6-15 Jun - High Alpine Atlas
Mountains Full |
| Hotel + tents - Fran & Saida -
Morocco |
|
| 9 nights part board + all
transport ex. flight: £610 |
A fabulous and challenging trek to the
summit of Jebel M'goun in the Central High Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Fuller detail
This superb trek in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco
takes us to the summit of Jebel M'goun in the M'goun Massif. Fractionally lower
than better known Toubkal, it is the more scenic and less frequented of the
two, and promises a wilderness experience that is definitely high alpine in
grade (involving ascents of 1200 to 1500m on 3 days, and descents of 1200 to
1600m on 3 days). After a first night at Hotel Assia in Marrakech, we will
drive to the lovely valley of Ait Bouguemez, staying the night in an auberge at
Agouti (1760m) and taking our last shower for 4 nights! From here mules will
carry our tents and gear as we make a circuit into the Central High Atlas,
taking 3.5 days to get to the summit of Jebel M'goun, and 1.5 days to get back.
The scenery will be magnificent and hugely varied - terraced green valleys,
traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, strange colours and rock
shapes in the Karstic landscape, and breathtaking panoramas from the high cols
- Col du Roughelt (2860m) and Col de Targdit (3200m) - as we make our way to
our last camp before the summit (2900m). The ascent is non-technical but will
involve an early start and 1200m of ascent in the thin air till finally we are
rewarded at the summit (4068m) with a literally breathtaking panorama over the
whole Central High Atlas. From here we return to our previous camp, then cross
the Oumskiyk Pass the next day to reach Ait Bouguemez, enjoying a well-deserved
hot shower at a lovely auberge in the valley before we return to Marrakech. We
now have 2 last nights at friendly Hotel Amani just outside the centre of
Marrakech, seeing the sights, visiting a few last souks, enjoying the small
hotel pool, or just relaxing and taking it all in before we travel home.

single rooms.
Fuller detail
This lovely holiday is based
near Lake Bohinj in the Julian Alps and offers a rich choice of Low
Intermediate and Intermediate walks from our base at friendly Penzion Bohinj.
There are wonderful low walks beside the lake and through the Bohinj valley
with its low hills and hay meadows full of flowers. Here the Bohinj River flows
emerald with snowmelt, while one of its tributaries has carved a dramatic
limestone gorge that we can walk through. Higher up, there are beautiful
hillside pastures and more waterfalls, refuges, and views of the Julian Alps to
tempt us beyond the Vogel cable car. On one day we will visit Bled for a choice
of two more gorge walks, and a chance to sit in cafes by this other jewel of a
lake. Penzion Bohinj is situated beside the Mostnica River in Stara Fuzina - a

the rooms so that everyone can have a single! The rooms are not large and are simply furnished in a
clean modern style, each with a small shower room. Downstairs is the large

Wonderful intermediate walks with
Sally on the Grasmere fells - from secluded Codale Tarn to several superb
broad-backed ridges
Fuller detail
This holiday based
conveniently at Glenthorne Guest House in Grasmere will have so many wonderful
intermediate walks to choose from! Wild Blea Rigg is always wonderfully
deserted despite its stunning views of Easedale Tarn on the way up, and the
Langdale Pikes from the top. The path up Helm Crag also offers its own rewards
with great views over Grasmere and a lovely long ridge walk to follow. Over
these 3 days we might find ourselves climbing the hillside to Alcock Tarn and
Heron Pike, stopping for a swim in deserted Codale, or stretching ourselves as
far as High Raise for its fabulous views. If we don't mind driving around to
Great Langdale, there can even be an exciting foray onto the Langdale Pikes!

28 Jun-2 Jul - Low Intermediate
Coquetdale |
| Small Hotel - Pam -
Northumbria |
|
| 4 nights part board:
£280 |
A second chance to get away from it
all, walking with Pam in Coquetdale - one of the loveliest valleys in
Northumbria.
Fuller detail
Coquetdale lies between the
Cheviot and Simonside Hills on the edge of the Northumberland National Park.
This Cheviot dale offers delightful low intermediate walking with many
beautiful paths through the valley as well as easy walks up onto wonderful
heather-covered moorland. From Garleigh Moor and Simonside in particular we'd
hope to have spectacular views to the sea at Druridge Bay and north to the
purple Cheviot Hills. The valley scenery is special in a different way: rolling
green fields dotted with sheep as we walk to the pretty hamlets of Holystone
and Sharpeton; views over the meandering River Coquet as we look back down the
valley; or the extensive woods and grounds of Cragside full of exotic trees
which are also a last stronghold for the red squirrel. Cragside is a striking
NT property just across the river from Rothbury where we will be staying, and
it was the first house in England to have electricity. In fact the whole of
Coquetdale is steeped in history - from ancient settlements and Stone Age rock
art on Garleigh Moor, to tranquil Lady's Well pool at Holystone. In Rothbury we
will stay at the Queens Head - a traditional inn with simple ensuite twin and
single rooms, a public bar and restaurant, and a separate breakfast room and
residents' lounge. Rothbury is a picturesque small town with a lovely setting
beside the River Coquet and plenty of small shops and tea shops we can
investigate after walking. This holiday is priced on a part board basis,
including breakfast & packed lunches. In the evening we can eat at the inn
or sample other good eating places nearby (Evening meals not included - from
£12). Frequent buses from Morpeth bus station stop outside the Queens
Head. You can arrive from 2pm. We will aim to order dinner at 6.30pm.

Amazing rock features, romantic ruined
castles, lovely gentle rolling countryside, and 2 last nights in Prague - with
Marcelle & local guide Eva.
Fuller detail
Bohemia makes up two thirds
of the modern Czech Republic and was once a kingdom in its own right centred on
the medieval city of Prague. The Bohemian Paradise region 100k to the northeast
of Prague is Bohemia's most picturesque corner - an area of gentle river
valleys, meadows, and woodland, with fascinating rock formations, superb
viewpoints, and tiny traditional villages. We will be based for the first 4
nights of this holiday at the friendly Pod Sikmou vezi Hotel to allow us to
walk through the famous Prachov Rocks nearby, and visit the scenic ruins of
Trosky Castle with its twin towers named the Maiden and the Crone. We will also
walk beside a lovely lake to the rock town of Hruba Skala perched above a
veritable forest of rock pillars, and on one day we will include the old town
of Jicin - the 'gateway to Bohemia'. For our last 2 nights we transfer to
Prague to stay in Hotel Atos in the centre of this extraordinary city. Prague
remains one of the most architecturally beautiful cities in the world - the
'city of 100 spires' on the River Vrata, with a surviving medieval centre of
cobbled lanes and ancient courtyards overlooked by Europe's oldest castle. In
Prague there will be time to wander, take a walking tour around the most
important sites, see the castle, the old town, the amazing astronomical clock, the statues on Charles Bridge - or
just to sit in cafes and watch the world go by! If you wish to book extra
nights in Prague to prolong your stay, please just let us know. Guided by
Marcelle & local guide, Eva. This holiday is priced on a full board basis
in Bohemia, and B&B in Prague. Plenty of ensuite single rooms available
(Ensuite single suppl. £10 a night).

10-14 Jul - Int & Slow High
Great Langdale |
| Small hotel - Marian & Marcelle - Lake
District |
|
| 4 nights full board:
£355 |
This Intermediate and Slow High break
will have all the fabulous rocky walks of Great Langdale to explore without the
pressure of time at either level. Choose which grade you prefer each day.
Fuller detail
The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel
was originally a farm, then a coaching inn, and has long been popular with
walkers and climbers - especially for a drink at its Hikers Bar after walking.
It is a lovely old building with charm and character located beneath the
Langdale Pikes with Lingmoor Fell, Pike O'Blisco, Crinkle Crags and Bow Fell
right on the doorstep. This makes the hotel perfect for a holiday offering both
Intermediate and Slow High walks. Like on other double grade holidays, you can
choose the grade you prefer, or swap the next day if needed. 'Slow High' walks
are high level walks taken at a slower pace. The dramatic Langdale Pikes will
be a 'must' for both groups, and give superb views in all directions from their
rocky tops. For other Intermediate walks there is wild Blea Rigg beyond Stickle
Tarn with a walk back through Great Langdale; the lovely heather-covered slopes
of Lingmoor Fell; and rockier Pike O'Blisco. For Slow High walks, after a 'warm
up' walk on the Langdale Pikes, we might tackle the nearby Coniston fells. The
Crinkle Crags ridge and Bow Fell could give us stunning views of Scafell Pike
and as far as the Isle of Man, leaving Lingmoor Fell or Pike O'Blisco for the
last day. The ODG offers a good mix of shared and single rooms, some of which
are ensuite while others are standard with a washbasin and a bathroom nearby.

A second opportunity to walk in
Normandy with Diana, via fast ferry from Portsmouth, and staying at charming

half-timbered barns, and even the occasional chateau. The medieval city of
Bayeux is here with its famous tapestry, while on the coast there are small
seaside resorts or the historic stretches of D-Day landing beaches. Behind the
coast lies the Marais - a protected landscape scattered with small lakes,
valuable to farmers, and forming an important habitat for migrating birds. Here
we will be based 30 minutes from Cherbourg at Chateau Bellenau which has a
wealth of history, character and charm. The Chateau offers ensuite twins, many
ensuite singles, and excellent home-cooked meals. In addition, its superb

13-20 Jul - Gran Paradiso,
Italy |
| Int & High Alpine-Lorraine &
Madeline-hotel & refuges |
|
| 7 nights full board &
everything except flight: £505 |
A favourite trek into Italy's Gran
Paradiso National Park in the Western Alps, staying in a small hotel, then
refuges, with a choice of intermediate and high level walks each day (you carry
a day pack only!)
Fuller detail
An opportunity to spend a week in the splendour of the
Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy's Western Alps - with breathtaking views
all around, alpine flowers, marmots, ibex and chamoix! There will be 2 guides
to offer an intermediate and a high level choice each day (walking with a day
pack only - your luggage is transported for you). We start from Albergo Gran
Paradiso, Noasca, in the Valle del Orca; making our way over 2 days past
beautiful lakes to Col del Nivolet at the head of the valley, with a night at
valley refuge Le Fonti on the way. At Col del Nivolet we stop for 3 nights at
Rifugio Citta di Chivasso, which is perched spectacularly above the lakes of
Piano del Nivolet and a whole new alpine valley. This wonderful traditional
refuge has dormitory beds, cold water washing, and excellent food in true
Italian style. Here there are walks at both levels, with stunning views of
glaciers and distant ranges
including Gran Paradiso
itself, or less rugged paths through flower-filled Piano del Nivolet. On the
5th day we return to Rifugio Le Fonti via an old royal game trail - perhaps the
best day of all, then back past quaint deserted villages and frescoes to Noasca
for our last night. The high walks are High Alpine on 2-3 days - with more
descent than the normal high level grade.
The three nights of high
refuge life are a wonderful experience, but resources at altitude are limited,
and taking account of this is a necessary part of the holiday: use water
sparingly, hand wash rather than shower every day; solar power only - no power
sockets available; bottled drinking water.

18-21 Jul - Intermediate
Shropshire |
| G/House - Jo J - Little
Stretton |
|
| 3 nights full board (ex. 1
evening meal): £260 |
A new holiday exploring the beautiful
Shropshire hills with Jo Jeays.
Fuller detail
Shropshire is a beautiful county with
rolling hills, meandering rivers, and areas of outstanding natural beauty. One
of its most striking features is the Long Mynd (which means 'Long Mountain'), a
moorland ridge with many 'batches' and 'hollows' (valleys) to give it shape and
provide interesting walking. On these holidays we will be based at the foot of
the Mynd in the un-spoilt village of Little Stretton, and we will certainly
climb one of Mynd's many valley paths on the first day, reaching the ridge,
then walking to its highest point at Pole Bank. From here we should have
extensive views west to the Berwyn hills, north to the Stiperstones, and east
to Caer Caradoc and Raglith. Carding Mill Valley will then make a lovely
descent, and we can stop for tea and cake in Church Stretton on our way back.
On the second day we might head east towards Raglith and Caer Carodoc where
Caradoc is thought to have made his last stand. This could leave the Golden
Valley path onto the Long Mynd from the west - an altogether gentler ascent -
for our last day. Mynd House is an Edwardian guest house with beautiful, mostly
ensuite twin and single rooms and good views over the Shropshire hills. Each
room has its own character, and most are double rooms taken as singles (Single
suppl.
£10 a night). Two of the
rooms - a twin and a single - form a suite with a shared bathroom and superb
views that takes up the whole of the 2nd floor. Downstairs there is a cosy
lounge with a small bar and diningroom where we will eat on 2 evenings (on the
last night we will go out to eat at the village pub - not included, from
£12). The nearest train station is at Church Stretton - 1 mile by taxi
from where we stay. Travel - nearest train

The Cumbria Way is a long distance
footpath through the scenic heart of the Lake District walking at relatively
low level
Luggage is transported for you - you carry only a day pack.
Fuller detail
A new holiday for WalkingWomen in 2008, the
Coast to Coast walk was devised by Wainwright to link the Irish Sea and the
North Sea. It is a route rather than an official long distance path, walking
190 miles from St Bees Head through the Lake District, and across the Pennines,
Yorkshire Dales, and North York Moors to Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast. It
is one of Britain's most popular long distance walks and undoubtedly includes
some of the finest upland scenery in England. On this holiday with Diane P and
Sylvia we will complete the walk in 14 days, with daily distances ranging from
8 miles on two of the higher Lake District days to 19 miles as we near the end
of our journey (average: 14 miles a day). The amount of daily ascent is
greatest at the beginning - ranging from 550m-750m a day as we traverse the
Lakeland fells and Pennines, then increasing again briefly as we cross the
North York Moors to reaching Robin Hood's Bay with a great sense of
achievement! 5 of the nights are spent in youth hostel dormitories and include
evening meals. The other 10 are spent in 2-4 bedded rooms in small hotels and
B&Bs where evening meals are not included (from £12). Packed lunches
and luggage transport are included throughout - you carry a day sack only. This
holiday is best reached by public transport - see below.
Travel - nearest train station: St Bees
station at the start, & Scarborough station at the finish (or
Whitby station if you're travelling northwards). This trip is definitely best
reached by train. If you come by car, it will cost you up to £150 to get
back to your car from the finish unless there are other car drivers sharing the
lift. Transport to Scarborough train station
at the end of the trip is included in the price of the holiday.

31 Jul-3 Aug - Intermediate 3
Dales Peaks |
| Small hotel - Sue B - Yorkshire
Dales |
|
| 3 nights part board:
£200 |
A holiday walking on Whernside,
Ingleborough, & Pen-y-ghent - the famous '3 Dales Peaks of the Yorkshire
Dales' with Sue B.
Fuller detail
This holiday offers an excellent opportunity to walk
the 3 highest peaks of the Yorkshire Dales. The peaks in question are Whernside
(736m), Ingleborough (723m), and Pen-y-Ghent (694m). Whernside is the highest
and has striking views of the Settle-Carlisle viaduct at Ribblehead.
Ingleborough still shows signs of having once been an iron age hill fort, while
Pen-y-Ghent has the most distinctive shape. Together they form the '3 Peaks of
Yorkshire' and are sometimes walked in 12 hours as a challenge. For this break
we will be staying in ensuite twin and single rooms at the Crown Hotel in
Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The hotel has a bar with ancient oak beams, 2 small
lounges, a beer garden, and a car park. In the evening we can eat at the hotel
or explore other restaurants and pubs in Horton (evening meals not included -
from £12). To keep things simple we've pre-booked a table at the hotel
for 7pm on the first evening. The hotel is located across the river from Horton
station on the scenic Leeds-Carlisle line.

31 Jul-4 Aug - Low Intermediate
Wye Valley |
| Small Hotel - Caroline - Monmouth -
Wales |
|
| 4 nights full board:
£370 |
An opportunity to explore low
intermediate walks in the stunning Wye Valley with Caroline - including a
section of Offa's Dyke.
Fuller detail
This holiday in the Wye Valley offers Low Intermediate
walks based at the Abbey Hotel overlooking Tintern Abbey - an area steeped in
history, and rich in wildlife, archaeology, and industrial remains. The River
Wye forms the boundary here between England and Wales, and King Offa built his
famous dyke near the English bank. In places ancient woodland clings to the
steep sides of dramatic limestone gorge, while elsewhere the river is boarded
by tranquil meadows. For Low Intermediate walks in this lovely area we have a
wide choice. We can walk beside the River Wye and up to low intermediate
viewpoints such as Devils Pulpit. or do a circuit that includes a stretch of
the Wye Valley Way. We can walk beyond Anguidy as far as lovely Cleddon Falls,
and on one day we'll take the bus to Redbrook to explore a section of Offa's
Dyke where the dyke is still clearly visible. The Abbey Hotel has comfortable
ensuite twin and ensuite single rooms (no single suppl. for single bedded
rooms) in Tintern village with its old pubs, tourist shops and craft galleries.
Tintern is easy to reach by road or rail - close to the M4 & M5, or a
6-mile taxi or bus ride from Chepstow station.
