1-6 Oct - South Downs Way - Part 2 Full
Long Distance - Small hotel & Eco hostel singles - Lorraine
5 nights part board (+ 1 eve meal): £390

This is the wilder 2nd half of the South Down's Way from Steyning to its finish in Winchester. (Day pack only throughout).

Fuller detail
Walking the South Downs Way.This second half of the South Downs Way follows the crest of the Downs from the Saxon village of Steyning through increasingly wild and isolated stretches to the culmination of the Downs near Winchester. Along the way there are superb views to enjoy, and many fascinating historical landmarks, from ancient beacons and a lost medieval village, to the hill where the first semaphore messages were sent in the Napoleonic Wars. For the first 3 nights we stay in ensuite twins or singles at the Arundel Park Hotel close to the station in Arundel - making it easy to come by train. For the last 2 nights we all sleep in standard singles at friendly Wetherdown hostel located right on the Way. There will be transport to walks where needed. The average distance is 12 miles a day (longest day is 15 miles). On reaching Winchester on the last day, there will be time to visit the cathedral before our helpful taxi firm brings the luggage for those leaving by train, or gives a lift back to Arundel to any car drivers (cost depends on number of car drivers). Apart from one meal at Wetherdown, our evening meals will be in local inns (not included - from £15).

8-23 Dec - High Level Patagonia
Tents, hostels & hotels-Sara B & Maria-Argentina/Chile
15 nights part board + flight + 7 eve. meals:
Provisional price £2650

A challenging high level holiday trekking in the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, walking in the dramatic Mt Fitzroy region of Argentina; includes visit to the Moreno Glacier. (Final price in May 2008)

Fuller detail
Fitzroy.Patagonia in the southernmost portion of South America contains some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in the world. It is a land of wilderness where broad expanses of pampa meet the glacially sculpted spires of the Andes. Unique in its flora and fauna, and the wind blows strongly here much of the time. This high level holiday includes the spectacular 5-night 'W' trek in Las Torres del Paine National Park taking you to the foot of the soaring spires of Las Torres and close to Glacier Grey. We will also visit the spectacular Moreno glacier where huge blocks fall off into Lake Argentino to float away as ice bergs. The holiday finishes with 3 days walking in the magnificent Mt Fitzroy region of the Andes, including walking past Laguna de los Tres to reach close up views of Fitzroy's incredible North Face. Though not at altitude, non-technical, with day pack only, the walking in these areas is strenuous with plenty of 'up', and some long days in challenging terrain. The accommodation will be in hotels in Buenos Aries, tents or refuges on trek, and a hostel in Chalten near Fitzroy. Besides the internal flight between Buenos Aries and El Calafete, there will be a total 19 hours of transfer by minibus during the trip: Maria with backdrop of Cerro Torre.north on Route 40 to the Paine National Park, and south to el Chalten. The first and last nights are spent in Buenos Aries with time to relax, take a city tour, see the historic area of San Isidro, or shop for souvenirs. The holiday includes the flight from London Heathrow to Buenos Aires. The final holiday price will be available in May 2008. Contact us if interested. (See WW website Accommodation page for planned itinerary. The price of this trip will be available in May 2008).

What are WW treks like?

Ennerdale & Pillar come into view from Green Gable - Black Sail Trek 2002.If 'Trekking' to you means days of slogging with the kitchen sink on your back - forget it!

We use 'Trekking' to refer to holidays that involve a journey, walking to a new place most days, sometimes staying in youth hostels or refuges for their excellent locations, or a B&B for a little more comfort. Treks allow one to get off the beaten track and reach more remote places like the stunning Western Lake District or a high Alpine valley.

Mule carrying gear & tents in Morocco.

We transport the luggage by taxi or porters wherever possible. If it's not possible to arrange transport we tell you clearly in the holiday details.

However, a trekking day can sometimes be a little longer than a day walk of the same grade. The reward is the satisfaction of having walked there and seeing a new valley come into view. All UK treks return to their starting point in time for you to catch a 4pm train. We can book you an extra night at the end of the trek if you wish.

Some treks stay in youth hostels - here's what Penny wrote about hostels:
Black Sail YH with only sheep and mountains for company! "Women I've talked to since I've been back have said they don't like the idea of staying in a hostel - snoring, their own or other people's, always gets a mention! While I'll admit it takes a bit of getting used to, there's something about sharing a room with other women which generates a sense of intimacy and equality with each other which really helps to make the group gel. Certainly on our walking week when we started out as a small group of 4 then expanded into a group of 10, sharing a large room together made it so much easier for us to get to know and be relaxed with each other. So to all those who are thinking about going on a walking women hostel holiday but hold back because of the thought of sleeping in a dormitory in a hostel I would say: try it - it may not be as comfortable as sleeping in a single bed in your own room, but it's much more fun!" (and you can always take ear plugs just in case!)

Membership? If you are staying in a youth hostel as part of a WalkingWomen holiday or break, you do not need to be a member of the YHA.
