2 days
goat guide

DATES Fri 9th December 2022
- Sun 11th December 2022

2 nights

This is our first in a series of walking tours to celebrate the lives of great Manchester women who have helped shape our lives. Elizabeth Gaskell, Emmeline Pankhurst, Carol Anne Duffy, Marie Stopes are just a few. We also have the sportswoman Ethel Lowry and the women footballers of the city. We have hired a private cinema(mini cine) to have a film and food night on Saturday. We end the weekend at the Etihad Stadium to watch the Women’s Super League derby - Manchester City v Manchester United. Do join us to kick off our brand new series of walks celebrating women.

Dates:Friday December 9th to Sunday December 11th

Guide:Emma Fox our local guide and Manchester resident

Walking Grade: 1 Goat as we explore Manchester at a leisurely pace.

Base : The Ainscow Hotel, Trinity Way, Manchester

We chose this hotel as it was owned by Carol Ainscow the Manchester entrepreneurial property developer, and well known lesbian, who sadly died in 2013 aged 55. She was known for inspiring the revival of Manchesters City centre and for kick starting a new era for Manchesters gay Canal Street. Her bar Manto was central to the TV series ‘ Queer as folk’ and a popular meeting place since it opened.

The Ainscow Hotel has been a former brewery and jam factory and part of Manchester rich cultural history. It is outside the city centre but a great location for our walking tours.

Please arrive by 6pm Friday  to settle in and have a briefing with Emma before dinner.

Departure is on Sunday evening after the football.  If you would like to extend your stay let us know and we can  help arrange it.

Two million people a year visit Manchester – one of England’s most visited northern cities. We decided it is time to include this cultural, fun, historic city in the WalkingWomen holiday Programme. We want to help women discover a side of places that is sometimes hidden – the side that showcases and celebrates the lives of women that have helped shape the space.

Manchester has women artists, actors, entrepreneurs, designers, writers, musicians, sportswomen and so much more. Our guide Emma Fox will guide you around her city to tell you stories whilst you walk. You will walk the urban streets as well as the green spaces of the city to see the variety that makes up Manchester.

You will also eat and drink in interesting places run by women and on Saturday night we have taken over a private cinema to watch a film together.

If you need a little fun and excitement for a dark December weekend this may be just the thing. Come and walk ,talk and learn and support some of our women footballers playing a big match!
