Fuller detail
Learning to use a map and compass to find your way safely.Have you ever wished for more confident map reading skills? Here is a holiday that will give you the skills to keep you safe in the hills - and what could be more fun than to learn them with other women. On these 2 holidays there will be 2 guides to cater for different levels of map reading experience. One group will start from basics with Gentle walks and work up to using compasses - leaving with a secure sense of how to find your way using a walking map, and how to find out where you are (and where you're going!) by using map and compass together. The other group will start with a compass refresher, then go on to apply compass techniques in more advance situations on Low Intermediate walks - great if you've done Maps & Compasses before and want to remind yourself of what you know and take it further. These holidays Look we must be here because...are based at High Trenhouse in the Yorkshire Dales near Malham Tarn with plenty of tricky moorland and limestone features to practice on right on your doorstep. Low Intermediate - Summer 2010

Low Intermediate grade explained...

Low Intermediate - 8 miles, average 350m up/down

A low intermedate walk past Blea Tarn near the Langdale Pikes.Low Intermediate walks are lovely walks of up to 8 miles that don't go much higher than gentle walks: to a maximum ascent of 450m (or 1500ft) and often less than this. The paths may be rockier in places than on gentle walks, and steeper for short distances. The pace will tend to be a little steadier as we've further to go, but still with plenty of stops along the way. You may be walking up a striking gorge in Slovenia, exploring the length of a Lake District valley, or getting away from it all in Northumberland. This grade is perfect if you love longer low walks / or if you're new to walking but already do some other form of exercise fairly regularly e.g. bike rides or aerobics.

Grades that stay a relatively low level.
