23-28 Dec 2010 - Christmas Break
|
| Glenthorne - Diana, Marian, Anita & Pam -
Grasmere |
|
| 5 nights full board:
£360 |
The popular WalkingWomen Christmas
Break is back! Again taking over Glenthorne G/H for ourselves! 4 walking groups
each day, 35 women - and lots of fun in comfortable surroundings!
Fuller detail
Does the idea of Christmas with
other women appeal? Walking, getting to know each other, eating well, playing
games, hoping for snow....!? Well, now's your chance! This year we will be
taking Glenthorne Guest House for ourselves again, sharing the cooking or
washing up and generally making merry. We'll be around 35 women with 4 guides,
and since the guest house sleeps more than this normally, there'll be a
relatively high number of single rooms available, as well as ensuite twins and
doubles. Glenthorne has a good sized lounge with an adjoining conservatory
which we could turn into a dancing space on some evenings! There's also a large
dining room and a table tennis/TV room.
One can never promise the full range of
grades at Christmas when the highest fells might be covered by snow or too icy
for easy walking. However with 4 guides available, we'll aim to cover as wide a
range of walking tastes as conditions allow. The variety of the walks possible
from Grasmere is part of its appeal as a Christmas venue. There are beautiful
gentle walks by the lakes or through woods, paths to waterfalls and tarns, or
going higher still there are Grasmere's fabulous ridges: Helm Crag, Blea Rigg,
Grasmere Common, Steel Fell, or the Heron Pike ridge above Alcock Tarn. For
fell tops with wonderful views, we can climb gentle Loughrigg Fell, or set our
sights on the Langdale Pikes - whatever the weather allows.
The meals will be vegetarian (and one fish
option), organic wherever possible, and with everyone helping in whatever
manner they feel able. After walking we can make our own entertainment - bring
favourite CD's and games.
Also bring whatever alcohol you prefer (can
be bought at Booths next to Windermere station if you're coming by train), and
any cakes or treats that you like at this time of year. If we each bring a
present worth max £8, we can put them in a sack and each draw one
out!

31 Jan-7 Feb -
Alpine Skiing La Tania 1, France |
| Suits all skiers, incl.
beginners - Diana & Madeline |
|
| 7 nights catered
chalet - excluding flight: £650 |
Our first 2010 La Tania
week is in February - superb skiing in Courchevel and the Trois Vallees of the
French Alps. Suits all levels of skier from beginners to advanced.
Fuller
detail - La Tania 1350m is a small friendly resort just outside
Courchevel with easy access to the Courchevel slopes and the superb Trois
Vallees ski area. There are slopes here to suit all abilities, and with 15 of
us in total there'll be plenty of company to attend ski school with or to ski
with in small groups. For this holiday we have exclusive use of Chalet Nicole
which has been so appreciated by other WW groups in the past. Chalet Nicole is
run by a small chalet company called 'Family-Friendly Skiing'. The chalet has a
convenient ski-in/ski-out position near the bottom of the red run into La Tania
- just above the telecabine which accesses all of the Courchevel slopes.
Alternatively it's a short walk from the blue run. Chalet staff drive beginners
to ski school in their minibus, and pick you up later to make life easy!
(English speaking instructors).
The chalet has 7 twin bedrooms and 1 single, all fully
ensuite, mostly with baths. The single room is smaller and has a shower
(£10 a night single supplement). The chalet has a good-sized
lounge/dining room on the 2nd floor built around an open fire. There's a sauna
downstairs, and a hot tub outdoors for an after ski soak! Breakfast &
evening meals will be prepared for us by the chalet staff except for the one
evening we go out to eat. The food was very good last year.
Courchevel has snow
conditions to dream about due to its largely north facing slopes, its height,
and its large number of snow cannons right down to the village. La Tania was
originally built as an Olympic village with lots of chalets, après ski
bars and little restaurants. It probably has the friendliest atmosphere of all
the Courchevel resorts. It is approached by lovely tree runs - a blue and a red
- and enjoys very fast access to the higher slopes and a good lift connection
to both Courchevel and adjacent Meribel.

| Centre - Marian & Yvonne - Malham -
Yorkshire Dales |
|
| 4 nights full board:
£370 |
Here is a chance to learn or improve
those skills that keep you safe in the hills!
Fuller detail
Have you ever wished for more confident map
reading skills? Here is a holiday that will give you the skills to keep you
safe in the hills - and what could be more fun than to learn them with other
women. On these 2 holidays there will be 2 guides to cater for different levels
of map reading experience. One group will start from basics with Gentle walks
and work up to using compasses - leaving with a secure sense of how to find
your way using a walking map, and how to find out where you are (and where
you're going!) by using map and compass together. The other group will start
with a compass refresher, then go on to apply compass techniques in more
advance situations on Low Intermediate walks -
great if you've done Maps
& Compasses before and want to remind yourself of what you know and take it
further. These holidays are based at High Trenhouse in the Yorkshire Dales near
Malham Tarn with plenty of tricky moorland and limestone features to practice
on right on your doorstep. High Trenhouse offers many ensuite single rooms, and
good working spaces for extra map work in the evenings - i.e when not enjoying
a drink from the honesty bar or relaxing in the sauna or jacuzzi! Maps and
compasses will be provided (or bring your own!)

£375 |
Wonderful intermediate walks on the
ridges and moors of the Peak District - staying at Losehill Hall where the food
is excellent!
Fuller detail
This Intermediate holiday
with Clare is based at comfortable Losehill Hall near Castleton, allowing you
to get onto the moors and ridges with great views to the hills, forests,
reservoirs and valleys of both the White (limestone) and Dark (gritstone) Peak.
The Great Ridge of Rushup Edge, Mam Tor and Losehill is a 'must', and a short
bus ride to Edale will access the Kinder Edges, perhaps via Jacobs Ladder or
Ringing Roger (great names round here!) Other wonderful walks include the Roman
Road up onto Win Hill for a long ridge walk (perhaps returning via the teashop
in Hope); or the Abney Moor circuit taking in Bradwell which is famous for its
ice cream. All in all, we'll be spoilt for choice. Losehill Hall is a lovely
old Victorian mansion set in its own extensive grounds 10 mins walk from
Castleton. It is the National Park Study Centre, run on eco-centre lines
(everything is recycled, ensuite showers instead of baths, communal tea/coffee
facilities). The Hall has a bar, a comfortable lounge and dining room where

This is the 3rd of
three downhill skiing holidays in 2010 - enjoying the variety and superb
facilities of Courchevel and the Trois Vallees. Suits all levels of skier from
beginners to advanced.
Fuller
detail - La Tania 1350m is a small friendly resort just outside

Somerset |
|
| 4 nights full board:
£355 |
A holiday exploring the Quantock Hills
with Chrissie from a delightful base at Huntstile Organic Farm.
Fuller detail The peaceful Quantock
Hills in Somerset were the first area in England to be designated an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. Standing above the Vale of Taunton, they afford
far-reaching views across nine counties and over the Bristol Channel to the
Welsh hills. Our walks will explore lesser known routes over moorland hilltops
and through quiet wooded combes full of spring flowers where we might see
ponies, badgers, buzzards, and red deer. We will be based at Huntstile Organic
Farm on the outskirts of Goathurst village - a 14th century farmhouse that has
its own stone circle, a spring-fed lake, and woods to explore. In addition to
the farmhouse rooms we will have the use of the Apple Loft, the Cider House,
the Studio, the Summerhouse - delightfully converted outbuildings offering a
range of ensuite twins, ensuite and standard singles. In the evening Lizzie
will cook us delicious dinners. Lizzie and John grow many of their own
vegetables, have a small herd of cattle and "a flock of organic chickens that
lay the most delicious free-range eggs in the world (probably)!" Goathurst
village is easy to reach from the M5 or by taxi from either Bridgwater Station
(5 miles) or Taunton station (9 miles). Guided by Chrissie. (Single suppl per
night: £5 standard, £10 ensuite).

Returning to the Royal George Hotel in
Tintern for this 3-night break on the borders of England and Wales - in Offa's
Dyke country near Tintern Abbey...
Fuller detail This gentle Wye Valley break is based
at the comfortable Royal George Hotel near Tintern Abbey where quality ensuite
double rooms are available as singles. This lovely area is steeped in history

explore Tintern village with its old pubs, tourist shops and craft galleries.
