------ ---Intermediate Peak District

Intermediate Peak District 24-28 May
with Yvonne

24th May

Losehill Hall, near Castleton.First evening Everyone arrived safely and ate the first of several huge Losehill Hall dinners (Yvonne had warned about the sweet trolley and pacing yourself).

Some needed a walk down to the village to help it settle and witnessed some 'interesting' sheep worrying by a horse.....

25th May

On the Pennine Way from Edale. (Margot Sargent)Ros and Margot kindly agreed to drive us to Edale, from where we walked back to the Hall.

We followed the Pennine Way to Barber Booth and took the gradual climb to Hollins Cross.

It was too windy to walk along the ridge to Lose Hill, so we dropped off under Mam Tor to walk around the head of the valley and back to Castleton via the caverns.

Some took the opportunity to visit Speedwell, whilst others checked out tea shops in the village or went home to read.

A good day for spring flowers as we added lousewort, miltwort, tormentil and woundwort to our list. Another evening constitutional to help dinner settle.

26th May

View across the valley. (Margot Sargent)Another windy day but we decided to go for Win Hill.

First lunch in the National Trust shelter at Edale End and then we saw a hare on the way up to Hope Cross.

The forest and wall sheltered us from the 40mph winds.

We judged it safe (and exhilarating) to continue to the summit after 2nd lunch behind a wall with great views down the valley.

Home by bus for those with weary legs whilst the rest of us walked back over the fields.

A good day for bluebells and violets, red campion and stichwort in the hedgerows.

27th May

View out of the window in the morning.A late start as we waited for the 10 o'clock bus, though there were no complaints as we watched the rain sweep across the Losehill Hall lawn.

Bradwell village. (Margot Sargent)

From Bradwell village there's a short but steep climb up onto Bradwell Edge and then good tracks and paths around the open moor.

A light drizzle for most of the day made us damp, but birds on the river (dipper and goosander) brightened our walk.

 (Margot Sargent)

Again the choice in Hope of coffee and the bus home, or walking back a different way from yesterday.

 (Margot Sargent)

One group went out to Hathersage gear shopping and came home with bargains.

28th May

Setting off from Losehill.Up from the Hall to Hollins Cross and along to Mam Tor, the highest point of the week.

 (Margot Sargent)

No wind today, but thick mist instead. Hedgerow flowers today included water avens and bedstraws.

We were back to the Hall by 2 pm as promised - with time for plenty of goodbyes before our journeys home!
