Long Distance footpaths in 2008....

Long Distance footpaths: Wonderful walks offering long days of 10-15 miles - or sometimes longer. See each holiday description for details of its average length of day and average ascent/descent. You can read more about our Long Distance grade below.

9-17 May - Long Distance West Highland Way Full
Inns, hotels, & 1 special bunkhouse - Sue M - Scotland
9 nights part board, all luggage trans + return travel: £615

A chance to walk the famous West Highland Way - one of the most spectacular long distance paths in the UK.

Fuller detail
Loch Lomond with the Highlands beyond. The West Highland Way is one of the most breathtaking long distance paths, following ancient trails steeped in history through some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain, from the Scottish lowlands near Glasgow to Fort William near the foot of Ben Nevis in the Highlands. There'll be bluebells on the shores of Loch Lomond, dramatic waterfalls in Glen Falloch, the bleak expanses of Rannoch Moor, and the dramatic Highland scenery of Glencoe and Lairigmor. We start from Drymen, missing out the first road walking section from Glasgow. From Drymen it is 83 glorious miles to Fort William, averaging 12 miles and 340m of ascent a day over 7 walking days. On the way we stay mostly in B&Bs, old coaching inns, and small hotels, with one night exclusive use of a beautifully converted and catered railway station bunkhouse at Bridge of Orchy. Guided by Sue M. (Evening meals are not included - from £15). (NB. Dates in Spring Brochure are incorrect).

24-29 May - Pembrokeshire Coast Path - Part 2 Full
Youth Hostels - Long Distance - Marian - Wales
Full board & all luggage transport: £350

This 2nd quarter of the Pembrokeshire Coast path is probably the most challenging but also the most spectacular! (Was called Part 1 in 2007).

Fuller detail
Challenging but also spectacular!Pembrokeshire is blessed with some of the finest coastal scenery in the country - possessing a highly indented coastline where wild sea cliffs form a sanctuary for birds, and little coves enclose quaint harbours or stretches of sandy beach. Missing out the section past Milford Haven refinery, this second Pembrokeshire holiday covers the section of coast path from Dale Point to Whitesands Bay near St Davids. It is probably also the most spectacular and at the same time the most demanding section of the Path - with days of 8-13 miles in length, and plenty of descents and ascents as you dip down to the sea at each cove, then ascend to the next cliffs again. The holiday starts at Dale Fort Field Centre which has a superb position on Dale Point overlooking the sea. Women loved it in 2007! Here we stay for 2 nights as we cover the first two days from Dale to Marloes Sands, and from Marloes Sands to Broad Haven. At Broad Haven we stay at the youth hostel for 2 nights while we walk the next two legs of the Path - from Broad Haven to Solva, and from Solva to Whitesands. Our last night is spent in the tiny city of St Davids at the relaxed Twr y felin Hotel close to the centre, allowing us a last meal out on the town to celebrate (last evening meal not included - from £12). On the final morning, if your travel plans allow, there will be time to visit St Davids Cathedral, walk on St Davids Head, or maybe even visit Ramsay Island - an RSPB nature reserve accessible by ferry. Your luggage is transported for you between accommodations, and transport is included to/from the walks where needed. You can reach Dale by coastal Puffin Bus from either Haverfordwest or Milford Haven stations, and from St Davids there is a direct bus service back to Haverfordwest. (Part 1 of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is in April; Part 3 will be later in the year; and we hope to offer Part 4 in 2009).

29 Jul-13 Aug - Long Distance Coast to Coast
Hostels & inns/B&Bs - Diane P - West to East coast
15 nights part board (incl. 5 evening meals) + all luggage: £1065

The Cumbria Way is a long distance footpath through the scenic heart of the Lake District walking at relatively low level… Luggage is transported for you - you carry only a day pack.

Fuller detail
View from High Street - day 5.A new holiday for WalkingWomen in 2008, the Coast to Coast walk was devised by Wainwright to link the Irish Sea and the North Sea. It is a route rather than an official long distance path, walking 190 miles from St Bees Head through the Lake District, and across the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, and North York Moors to Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast. It is one of Britain's most popular long distance walks and undoubtedly includes some of the finest upland scenery in England. On this holiday with Diane P and Sylvia we will complete the walk in 14 days, with daily distances ranging from 8 miles on two of the higher Lake District days to 19 miles as we near the end of our journey (average: 14 miles a day). The amount of daily ascent is greatest at the beginning - ranging from 550m-750m a day as we traverse the Lakeland fells and Pennines, then increasing again briefly as we cross the North York Moors to reaching Robin Hood's Bay with a great sense of achievement! 5 of the nights are spent in youth hostel dormitories and include evening meals. The other 10 are spent in 2-4 bedded rooms in small hotels and B&Bs where evening meals are not included (from £12). Packed lunches and luggage transport are included throughout - you carry a day sack only. This holiday is best reached by public transport - see below.

Travel - nearest train station: St Bees station at the start, & Scarborough station at the finish (or Whitby station if you're travelling northwards). This trip is definitely best reached by train. If you come by car, it will cost you up to £150 to get back to your car from the finish unless there are other car drivers sharing the lift.
Transport to Scarborough train station at the end of the trip is included in the price of the holiday.

29 Aug-3 Sep - Pembrokeshire CP - Part 3
B&B/hotel & hostel - Marian - Long Distance
5 nights full board (ex. 2 eve. meals): £400

The final Pems CP holiday of the year - from Goodwick to St Davids - superb long distance walking, fabulous coastal views, plenty of ups & downs! (Luggage is transported for you - you carry only a day pack).

Fuller detail
The cliffs near Abereiddi. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is too long for most people to manage as one holiday, so here is another wonderful bite-sized portion walking southwest from Goodwick to Whitesands Bay near St Davids. It includes the fabulous wild sea cliffs of Strumble Head as well as easier stretches where lower cliffs and rocky shore give way to tiny harbours and sandy bays. The high cliffs then return as we round St Davids Head till finally we find ourselves looking down on Whitesands Bay and Ramsay Island offshore. In total the holiday covers 30 miles, with between 7-10 miles a day, and 'up's and 'downs' of 270m - 450m a day. You only carry a daypack as your luggage is transported for you when needed. The holiday starts with 2 nights in Goodwick at comfortable Ivybridge G/H (in ensuite twins & singles) while we walk from Goodwick to Pwll Deri, then Pwll Deri to Aber Draw. At Aber Draw we stay at Caerhafod Lodge (in 4-bedded ensuite bunk rooms), strolling down to the sea to eat out in the evening. The last 2 nights are then at the Eco Hotel in St Davids in a mix of ensuite & standard twins and singles. 2 nights here will give us time to visit this lovely little cathedral city and to eat out one evening. On the last morning, we could visit Ramsay Island one mile off the coast if there is time before your return travel. Ramsay is an RSPB nature reserve where hundreds of Guillemots, Razorbills, and Kittiwakes nest on its spectacular high cliffs, grey seals give birth to their pups in September, and we may see porpoises swimming offshore. (Cost £16 - not included as it depends on weather conditions). Goodwick can be reached by train, and there is a frequent bus service from St Davids to Haverfordwest mainline station for the return.

Long Distance - Small hotel & Eco hostel singles - Lorraine
5 nights part board (+ 1 eve meal): £390

This is the wilder 2nd half of the South Down's Way from Steyning to its finish in Winchester. (Day pack only throughout).

Fuller detail
Walking the South Downs Way.This second half of the South Downs Way follows the crest of the Downs from the Saxon village of Steyning through increasingly wild and isolated stretches to the culmination of the Downs near Winchester. Along the way there are superb views to enjoy, and many fascinating historical landmarks, from ancient beacons and a lost medieval village, to the hill where the first semaphore messages were sent in the Napoleonic Wars. For the first 3 nights we stay in ensuite twins or singles at the Arundel Park Hotel close to the station in Arundel - making it easy to come by train. For the last 2 nights we all sleep in standard singles at friendly Wetherdown hostel located right on the Way. There will be transport to walks where needed. The average distance is 12 miles a day (longest day is 15 miles). Long Distance grade explained...

Long Distance- 10-15 miles, average 400m up/down

Long distance footpaths.Long distance footpaths offer wonderful long days following ancient footpaths and bridleways steeped in history - old drovers roads or trails used by travelling folk. As such they often follow valleys or ridges to minimise the 'up' and 'down' involved, tending to aim for the next saddle rather than the next peak. They generally involve between 10-15 miles a day, with only a little more height gain than Low Intermediate walks. (Long distance coastal paths tend to have more 'ups' and 'downs' adding up to nearer 500m on some days - i.e. like a longer version of Intermediate walks). We tell you the average distance and ascent in each of their holiday descriptions. They are all fabulous journeys that will reward you with a great sense of achievement.

Their main requirement is stamina and staying power - and boots that are comfortable! Try and fit in some 10 mile walks beforehand as preparation.

Grades that stay a relatively low level.
