnight. Very well looked after by guide, dealt calmly with someone's injury, good at making everyone feel included and comfortable. Lorraine is an excellent guide and inspires confidence, also very pleasant company and good sense of humour." Kate

"This is my second WW holiday and I have enjoyed this one even more. First walk excellent and we have been fortunate with the weather. Second walk good although a bit flat. Comfortable and good home cooking. Lorraine was excellent, considerate of everyone's needs and ability. " Suzanna

"I've had a really good Easter weekend. It was exactly what I expected. The accommodation was of a very high standard. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Food generous and good quality. Lorraine was thoughtful pro-active and dealt with any difficulties with ease and diplomacy."

"Really enjoyed the holiday - first time with WalkingWomen - will book another. No problems although as previously mentioned not happy about using own car. Accommodation very good. Lorraine is a very attentive guide who made sure everyone in the group was OK and gave good advice. Sorted out an emergency situation calmly and efficiently" Ruth

"Excellent. Excellent food but packed lunches poor. Prefer a place with drying facilities. Excellent guide - wonderful at dealing with sprained ankle of a walker. Many thanks!" Jan

"Yes, very enjoyable. Yes, very comfortable. Bit disappointed restaurant/bar closed on day of arrival between 3 - 6pm & on Sunday evening. Yes the guide was very good."

"First time I have been on Low Intermediate break as I have always been on gentle walks in past and was a bit wary but I really enjoyed it and managed the extra miles well. Bit disappointing at end as could not come back into the inn to change. The room and food was excellent. I missed not having a lounge to social in (I don't really like pubs and it closed between 3 and 6 p.m). Also missed having a separate drying room and outside tap. Lorraine catered for our every need. Excellent choice of walks and very helpful if we found anything difficult". Joan

"First day walking, wonderful. 2nd day flatter - fields with harbour view nice, would have preferred more variety. Nice people, nice pub, wonderful food. Well organised. Overall yes. Room was clean and pleasant and plenty of hot water. Lorraine's calm approach to the person who injured themselves was very reassuring. "
