4-11 Aug - Gentle & Low Int

Small hotel - Heidi & Yvonne -
Germany (NB. Dates have changed from brochure) |
|
| 7 nights part board (ex.

Beautiful and varied gentle & low
intermediate walks in the stunning Bavarian Alps.
Fuller detail
Bavaria is one of the most beautiful
regions of Germany, especially around Berchtesgaden on the German-Austrian
border not far from Salzburg (where the Sound of Music was filmed). Cow bells,
alpenhorns, lederhosen, true Bavarian beer... and women having a fabulous
introduction to walking in the Alps! You'll be surrounded by high mountain
scenery, forests and gorges to walk through, and alpine pastures where farms
sell milk and homemade bread and butter. There is also beautiful fiord-like
Konigsee Lake, which we can cross by electric ferry to reach a lovely walk to
Obersee and the 'ice chapel'. In addition, there are old baroque churches like
the Maria Gern, or our path might return via an open-air swimming pool where we
can stop for a dip. Since we're in Bavaria, we will of course never be far from
a Gaststaette in the afternoon - for wonderful cake and coffee! There will be a
choice of gentle and low intermediate walks each day, so this is an excellent
opportunity to find out how much you can do if you're not sure. We will be
climbing some hills, but at a slow and steady pace well within WalkingWomen
grades. The paths are good, and since we're in the Alps, the air should be
cooler for walking. On one day we will have a day off from walking to enjoy the
local spa complex of swimming pools, steam rooms, and brine baths, or to visit
Salzburg for a Mozart or Sound of Music tour (Salzburg is 40
minutes by bus). We'll be staying at the very comfortable and friendly Hotel
Wittelsbach in the centre of Berchtesgaden where all the rooms have ensuite
facilities, and women rave about the breakfasts! In the evening we will explore
the good range of restaurants in town (not included - from £15). Single
supplement: £10 a night. Guided by Yvonne & Heidi.

5-8 Aug - Gentle Wye Valley
|
| Hotel - Barbara B - Monmouthshire -
Wales |
|
| 3 nights full board:
£330 |
A gentle short break exploring the Wye
Valley on the borders of England and Wales in Offa's Dyke country...
Fuller detail
Last year we moved our Wye
Valley holiday to the Royal George Hotel near Tintern Abbey which has proved a
great success. Here there are plenty of quality ensuite double rooms available
as singles. This lovely area is steeped in history and rich in wildlife,
archaeology, and industrial remains. The River Wye forms the boundary between
England and Wales, and King Offa built his famous dyke near the English bank.
In places ancient woodland clings to the steep sides of dramatic limestone
gorge, while elsewhere the river is boarded by tranquil meadows. Our first walk
will take us across the river, and up to Brockweir Bridge before returning
along the opposite bank. There is a local vineyard to visit, and we can stop
for tea and home-made cakes at the old station. On other days we'll take the
bus and walk to the spectacular Eagle's Nest viewpoint or explore historic
tracks towards Angidy. After walking we can explore Tintern village with its
old pubs, tourist shops and craft galleries. Tintern is easy to reach by road
or rail - close to the M4 & M5, or a 6-mile taxi or bus ride from Chepstow
station. (Ensuite single supplement £15 a night).

A rich variety of walks in the
spectacular Mpumalanga region of South Africa, then 6 days game watching in
Kruger National Park!
Fuller detail
This fabulous South African holiday
combines 6 days and nights in the Kruger National Park with 5 day walks in the
scenically very beautiful and culturally interesting Panorama region of
Mpumalanga. Here, to the east of Pretoria and Johannesburg, the Drakensburg
escarpment continues northwards, paralleling the Kruger National Park, and
during the Gold Rush years white settlers built small towns like Graskop,
Pilgrim's Rest, and Sabie. Our walks will take us through beautiful indigenous
forests or scented pinewoods to some of the striking waterfalls of the area,
and across shining grasslands to the edge of the escarpment for breathtaking
views over the Lowveld. On one day we will also drive north to see Bourkes Luck
Potholes and walk the Leopard Trail for incredible views of the Blyde River
Canyon (3rd largest canyon in the world). Our base at Graskop will be in twin
and single rooms at Panorama View cabins right on the edge of the Escarpment,
eating out in Graskop restaurants in the evenings. After 4 nights here we drive
to Kruger National Park famous for the 'big 5' (lion, leopard, elephant,
buffalo, & rhino), staying for our first 3 nights at Talamati Camp - a
small luxurious private camp overlooking a lush valley frequented by many
grazers - and their predators
In the morning and late afternoon we will
take game viewing drives in our two vehicles - resting up in the middle of the
day,
enjoying the view from our verandahs
overlooking the bush or from the camp hide overlooking a waterhole. You can
also join a ranger led bush walk early one morning, or a ranger night drive one
evening (costing approx £20 each). We then drive to Skukusa Camp for 3
nights where we all stay in ensuite single cabins, most of them overlooking the
beautiful Sabie River - an area with elephants, cheetah, lions, hippos, buffalo
and many exotic birds. After this rich experience we'll drive back towards
Johannesburg, staying for the last 2 nights in ensuite twin and single rooms at
comfortable Bergwaters Eco Lodge near Waterval Onder to allow a last walk in
another striking region of the high veld before we travel home.

21-25 Aug - Int & Slow High
Borrowdale |
| Walking centre - Lorraine & Sally - Lake
District |
|
| 4 nights full board:
£315 |
4 days of wonderful walks on the fells
of Borrowdale with a choice of Intermediate or Slow High walks each day: you
can choose each day and swap grades if need be.
Fuller detail
This 4-night holiday with Lorraine &
Sally stays at Glaramara Centre in Borrowdale and offers a choice of
Intermediate and Slow High walks each day. You can choose which grade you
prefer and swap the next day if need be. Slow High walks are high level walks
taken at a slower, more intermediate, pace. For Intermediate walks we might
warm up on a walk to Watendlath Tarn via Rosthwaite with fabulous views back to
the valley. We will also include the fabulous High Spy ridge where our efforts
will be rewarded with views in all directions and a lovely descent overlooking
Derwent Water. On other days we might be tempted by Haystacks near Buttermere -
Wainwrights's favourite fell, or rocky Glaramara - the fell across the valley
where we'll pass waterfalls on our way to the summit. Slow High walks could
start with rocky Glaramara across the valley, perhaps continuing beyond over
Allen Crags, to descend next to a tumbling beck. On another day we might climb
steadily to Dale Head for views of all the Central Fells, then return via
Honister Pass to finish along an old miners track. Great Gable will also be
within our range, leaving something shorter and lower for our last day... For
this holiday we are staying at the Glaramara Centre near Seatoller. Though its
decor is simple and like a hostel in some respects, Glaramara has plenty of
single rooms without a supplement, serves delicious food, and is fantastic
value in every way. It has a bar and a large comfy lounge, and the general
atmosphere is warm and friendly.

near Castleton that offers a choice of Gentle or Intermediate walks each day -
so you can stretch yourself or take it easy according to how you feel.

from Mam Tor by taking a gently ascending route onto this stunning broad ridge.
Intermediate walks will include more ridges and moors - the Great Ridge of
Rushup Edge, Mam Tor and Losehill; the striking Kinder Edges from Edale; Win
Hill ridge with its fab views over Ladybower reservoir; or the circuit of Abney
Moor from Brough or Bradwell. Losehill Hall is a lovely old Victorian mansion
set in its own extensive grounds 10 mins walk from Castleton village, and we've
reserved all ensuite singles without a supplement. Losehill Hall is the
National Peak Park Study Centre, run on eco-centre lines (everything is
recycled, ensuite showers instead of baths, communal tea/coffee
facilities
). The Hall has a good bar, a comfortable lounge, and the food

27-31 Aug - Low Intermediate
Hadrian's Wall |
| Inn - Pam - Northumberland |
|
| 4 nights part board:
£350 |
This 2nd Hadrians Wall holiday of the
summer offers Low Intermediate walks along some of themost scenic stretches of
Hadrian's Wall - staying at the Twice Brewed Inn where we have reserved mostly
single rooms.
Fuller detail
Built in AD 122 during the time of Emperor Hadrian to
"separate the Romans from the barbarians", Hadrian's Wall is Europe's largest
surviving Roman monument and a UNESCO world heritage site. This year's holiday
is based at the Twice Brewed Inn which offers ensuite twin rooms and a good
number of standard doubles and twins that we can take as singles (Single suppl.
£10 a night). The food here is good, and the inn has a prime location for
exploring some of the most spectacular sections of the Wall as well as the
beautiful Northumbrian countryside beyond. There will be milecastles, turrets,
Robin Hood's tree, fascinating Roman forts, and dramatic stretches of the Wall.
On the last day we can walk from Vindolanda Fort up onto Barcombe Fell for a
last view of the wall receeding into the west. In the evenings we will eat
together at the inn (evening meals are not included - from £12.00).
(Nearest train station is Bardon Mill 2.5 miles away by taxi).
