WalkingWomen - Navigation Tips We hope you find these tips useful!

Not all of us at WalkingWomen are regular users of the Internet, so we don't assume that all other women are.

We've tried to design this site for ease of use rather than to compete with the latest thing in web site design! And we've put down a few tips here that infrequent users might find useful - or which are particular to this site.

When you've read all you need, you can click here to get back to the Home page, or click the words Home Page in the menu to the left.

Tips

How to get where you want!

  • How to find the holiday information. You can get to everything on this site from the Home Page - either by clicking a link in the main text that looks interesting, or by clicking a link in the left hand menu or at the bottom of the page. However you don't have to return to the Home Page to go somewhere new. You can jump between most pages using the side and bottom menus.

Extra hints!

A link is a word or phrase that has been wired to jump you to somewhere else. On most sites they are underlined (and on this site they're in purple).

You'll notice that your mouse changes shape when you run it over an active link.
For example: To go somewhere and then find out how to jump back here again, click on this underlined text!

Quite handy really! Your browser always knows where you've been. In fact you could flit between 2 places repeatedly by using both forward and back buttons (not quite so useful!)

Site Layout

  • 13 main pages contain the essential holiday information. You'll find them listed beneath Home Page in the left hand menu on every page.
  • The Holiday Pages contain the holiday descriptions. 'Whole Year' gives you the whole programme in one place, or you can choose a holiday according to the season you want.
  • The Info pages contain just that - information about our Grades, the Accommodation we stay in (ie. all the places we run holidays), who we are, and so on

A menu is a list of links.

On most of these main pages, the menu is designed to stay in view all the time.

  • Photography14 Specialist holiday pages arrange the same holidays by type: 'gentle', 'trekking', 'photography' etc. You can reach them from the Home Page menu and from each other.

The specialist pages are made differently. You will have to go back to the top of the page to find the menu again.

  • 8 Additional topics can be reached from the bottom of each page. They include Contact/queries, Navigation tips, Mailing List, Glossary, Links.....

You won't get lost!
When you jump to a new page, its name in the side menu or at the bottom of the page turns green and looses its underlining. So a glance to the left will usually tell you where you are.

If there's no green link there - like now - it means you're on one of the other pages, ie. the green link is out of sight at the bottom of the page.

  • Information buttons:
Below each holiday description you will find grey buttons that you can click to bring up a smaller window with more information.
  • If nothing happens when you click a button, it means that your 'Pop-up blocker' is set to prevent it working. If you trust WW, you can enable pop-ups on just this site by right clicking the strip at the top of your web screen & choosing the option to allow pop-ups Temporarily or Always on this site.

Unless you close the window when you've finished reading (by clicking Close Window or the small X in the top right hand corner) this pop-up window will hide from view when you next click the main page. You can always bring it back by clicking its tab on the Start Bar at the very bottom of your screen.
(It's best to simply close it after reading, then click the button again for the next holiday).

Alternatively, the same information is to be found under Info pages in the left hand menu: Accommodation, Grades, & About Us.

Moving around a page

  • What on earth is in here! The broad contents of each page are given in the side menu, listed under 'This page'. Clicking on Contact us?' takes you to WW Contact Details at the bottom of every page.

Clicking on any subject listed there will jump you down the page.

Or, of course you can always scroll down a page to find out what's there.

Pictures:

  • Summer! To save space, we haven't put a title under any of the pictures. However you can find out what any picture or photo is about by resting your mouse on it for a second or two.

Printing off web pages

  • Colour pictures on the web site! There is more information on this site than in our brochure, so it makes sense to print information from key pages if you want to read it at your leisure or send it to a friend.

  • If you wish to print holiday information, the specialist pages give you all the holidays of one particular grade - and are shorter for printing than the seasonal pages.

  • Or you can be even more precise by using the PDF file of the Brochure. This is an online file that you can download to your desktop instead of ordering a Brochure from us, and that you can print from - page by page if you wish. The process is straightforward - see PDF printing tips page.

How to print a web page

To print a page, simply left click on the text that you want to print, then select 'Print' from your browser. (This might be a picture of a printer on the toolbar at the top of your screen, or the word Print in the File menu). As long as your printer is attached and working, you will get a printed copy - with pictures!

You can also press your Control key and the letter P at the same time to intiate printing.

NB. Make sure that you click the main body of text and not the menu to the left of the screen - or else the menu is all you'll print. The only page that may not print satisfactorily on older printers is the home page; you may find it's too wide.

A 'PDF' is a publisher file designed by a firm called Adobe, and to read any PDF file you must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. You can download it for free from the Adobe website - click this symbol to get there:Visit the Adobe website

How to bookmark this site - or any other!

  • What is bookmarking?
You can program your browser to remember the WalkingWomen URL (Web address) by marking it as a 'bookmark' or 'favorite' page.
  • Mmmm... it might be nice to come back here again! If you use Internet Explorer, click 'Favorites' on your browser, then, in the Favorites menu click on 'Add' or 'Add to Favorites'. Choose a name for your shortcut - and then it's done. You will later be able to return to WalkingWomen without typing out our URL: just return to the 'Favorites' menu and click on your new WalkingWomen short cut.
  • If you use Netscape as your browser, go to 'Favorites', choose the 'Bookmarks' menu and then click on 'Add Bookmark'. You will then have a WalkingWomen bookmark as a future shortcut rather than having to type it in.

If you follow these instructions while still on this Tips page, your bookmark will bring you back specifically to this page. Or, you can do it from another page on the site such as the Home Page - or indeed from any web site that you want to keep in mind!

Back to the Home Page?

How to get back to where you were!
Wherever you jump to, you can always jump straight back by clicking the Back button or Back arrow on your browser. Your browser is the grey frame surrounding this page, and the Back button/arrow is usually above the page and to the left.
Try it now?
