19-26 Jul - Gran Paradiso,
Italy |
| Int & High Alpine - Anita & Madeline
-hotel & refuges |
|
| 7 nights full board &
everything except flight: £535 |
A favourite trek into Italy's Gran
Paradiso National Park in the Western Alps, staying in a small hotel, then
refuges, with a choice of intermediate and high level walks each day (you carry
a day pack only!)
Fuller detail
An opportunity to spend a week in the splendour of the
Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy's Western Alps - with breathtaking views
all around, alpine flowers, marmots, ibex and chamoix! There will be 2 guides
to offer an Intermediate and a High Alpine choice each day (walking with a day
pack only - your luggage is transported for you). We start from Albergo Gran
Paradiso, Noasca, in the Valle del Orca, making our way over 2 days past
beautiful lakes to Col del Nivolet and spending a night on the way at valley
refuge Le Fonti. At Col del Nivolet we stop for 3 nights at Rifugio Citta di
Chivasso which is perched spectacularly above the lakes of Piano del Nivolet
and a whole new alpine valley. This wonderful traditional refuge has dormitory
beds, cold water washing, and excellent food in true Italian style. Here there
are walks at both levels, with stunning views of glaciers and distant ranges
including Gran Paradiso itself, or less rugged paths through flower filled
Piano del Nivolet. On the 5th day we return to Rifugio Le Fonti via an old
royal game trail - perhaps the best day of all, then back past quaint deserted
villages with frescoes to Noasca for our last night. The high walks are 'High
Alpine' on 2 days when there is more descent than usual.
The 3 nights of high refuge
life are a wonderful experience, but resources at altitude are limited, and
taking account of this is a necessary part of the holiday: use water sparingly,
hand wash rather than shower; solar power only - no power sockets available;
bottled drinking water.

Some of the most exciting walking in
the Lake District! This holiday offers a choice of intermediate and slow high

how you feel. 'Slow High' walks are high level walks taken at a slower pace.
The holiday is based at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale - a
lovely old building with charm and character located beneath the Langdale
Pikes. From here we will have Lingmoor Fell, Pike O'Blisco, Crinkle Crags and
Bow Fell right on our doorstep. The Coniston Fells will also be within reach,
and of course, the shapely Langdale Pikes with magnificent views from their
rocky tops will be a 'must' for both groups. The ODG offers a good mix of
shared and single rooms, some of which are ensuite while others are standard
with a washbasin and a bathroom nearby. The inn has a popular Hikers Bar which
we can enjoy after our walks, and dinner will be served in the dining room at

offering a choice of gentle or intermediate walks from Grasmere. You choose

Fuller detail
Grasmere is one of the most
central yet easily reached villages in the Lake District - with stunning

centre, with wonderful views in three directions, comfortable bedrooms, and
excellent food! From here there are wonderful walks to explore - plenty for 5
days, and you can choose which grade suits you best - or change grade if
needed. For Gentle walks we might start with the lovely walk beside Grasmere
and Rydal Water, returning via Rydal Cave and Loughrigg Terrace for its
stunning view over the lake. The wooded bridle path to Rydal village is also
delightful, and we might stop at White Moss Common - or Rydal Hall for tea
beside its tumbling beck. We can walk to beautiful Loughrigg Tarn (a small
lake), or climb the path beside Sour Milk Gill waterfall to Easedale Tarn in
the hills. On other days there are woodland paths where we might see deer or
hear woodpeckers, the wild valley of Far Easedale for a secluded dip, or the
stunning views from higher Dow Bank. For Intermediate walks we can explore the
several wonderful ridges of the area - Helm Crag, Blea Rigg, Steel Fell &
Heron Pike - all with breathtaking views. And of course the distictive Langdale
Pikes will easily accessible with a short drive into the next valley.

Intermediate & High Intermediate grades explained...
Intermediate - 8
miles, average 650m up & down
Do you love wonderful views
and don't mind the uphill effort to reach them? Intermediate holidays offer 6-8
mile walks on the mid-range hills, selecting those that will give the most
exciting views and most interesting walking. There is more 'up' and 'down'
involved than in the lower level grades: up to 750m (2500ft) of ascent, or
1-1.5 hours of walking uphill at a relaxed pace with stops to catch our breath.
The effort is rewarded by the satisfaction of just 'getting there', the
stunning views all around, and the general lack of people. Often there is then
a flatter ridge walk to follow with great views on each side before we descend.
If you're not
already familiar with these pleasures, this might be a chance to discover them
in good company. Intermediate paths vary more than on lower walks, being more
uneven, rockier, and sometimes steep or boggy in places. Our pace will be
easygoing and anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who doesn't mind hills
will be fine. For example, you might regularly walk 5 miles and feel you could
happily do more; or you might do some other form of regular exercise like
cycling, aerobics, or running.
High Intermediate
- 9 miles, average 800m up & down
Are you a high level walker and feel you've lost
fitness over the wiAre you a high level walker and feel you've lost fitness
over the winter? Or do you already love intermediate walks and want to go
higher? High Intermediate walks are stunning walks at the top end of the
Intermediate range, verging towards High Level: they more regularly involve
800m (2600ft) of ascent and descent and up to 9 miles in length. Some sections
will be as steep and rocky as High Level paths - particularly in the Lake
District - offering you an introduction to this kind of terrain.
This grade also
suits holidays where some of the days are longer than the Intermediate grade
even though the terrain is straightforward; and in winter you will find High
Intermediate holidays when short days and the threat of ice on the highest tops
prevent us offering the highest grades. If you are new to hill walking yet are
confident about your fitness, this grade (and 'Slow
High') may be best for your first venture into the mountains.
