------ ---Intermediate Snowdonia

Intermediate Snowdonia 2-5 May
with Anita

2nd May

In spite of the terrible forecast we were generally blessed.

The Friday evening was the start of the warmer weather with some of the women enjoying an evening walk, and most basking in the evening sun over a drink on the benches outside the Heights Hotel.

3rd May

Setting off from Llanberis. Saturday looked promising, and we took in the waterfalls over the village before making our way up the col.

Enjoying the waterfalls.

Lots of water in the waterfalls.

Overlooking for

The wind started to pick up and, as 2 of our group were new to hill walking, we had a short conflab before making the decision to climb Moel Cynghorion.

Heading up to Moel Cynghorion.

The views opened up and the wind started to drop.

Dropping down to Rhyd Ddu.

By the time we had dropped down towards Rhyd Ddu, we were starting to strip off and slap on the sub-block.

Stripping off!

Both beer gardens and tea shop were sampled, making the stroll along the road to the hostel more pleasant.

In the beer garden.

Dog at the pub.

At Snowdon Ranger hostel.

We were all pleasantly surprised by the exceptional standard of food and hospitality at the Snowdon Ranger Hostel, as well as the excellent range of local ale.

This enhanced the table football performance of some more than others, but eventually we decided we should let the children take over the games room!

4th May

Waiting to set off.Sunday was looking like being a wet one as we made our way up the South flank of Mynydd Mawr.

Anita clowning!

Wet weather outfits were discussed in some depth and our novice hill walker/keen golfer was generally hailed as the trendsetter for the group.

Setting off up Mynydd Mawr.

Rescue remedy for the weather!

The weather started to close in on us, Rescue Remedy was administered!

...or something stronger.

In the group shelter for lunch.

In the group shelter for lunch.

By the time we reached Foel-Rudd, the group shelter was out for our lunch stop.

The rain stopped after lunch.

Miraculously, as soon as we got out of the shelter, the rain stopped, just long enough for us to make the summit before it set in properly for the rest of the day.

Nearing the summit.

The final descent through the forest towards Betws-Garmon was pretty slippery, and all waterproofs, golfing or otherwise, were tested to the limit. (Sorry no photos).

On the summit of Mynydd Mawr.

After a brief scout at Plas-y-Nant to arrange afternoon teas, some decided to head straight back to the hot showers and drying rooms, while the rest of us dripped all over the floors with the proprietor non-plussed.

Dripping while waiting for the train.

We were waiting for the steam train, which passes by the Hostel only a few times a day.

Waiting for the steam train.

So when the time was right, we could flag it down and travel home in style, albeit just to the next stop.

The steam train arrives.

There was a real sense of occasion - of stopping the train to let the ladies on.

In the steam train.

The staff work on a voluntary basis, and you can tell that they love what they do.

Getting off at the next stop.

Playing jenga.

Our last evening at the hostel was fairly raucous but short-lived, as we were all pretty tired.

Jenga!

Everyone tried the hat.

Also 3 of our party, sadly, had to leave early the next day - and we'd arranged an early taxi for them to get back to Llanberis.

5th May

Fab fab last day - and we were over there yesterday! The taxi bus came early to pick up our luggage and most of our wet gear had dried.

Llyn Cwellyn

Llyn Cwellyn

The weather was stunning, and so still that there were perfect reflections in Llyn Cwellyn in front of the hostel.

Llyn Cwellyn

We took it nice and easy up the Snowdon Ranger Path and the weather got better and better as we made our way along the fine ridge to Moel Eilio.

Setting off for Moel Eilio.

Looking back to Llyn Cwellyn

Fabulous views.

The views opened up across to Cardigan Bay to the West and over the whole of the Snowdonia range.

A break to take in the view.

What a setting for photos.

Nearing the saddle.

On Moel Eilio.

Fantastic views and visibility.

It was an inspirational finale which we savoured for as long as possible, before making our way back down to the flesh pots of Llanberis!

Women's Feedback

"Extremely enjoyable holiday in a beautiful area. Three good well balanced days of walking. Snowdon Ranger Hostel great, well organised, beds creak as always, showers hot, staff great, all sorted in a timely way. Heights Hotel another planet! Anita has outstanding ability at leading walks and leading a group. She was able to allow and even encourage fun, freedom, independence and safety. A true "cultural architect". Nina

"Just a quick note to thank you for a great weekend with walking women. Anita (our guide) did a brill job and was very considerate and friendly. I will be booking again at some point once I have recovered from my stiff legs." Debbie

"Anita was a sensitive, informed and light hearted leader that i felt completely safe with, the walks were just wonderful and everyone was able to go at their own pace, with lots of sits to absorb the sun and the views!, and the group were all very pleasant and friendly. We all seemed to look after each other, which was lovely. Food at the two places was very good, particularly the YHA. it would have been nice to swim in a tarn, but water a little icy!" Grace

"It was great. Anita was brilliant and helped the group to coincide in such a way that everyone seemed to have a good time and feel included whatever their ability. Heights wasn't great. Snowdon Ranger was fine. The food was excellent. Excellent walks. She was really brilliant and made everyone feel good about themselves. I had a really good time and thanks." Cosis

"What a great break - loved it - Snowdonia is fabulous. Heights Hotel a bit grim and I wouldn't choose to stay there unless I was with a group. Snowdon Range YH excellent. Anita was brilliant. Highly recommend this long weekend."

"Fab! Great guide - she knew the mountains and walks well and was a lot of fun too. She was great! Found us an unexpected tea shop on a v wet afternoon and we even finished that day with a short fun trip on the steam train. Lovely group of women. It felt like we'd been away for longer than 3 days. Could have happily have stayed longer. Thank you WW." Bonny

"Very enjoyable - coped better than I though. Very well guided, lots of fun and laughter and occasional sulks. Good variety of less well known walks. Heights a little noisy but very clean. The hard beds at Snowdon Ranger were more than compensated for by the atmosphere and really tremendous food. Excellent guide." Di

"Fouond it absolutely lovely. Totally relaxing. I feel have discovered Snowdonia - Anita knew so much about it all. So glad I came. Heights was bit noisy but bed very comfy. Food fine. Snowdon Ranger lovely, super food, wonderful spot. Excellent guide. Thank you Anita. Lovely relaxed atmosphere socially. Looked after everyone very well. " Grace

"My first experience with WW and it was excellent. People friendly. Anita was very caring and considerate. We all fitted in well and laughed. Food was well planned and substantial. GREAT. A new experience for me which I hope to repeat. Excellent. Hopefully the beginning of a new life for me." Elaine
