3-8 Jun - Gentle Pembrokeshire
Small Hotel - Madeline - Wales
5 nights full board (ex 1 meal): £425

Another new holiday - enjoying beautiful gentle walks in Pembrokeshire with sea views and wild flowers to die for!

Fuller detail
Whitesands Bay near St Davids. The beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline is blessed with a mild climate due to the proximity of the gulf stream. In spring and early summer its clifftops are ablaze with wild flowers, while colonies of sea birds nest along its cliffs, and seals, porpoises and dolphins can sometimes be spotted swimming off shore. The area is perfect for gentle natural history walks from the tiny cathedral city of St Davids - across the fields and down winding lanes towards the sea, or taking the coastal shuttle bus to reach other lovely walks a short distance away. From St Justinians we can reach the RSPB reserve on Ramsey Island by ferry, and on other days we may finish at a white sandy beach, or take our lunch enjoying a spectacular view from the cliffs. This 5 night holiday with Madeline will be based at the friendly Eco Hotel in St Davids, much enjoyed by previous WW groups. Here everyone can have a single room, and only the ensuite singles carry a supplement (Ensuite single supplement £5 a night). On 4 evenings we will have a good home-cooked meal at the hotel, while on one evening we'll go out to eat at one of St Davids small restaurants (not included - from £12.00). St Davids can be reached by car, or by regular bus from Haverfordwest station.

6-13 Jun - Low Int & Int Bohinj, Slovenia
Pension - Diana & Lorraine - Julian Alps
7 nights full board (excl flight & 3 eve. meals) : £505

This holiday offers a choice of walks each day based near beautiful Bohinj Lake in the Julian Alps - all in ensuite single rooms.

Fuller detail
Looking towards Triglav. This lovely holiday is based near Lake Bohinj in the Julian Alps and offers a rich choice of Low Intermediate and Intermediate walks from our base at friendly Penzion Bohinj. There are wonderful low walks beside the lake and through the Bohinj valley with its low hills and hay meadows full of flowers. Here the Bohinj River flows emerald with snowmelt, while one of its tributaries has carved a dramatic limestone gorge that we can walk through. Higher up, there are beautiful hillside pastures and more waterfalls, refuges, and views of the Julian Alps to tempt us beyond the Vogel cable car. On one day we will visit Bled for a choice of two more gorge walks, and a chance to sit in cafes by this other jewel of a lake. Penzion Bohinj is situated beside the Mostnica River in Stara Fuzina - a quiet traditional village near the foot of the lake, and we have reserved all the rooms so that everyone can have a single! The rooms are not large and are simply furnished in a clean modern style, each with a small shower room. Downstairs is the large dining room that opens onto the garden, and we'll eat here on 4 nights - simple but tasty home-cooked meals, going out to eat on the remaining 3 nights (restaurant meals not included - from £10).

10-19 Jun - High Alpine Atlas Mountains
Hotel & tents - Fran & local Berber guide - Morocco
9 nights part board + all transport ex. flight: £670

A fabulous and challenging trek to the summit of Jebel M'goun in the Central High Atlas mountains of Morocco.

Fuller detail
On Jebel Mgoun. This superb trek in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco takes us to the summit of Jebel M'goun in the M'goun Massif. Fractionally lower than better known Toubkal, it is the more scenic and less frequented of the two, and promises a wilderness experience that is definitely high alpine in grade (involving ascents and descents of 1200 to 1500m on 3 days). After a first night at Hotel Assia in Marrakech, we will drive to the lovely valley of Ait Bouguemez, staying the night in an auberge at Agouti (1760m) and taking our last shower for 4 nights! From here mules will carry our tents and gear as we make a circuit into the Central High Atlas, taking 3.5 days to get to the summit of Jebel M'goun, and 1.5 days to get back. The scenery will be magnificent and hugely varied - terraced green valleys, traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, strange colours and rock shapes in the Karstic landscape, and breathtaking panoramas from the high cols - Col du Roughelt (2860m) and Col de Targdit (3200m) - as we make our way to our last camp before the summit (2900m). The ascent of Jebel Mgoun is non-technical but will involve an early start and 1200m of ascent in the thin air till finally we are rewarded at the summit (4068m) with a literally breathtaking panorama over the whole Central High Atlas. From here we return to our previous camp, then cross the Oumskiyk Pass the next day to regain Ait Bouguemez, enjoying a well-deserved hot shower at a lovely auberge in the valley before we return to Marrakech. We now have 2 last nights at friendly Hotel Lena close to the centre of Marrakech, seeing the sights, visiting a few last souks, enjoying the small hotel pool, or just relaxing and taking it all in before we travel home. In Marrakech there are ensuite twin and single rooms available (Single suppl. £22 per night in Marakech); on trek you sleep in 2-person tents. Guided by Fran & local Berber guide.

12-14 Jun - Low Int Lulworth Cove w/e
Small hotel - Barbara H - Dorset
2 nights full board: £200

A lovely June weekend staying 200m from the sea at Lulworth Cove. There can be an extra walk on Friday afternoon if you arrive by 1pm.

Fuller detail
Looking down on Durdle Door.Lulworth Cove is a very beautiful place to stay as well as being perfectly placed for the coastal and heathland paths along this magical stretch of the Dorset coast. On the first day we might take the path from the village to Durdle Door for a wonderful walk along the cliffs, maybe descending to the beach at Durdle Door if we feel energetic. On Sunday we can walk across the ranges to Mupes Bay, returning past the Fossil Forest. This will leave a shorter walk inland for Friday afternoon if you can arrive by 1pm. These coastal walks are all within the Low Intermediate grade but may involve more 'up' and 'down' than some other low intermediate destinations. We will be based at comfortable, family-run Cromwell House Hotel 200m from the sea in Lulworth Cove. The hotel offers ensuite twin and single rooms, a swimming pool which is heated from May to October, a bar and a separate comfortable lounge with a log fire for cooler months. The food here is excellent - all freshly prepared, and accompanied by an extensive wine list. Dorset cream tea with home-made scones and real clotted cream are a hotel speciality! The dining room has patio doors leading onto a south-facing terrace and garden. Lulworth Cove is easy to reach - a short taxi ride from Wool station on the Waterloo to Weymouth line.

Fuller detail
On the way up Helm Crag with Fairfield in the background. This weekend break with Diana and Sue P offers a choice of Intermediate and High Intermediate walks on the Grasmere fells. You can choose which grade you prefer on the day! For Intermediate walks, we might climb the path to wild Blea Rigg, perhaps detouring for a dip in deserted Codale Tarn. Or the Helm Crag ridge might tempt us with breathtaking views over Grasmere and a fabulous ridge walk to follow. For High Intermediate walks we could extend the Helm Crag walk as High Raise for some superb views of the Central Fells; or maybe even tackle Fairfield direct from Grasmere, returning with all of Grasmere and Rydal Water below us. Guest House - Jean - Gentle walks - Grasmere
3 nights full board: £245

A chance to turn down the volume of your busy life and listen to your inner knowing self. This year, Jean will include yoga as part of this popular Walking & Contemplation break.

Fuller detail

Jean, as a yoga instructor, will also be offering at least one yoga session per day (optional) so please bring a sit-mat and warm fleece for sitting outdoors, and loose clothing for yoga sessions. 19-26 Jul - Gran Paradiso, Italy
Int & High Alpine - Anita & Madeline -hotel & refuges
7 nights full board & everything except flight: £535

A favourite trek into Italy's Gran Paradiso National Park in the Western Alps, staying in a small hotel, then refuges, with a choice of intermediate and high level walks each day (you carry a day pack only!)

Fuller detail
Above Lago Rosset. An opportunity to spend a week in the splendour of the Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy's Western Alps - with breathtaking views all around, alpine flowers, marmots, ibex and chamoix! There will be 2 guides to offer an Intermediate and a High Alpine choice each day (walking with a day pack only - your luggage is transported for you). We start from Albergo Gran Paradiso, Noasca, in the Valle del Orca, making our way over 2 days past beautiful lakes to Col del Nivolet and spending a night on the way at valley refuge Le Fonti. At Col del Nivolet we stop for 3 nights at Rifugio Citta di Chivasso which is perched spectacularly above the lakes of Piano del Nivolet and a whole new alpine valley. This wonderful traditional refuge has dormitory beds, cold water washing, and excellent food in true Italian style. Here there are walks at both levels, with stunning views of glaciers and distant ranges including Gran Paradiso itself, or less rugged paths through flower filled Piano del Nivolet. On the 5th day we return to Rifugio Le Fonti via an old royal game trail - perhaps the best day of all, then back past quaint deserted villages with frescoes to Noasca for our last night. The high walks are 'High Alpine' on 2 days when there is more descent than usual.

The 3 nights of high refuge life are a wonderful experience, but resources at altitude are limited, and taking account of this is a necessary part of the holiday: use water sparingly, hand wash rather than shower; solar power only - no power sockets available; bottled drinking water.

15 nights part board (incl. 5 evening meals) + all luggage: £1105

The Cumbria Way is a long distance footpath through the scenic heart of the Lake District walking at relatively low level… Luggage is transported for you - you carry only a day pack.

Fuller detail
View from High Street - day 5.The famous Coast to Coast walk was devised by Wainwright to link the Irish Sea and the North Sea. It is a route rather than an official long distance path, walking 190 miles from St Bees Head through the Lake District, and across the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, and North York Moors to Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast. It is one of Britain's most popular long distance walks and undoubtedly includes some of the finest upland scenery in England. On this holiday with Marian we will complete the walk in 14 days, with daily distances ranging from 8 miles on two of the higher Lake District days to as many as 23 miles as we near Crossing the Cleveland Hills.the end of our journey (average: 14 miles a day). The amount of daily ascent is greatest early on - ranging from 550m-750m a day as we traverse the Lakeland fells and Pennines, then increasing again briefly as we cross the North York Moors with a great sense of achievement to reach Robin Hood's Bay. 5 of the nights are spent in youth hostel dormitories and include evening meals. The other 10 are spent in 2-4 bedded rooms in small hotels and B&Bs where evening meals are not included (from £12). Packed lunches and luggage transport are included throughout - you carry a day pack only. This holiday is best reached by public transport - see below.

Last year's photos coming soon!

Travel - nearest train station: St Bees station at the start, & Scarborough station at the finish (or Whitby station if you're travelling northwards). This trip is definitely best reached by train. 6-10 Aug - Gentle Derwent Water
Small hotel - Sally - Lake District
4 nights part board + ferry: £300

A 4-day break discovering the beautiful gentle walks of Derwent Water - a real introduction to this lovely area of the Lake District.

Fuller detail
Beside Derwent Water. We have run this popular break from Keswick in the northern Lake District since the beginning of WalkingWomen. There are so many lovely gentle walks to choose from here which we can vary to suit our needs. What's more, the friendly Howe Keld Hotel has just been stunningly upgraded..! Our walks might start by exploring the far lake shore of Derwent Water which has excellent views across the lake to the craggy wooded promontories of Borrowdale. Another very rewarding walk is up past pretty Ashness Bridge and 'Surprise View' into the Watendlath valley - walking beside a rushing beck to Watendlath Tarn with its small hamlet and tea room. Castlerigg Stone Circle will also be within our reach - one of the most dramtically situated stone circles in the country. Or we could take the Keswick Launch to the head of the lake to stroll through Borrowdale's magnificent woods. The Howe Keld is a lovely hotel situated in the 'Heads' of Keswick near to the Keswick ferry landing stage and the Theatre by the Lake. Last year the whole hotel was beautifully refurbished. All the bedrooms have ensuite facilities - twins and single rooms, each with TV, and tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel has a small bar, a comfortable lounge, and serves delicious breakfasts. In the evening we'll go out together to sample Keswick's good eating places. The hotel has good parking, and is only 4 minutes walk from the main Keswick bus stop. Well-behaved dogs are allowed.

Some of the most exciting walking in the Lake District! This holiday offers a choice of intermediate and slow high walks from Great Langdale.

'Slow High' walks are high level walks taken at a slower pace. The holiday is based at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale - a lovely old building with charm and character located beneath the Langdale Pikes. From here we will have Lingmoor Fell, Pike O'Blisco, Crinkle Crags and Bow Fell right on our doorstep. The Coniston Fells will also be within reach, and of course, the shapely Langdale Pikes with magnificent views from their rocky tops will be a 'must' for both groups. Another new Cornish holiday for 2009, offering gentle Falmouth coastal walks of up to 6.5 miles, guided by Sheila Gwyn who used to run this lovely week as a Wild Rose holiday.

Fuller detail
The Fal estuary. The countryside around Falmouth is very lush and beautiful with many rivers, coves, peninsulas and creeks - and is more gentle than the wilder north coast of Cornwall. The walks will be up to 6.5 miles in length - a little more than the normal WW gentle grade. They will take us to such places as Helford, St Mawes, St Just in Roseland and Mylor and also possibly to Mullion, Porthleven and Frenchman's Creek, sometimes using ferries to cross the creeks and estuaries. There will also be possibilities for swimming if you wish. On one day there will be a day off from walking so that you can take it easy and enjoy the area. The holiday is based at the Falmouth College of Art halls of residence (Tuke House) just 3 minutes walk from the Falmouth waterfront and town centre. The rooms are all singles with ensuite facilities and each group of 5 rooms has its own kitchen/dining room (but no communal sitting room). There will be a simple 'help yourself' breakfast each morning, and a good selection of ingredients from which to make up your packed lunch. On 4 evenings we will eat at the Boathouse - a friendly and inexpensive restaurant on the waterfront (these meals are included). On the other 3 evenings we can sample other good eating places in Falmouth (not included - from £15.00). 8-22 Aug - Low Intermediate Kruger
Cabins & Lodges - Diana & Ros - South Africa
14 nights full board & flight (ex 6 meals): £1805

A rich variety of walks in the spectacular Mpumalanga region of South Africa, then 6 days game watching in Kruger National Park!

Fuller detail
Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga. This new South African holiday combines 6 days and nights in the Kruger National Park with day walks from Graskop in the scenically very beautiful and culturally interesting Panorama region of Mpumalanga. Here, to the east of Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Drakensburg escarpment continues northwards, paralleling the Kruger National Park. During the Gold Rush years white settlers built small towns like Graskop, Pilgrim's Rest, and Sabie. Our walks will take us through beautiful indigenous forests or scented pinewoods to some of the striking waterfalls of the area, and across shining grasslands to the edge of the escarpment for breathtaking views over the Lowveld. On one day we will drive north to see Bourkes Luck Potholes and walk the Leopard Trail for incredible views of the Blyde River Canyon (3rd largest canyon in the world). On another day we will walk the Loerie Trail beside the crystal clear waters, waterfalls and rock pools of the Kalishi River which might feel more like something out of Kipling's Jungle Book. Our base at Graskop will be in ensuite twin and single rooms at the Graskop Log Cabin village, making our own 'braai' (barbecue) on some nights, and eating out on others. Then after 5 nights here, we'll drive to Satara Camp in Kruger National Park to stay for 3 nights in 2 comfortable lodges overlooking waterholes (in ensuite twins & standard single rooms). Satara prides itself as being one of the best spots in the world for viewing Lion, Leopard, and Cheetah - hopefully from our 2 vehicles during the day, or maybe coming to our waterholes at dusk and dawn. We then drive to Lower Kruger national park.Sabie Camp for 3 nights staying in ensuite twin and ensuite single bungalows overlooking the perennial Sabie River - an area with numerous elephants, cheetah, hippos, buffalo, and many beautiful birds. After this rich experience we'll drive back towards Johannesburg, breaking our journey at Bergwaters Eco Lodge near Waterval Onder for a last comfortable night in a beautiful location.

Fuller detail
Climbing on crags. Are you a complete beginner or have you already done some climbing before? This new Peak District climbing holiday with climbing instructors Anita and Mo will cater for both levels. On crags near to Hathersage in the Peak District (& climbing wall in nearby Sheffield if the weather is poor), you will learn how to climb safely: how to stretch and warm up; use of static ropes, a harness, and other climbing equipment; and how to belay yourself and your partner safely. You will develop personal climbing skills to help you move more confidently from hold to hold, and how to abseil back down - all great to learn with other women in a supportive environment. If you have done some climbing before, this holiday will help you gain technique and confidence for harder climbs. Before the end of the holiday there will be an opportunity to learn about different kinds of equipment during a visit to a local climbing shop. For both groups, making new friends to climb with is an additional encouragement to take your climbing further. The holiday is based at Hathersage youth hostel in Hathersage village (10 mins walk from Hathersage station). Group size: 2 instructors to 12 women. Helmets, harnesses, and ropes are included. Climbing shoes are not included since some women may already possess a pair (Trainers are fine, or rock shoes can by bought at a climbing shop in Hathersage if you wish).

28 Aug-1 Sep - Low Int & Int Hebden Bridge
Centre - Brenda & Sally - South Pennines
4 nights full board: £320

This new venue in Calderdale is on the hillside just above Hebden Bridge and offers a great choice of Low Intermediate & Intermediate walks in Bronte country.

Fuller detail
Bronte country.Hebden House nestles on the side of the hill above the old mill town of Hebden Bridge in the South Pennines - an ideal base from which to explore the hills and valleys of Bronte country. Some walks will take us through spectacular wooded valleys, walking beside the water as it pulsates and pounds over rocks, hearing woodpeckers, and perhaps stopping for a paddle or a dip! We can visit the unspoilt hilltop village of Heptonstall where Sylvia Plath is buried, and walk the cobbled streets of Haworth where the Bronte sisters lived. Other walks will take us along old packhorse routes and up onto the less-trodden, purple moorlands of the Pennine watershed. Here we might hear curlews and lapwings, and our views will stretch as far as Pendle Hill in the north, and Blackstone Edge in the south. This holiday offers a choice of Low Intermediate and Intermediate walks each day, and you can swap between grades if you wish. Hebden House is furnished in a clean Scandinavian style with ensuite twin and single rooms and a lovely lounge looking out onto a sheltered patio. Fuller detail
Contemplation beside Grasmere. This peaceful meditation break is guided by Jean, based at Glenthorne Guest House in Grasmere. Over these 3 days we will walk and talk, but also find opportunities for silence - stopping somewhere special to sit, be with nature, and find our inner stillness. A willingness to sit in silence and be still is all that is necessary. The caring and sharing of the group will assist in this process of turning down the volume of our busy lives, and participants should leave with a stronger sense of connection with spirit, themselves, and each other. Jean, as a yoga instructor, will also be offering at least one yoga session per day (optional) so please bring a sit-mat and warm fleece for sitting outdoors, and loose clothing for yoga sessions. We will be staying at comfortable Glenthorne Guest House in Grasmere which also possesses an indoor yoga/meditation space should the weather not be conducive to sitting outdoors. Olive groves & scented pine woods… pebbly coves & little fishing villages… a monastery hidden away in a gorge... this is the Dalmatian island of Brac.

Fuller detail
Fishing port of Splitska - day 2.The Dalmatian island of Brac lies off the coast from Split, threaded by lovely old mule tracks through olive groves and pinewoods. Ancient chapels and monasteries dot the island while along the rocky coast there are pebbly coves that invite a swim and small picturesque fishing resorts. Sutivan is one of these - built of famous Brac stone, and at night you can see the lights of Split across the water. Sutivan has no hotels so we do as Croatians do and stay in small apartments, all within walking distance of Pension Dora whose vine covered courtyard and restaurant/bar we will use as our focal point. Here we will share breakfasts, and meals on 4 evenings. On 3 evenings we'll eat out at seafront restaurants in smaller groups (not included - from £8). The apartments are simple and typically Croatian, some with ensuite rooms, others with 2 single rooms sharing a bathroom and small kitchen. Some have a terrace for relaxing after walking, others have sea views. At Pension Dora there are ensuite twins and singles. Besides a choice of Gentle & Low Intermediate walks, we will also take a day off to enjoy the sea, hire a bike or sea kayak, visit Diocletian's Palace, or simply relax with a book! 11-15 Sep - Intermediate Borrowdale
Walking centre - Diana - Lake District
4 nights full board: £305

4 days of wonderful days on the intermediate fells of Borrowdale, staying at the Glaramara Centre near Seatoller.

Fuller detail
Walking towards Haystacks. This 4-night holiday with Diana gives plenty of time for exploring all the best Intermediate walks on the glorious Borrowdale fells. We might warm up by climbing the path to Dock Tarn which will give us superb views over Eagle Crag and allow us to reach Watendlath Tarn. We will also include the fabulous High Spy ridge where our efforts will be rewarded with views in all directions and a lovely descent overlooking Derwent Water. On other days we might be tempted by Haystacks near Buttermere - Wainwrights's favourite fell, or rocky Glaramara - the fell across the valley where we'll pass waterfalls on the way to the summit. If the weather keeps us low, there will be plenty of lovely low rambles through Borrowdale to enjoy. Glaramara Centre, though like a hostel in some respects, has mainly single rooms without a supplement, serves good food, and is fantastic value in every way. Its bar and large comfy lounge both have open log fires if needed, and the general atmosphere is warm and friendly.

12-19 Sep - Low Intermediate Mull 2
Small hotel - Fran - Scotland
7 nights full board, includes trip to Iona : £650

A second opportunity to explore the stunning island of Mull and mystical Iona with Fran, staying at a comfortable women-run hotel on Mull's south facing coast, above a lovely deserted cove with views to die for.

Fuller detail
Stunning beaches on Mull.Mull is one of the largest of the Hebridean islands off the west coast of Scotland. It has a long and strikingly beautiful coastline of high cliffs and bays, with caves and rock arches, and views out to the many smaller islands that surround it. Most notable of these is the 'Holy Isle' of Iona where we will walk on one day. Another rewarding visit might be to cathedral-like Fingle's Cave on the island of Staffa, whose geometrical basalt pillars have even inspired a Mendelssohn overture! On other days we will take beautiful walks along Mull's coastline, stopping at sandy bays, or walking to other famous caves and rock features. Inland, our eyes will often be drawn to the island's only munro, Ben Mor, and from a walk over its lower shoulder there will be striking views back to the coast. We will be staying at women-run Ardachy House Hotel on the south coast, overlooking the deserted sands of Ardalanish Bay and the islands of Jura, Colonsay, and Islay. Iona is only 7 miles away; seals, otters and the elusive Corncrake are regular visitors to the area, and there is a standing stone and Iron Age fort close by. The hotel offers comfortable ensuite twin, double, and single bedrooms, and some of the bedrooms and the residents' lounge have a lovely view towards the sea. Mull is reached by train from Glasgow to Oban, then a magical ferry to Craignure on Mull, & local bus from the ferry to Bunassen where Maggie & Cathy will collect you. Guided by Fran.

A gentle short break exploring the Wye Valley on the borders of England and Wales in Offa's Dyke country...

Fuller detail
Walking beside the River Wye to Brockweir. This year we are moving our Wye Valley holidays to the Royal George Hotel near Tintern Abbey where quality ensuite double rooms are available as singles. This lovely area is steeped in history, and rich in wildlife, archaeology, and industrial remains. In places ancient woodland clings to the steep sides of dramatic limestone gorge, while elsewhere the river is boarded by tranquil meadows. Our first walk will take us across the river and up to Brockweir Bridge before returning along the opposite bank. There is a local vineyard to visit, and we can stop for tea and home-made cakes at the old station. Arrangements

UK holidays and travel times

Getting away for a break! The first date given for a holiday is the day you arrive. We don't walk on that day, except perhaps for an evening stroll to get to know each other. You can usually get into your room from 2pm. Your guide will arrive by 5pm and will leave a message at reception to say where she'll be at that time. Dinner is generally at 7pm - so do tell us if you think you will be late in case we can hold your meal. The walks start at a convenient time after breakfast each day. Their length depends on the grade and sometimes we might change a walk because of the weather. The walk on the last day is shorter, and we are generally back by 2pm for trains from 3pm. However, on weekend breaks and treks - especially if intermediate and high level - we are generally not back till 3pm for trains from 4pm. When booking a weekend or a trek, please tell us if you will need to leave earlier than this.

Accommodation

Lovely places to stay! The accommodation we book for the holidays varies hugely - from charming small hotels and inns, to moderately priced guesthouses, and ideally-located hostels and mountain refuges. The prices are based on you sharing a room with another member of the group unless it says otherwise. Singles with or without a supplement are often available if you book early. All supplements are given as a figure per night. In hostels and refuges you mostly sleep in bunk beds sharing a dormitory with other members of the group. Help yourself to a free welcome cuppa from the Member's Kitchen when you arrive! For much more accommodation information see our Accommodation page

Frequent Walker Miles!

It's very gratifying how many women return for more WalkingWomen holidays after their first experience. So we've introduced 'Frequent Walker Miles' as a way of giving something back to you. This means that if you come on 3 holidays in a calendar year, we'll take £20 pounds off the 3rd one - and again off the 6th!

Trekking

Walking to a new place each day.If 'trekking' to you means days of slogging with the kitchen sink on your back - forget it! We use 'Trekking' or 'Trek' to refer to holidays that involve walking to a new place most days, allowing us to get off the beaten track and reach more remote places like the stunning Western Lakes or a high Alpine valley. We transport the luggage by taxi or porters wherever possible, and on trips where this is not possible we clarify in the holiday description the number of days you will carry extra gear. A trekking day can sometimes be a little longer than a day walk of the same grade and there isn't the same flexibility to take a day off as with other holidays, so please choose the grade with special care. The reward is the satisfaction of having walked there and seeing a new valley come into view. If a UK trek is not circular we arrange transport back to the starting point or nearest station for free or for a small, shared charge (see the holiday description).

Taking time out - other things to do

Whether you walk each day is up to you; it's only tricky if you want to take time out on a trekking day! There are lots of other things to do - either for a day off or after walking. You might also want to walk on your own for a day, or sit under a tree to read, paint, or do nothing!

Travel directions

Travel directions and a list of what to bring will be sent to you with your confirmation of booking. You will also find a lot of useful information on the Travel & Gear page of this website. We confirm the booking after you have paid the deposit. If you would like to see travel directions before you book, just email us for a copy.

Dogs

WalkingWomen has been set up to cater for the needs and safety of women who want to walk. Assistance dogs (e.g 'blind' dog, 'hearing' dog etc) are permitted on all WW holidays and at all UK accommodations we use. Non-assistance dogs are allowed at some accommodations we use (see below), but will only be allowed to join walks if they are well behaved around people and sheep, are under control at all times, do not endanger other women while walking (e.g entangling their lead around women's feet or poles), and are not a large or 'dangerous' breed (like a Rotweiller). If the guide feels that your dog is endangering or annoying other women, you will be asked to make other arrangements even if it means that you cannot join the walk. For this reason, please consider carefully whether your dog is sufficiently well behaved and non-threatening to others before bringing him or her on a holiday - and please let us know beforehand!

Dogs are only permitted at the hotels we use in: Great Langdale, Derwent Water, Patterdale, and Lulworth Cove. Dogs are also exceptionally allowed at Glenthorne when we take the whole guest house for ourselves - e.g Christmas. (Accommodations often charge a small amount extra for cleaning).

If you are frightened of or allergic to dogs, please avoid holidays at the above locations since even if there is no dog ' in the group', there may be other dogs staying at the hotel. If you are very allergic to dogs, please let us know in case there is an Assistance dog as part of the group.

Foreign Holidays - where the flight is included - ATOL

Where the flight is included. We include the cost of the flight and transfer in as many holidays as possible - usually from Gatwick, Manchester, or Heathrow. The holidays in this brochure with flights included are ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority. Our ATOL number is 6497. Usually one of the guides for the holiday is on your flight and will be at the airport to meet you. We send you all the particulars when you book.

Your ticket will arrive near the departure date. Please make sure we have your name as it appears on your passport, that your passport will be in date, and check the ticket for any last minute changes in the terminal or flight time. Airports can be very busy during the holiday period and security queues are longer than in the past. Please make sure you arrive at the appropriate check-in desk by the time given for checking in. Unfortunately, WalkingWomen cannot accept any responsibility if you miss your flight due to arriving later than the check-in time given.

Where the flight is not included

Where the flight is not included - usually due to that route being dominated by one or more low cost airlines - we will include a shared transfer to suit the best/most flights. The advantage to you is that you can gain from low Internet prices if you book early. We will happily book your ticket for you if you don't have the time or the Internet access to do so. The disadvantage to you is that the ticket will be booked in your name and on your credit or debit card at the time of purchase, and if you later cancel you may lose your money (making cancellation insurance essential). Please talk to us before you book a flight at a different time from the one recommended.

Insurance now essential abroad

It essential that you take out sickness and injury insurance if you are booking a holiday with us abroad (insurance against theft or cancellation is also very highly recommended). Additionally it pays to travel in Europe with an EHIC Form from your post office to reduce any medical charges payable at the time if you are ill or hurt. If you want very competitive annual insurance, try Essential Travel on 0845 803 5434 or Columbus Direct Insurance on 0870 033 9988. Columbus will also take an additional 10% off is you say you're booking with WalkingWomen. Age Concern (0845 600 3348) is the most competitive insurance we've found if you are over 65 years. If you hear of a direct insurance company offering better rates, please do let us know!

EHIC: Additionally it pays to travel in Europe with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which has replaced the E1.11 and reduces the medical charges payable at the time if you are hurt or ill in Europe. (Click here to apply for an EHIC online, or phone 0845 606 2030 with your DOB & Nat. Ins number to request it over the phone). However the EHIC won't cover you for everything - eg. mountain rescue - so insurance is also necessary even in Europe.

Insurance on UK holidays?

If you are taken ill at the last minute and cannot come on holiday, you might also be very glad to have cancellation insurance in place. Many companies offer very competitive rates for short breaks, or for an annual travel insurance policy that covers all your holidays over the year. • Every holiday/break price is inclusive of: the walks and guides; any activities that are specified as part of the break; and guides for special interest holidays. There are walks arranged for every day apart from the day you arrive, and shorter on the last day. You can walk every day or take time out whenever you feel like it (this is not possible on a trekking day when we have a new destination to reach).
  • Unless we say otherwise prices include: all luggage transport on trekking holidays; transport to walks or across a lake on a ferry if it's a necessary part of the walk for that day; transfer from a foreign airport to the holiday venue on all flight included holidays, and most non-flight included holidays.
  • All accommodation is included for the number of nights specified, plus full or part board per number of nights (see individual holidays in the Calendar). Where full board is not provided it is generally because you will get a more economic deal with part board. Full board means that all breakfast, packed lunch, & evening meals are included. If the holiday is 'part board' please check the holiday details for clarification. In B&Bs/hotels the price is based on you sharing a room, with a friend or another woman from the walking group. In youth hostels and refuges it is based on you sharing a dormitory. Very exceptionally in alpine refuges we might have to share with individuals not from the group. The price and availability of single and ensuite supplements is given in the holiday details as a figure per night (see the page number referred to in the Calendar).

Each holiday/break clearly states what is included in the cost of the holiday. We are not able to cover costs for any other activity you may choose to do besides walking eg. bike hire, cream teas, refreshments apart from those provided as part or full board, entrance fees unless specified as included, public or private transport separate from that used during a walk. If you are in any doubt, please phone us.
