DETAILS

Jane Bowles married Paul Bowles in 1938 and they were known as the oddest couple! Their way of life was seen as unusual  – living together as openly homosexual with both having a range of different lovers. Jane spending most of her time with her lesbian friends and Paul with his gay friends.

They lived, loved and supported each other in their work as writers. They had a life of travel, lots of friends and quite a wild time of parties and entertaining. Some similarities to the Bloomsbury group and they also had many writer friends. They remained together until Jane’s death and accepted each other for who they were. It wasn’t without challenges and they lived full dramatic lives!

Jane was a friend of Truman Capote,Patricia Highsmith and Tennessee Williams and writing was a very important part of hers and Pauls life.

Born in New York Jane suffered the loss of her father in her early years. She also contracted tuberculosis and was sent to be treated in a sanatorium in Switzerland. She spent time in Tangier and loved Morocco. During her time here she spiralled into depression and ended up going to Malaga where she eventually died.

If you are interested in the lives of lesser known literary women,at the same time as discovering a wonderful southern Spanish City, then this is for you.
