This was a hit last year - exploring beautiful Perthshire based in the lovely Scottish Market town of Crieff. Known as Big Tree Country with some of the most impressive woodlands with ancient Scots Pine. Come and see for yourself.

SUMMARY

Date: Monday June 7th to Monday June 14th 2027  – 7 nights and 6 days guided walks and an optional activity/rest day

Walking Grade: 3 Goats (with some Goat 2 walks in between ) We say Goat 3 level as we recommend you prepare and are fit for Goat 3 walks up to 900m. We  do some beautiful walks to discover this fairly unknown part of Scotland. This is a walking and cultural experience. Most of the walks will be averaging 4-6 hours and include uneven terrain and ascents.  All walks will require a level of endurance and fitness. Walking poles are recommended.

There will be some cultural trips and options to have rest times and perhaps a hot box – a hit in 2026!

Base: our base is Leven House in the Scottish market town of Crieff in the heart of Perthshire and a hub for exploring this beautiful area. Once a popular cattle market with drivers bringing their cattle from as far as the Outer Hebrides. Leven House is family run and you can be sure of a warm Scottish welcome with a hearty local breakfast to kick start your day.

Getting there: Meet up at our hotel in Crieff – check in at 15.00. Or there will be one group transfer, with the pick up from the train station in Gleneagles at 14.00. We can advise on travel routes.

Arrivals: Arrive by 4pm latest to settle in and have a briefing with your guide at 17.00. There will be a short orientation walk before dinner together in Crieff.

Departures: There will be an option of a morning walk so plan trains/travel after 14.00 if you would like to walk.

Price: £2280  per person solo occupancy in ensuite room ( this includes everything you will need for the week) 

If you bring a partner/friend and share a room the price is £1800 per person – we will adjust your invoice after paying your deposit of £200 per person.

DETAILS

Beautiful Perthshire is in the geographical heart of Scotland and  conveniently situated within easy distance of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. It has dramatic mountains, glens and lochs, ancient castles and unspoilt nature with many options for walking, hiking and other outdoor pursuits.

It is also known as Big Tree Country and boasts some of Europe’s most impressive  woodlands with ancient Scots Pines and many of these are easily accessible on well-marked paths and trails.

This trip will be centred round the old market town of Crieff from where there are some lovely local walks but we will also venture 1-2 hours further afield by minibus to walk in some of the other areas of Perthshire to experience the diversity that this area has to offer. This will include Loch Tay, Pitlochry, and Killin with optional visits to Aberfeldy and Dunkeld all within a short distance away.

There are 6 full days of hikes and activities.

ITINERARY

Please note that itineraries can always change due to the weather. Our guides know the area and please trust that they will plan your holiday to give you the best experience. Flexibility and a sense of adventure is always helpful. Expect to be doing full days of walking.

If weather is rainy there will be options for shorter walks. Sue will show you maps and discuss options with you each evening.

Day 1 Arrival  – Check in between 15.00 and 16.00 . Be ready for to meet your guide,Sue at 17.00 for introductions and briefing with a short local walk round Crieff for orientation.

Welcome Evening Meal together in Crieff.

Hikes you will do during your week.  Sue,your guide, will discuss with you the evening before each day as they may vary due to weather. 

Most of the walks will be average 4-6 hours and include uneven terrain and the goat 3 walks up to 900 metres. All walks will require Goat 3 level of endurance and fitness and walking poles are recommended.

Walks that we aim to do – the order will vary depending on the weather.

Crieff to Comrie Croft 11.5 kms/7.1 miles – mostly flat Ascent 182m, Descent 212m. 4-5 hours

Local Walks around Crieff and Comrie   – we leave Crieff and walk locally round the area before heading through the woodland beside the river Earn. We will head back to Crieff on a different track and for those that llke cold water dipping there is an option to do this in the river Earn at the end of the walk .

Comrie Croft//Carn Chois  17 kms-10.5 miles  Ascent 862m Descent 827m  5-6 hours

A more challenging walk in the Crieff and Comrie area. Today we will continue our journey west from Comrie Croft which is about 15 minutes away. We walk up through the woodlands,  visit a stone circle and on to Carn Chois at 786 metres for lunch. This is a Scottish Corbett which is a mountain between 2500 and 2999 fet ( 762-914metres) There are 222 of these on the official list.  There are a number of options with this walk that will be considered on the day.

Killin and the Falls of Dochart  10.5 kms/6.52 miles Ascent 200m. 2-3 hours

Minibus to Killin stopping en route to look at the Glenogle Viaduct before heading into Killin and stopping to see the Falls of Dochart with a short walk.

Ben Vrackie – a Corbett  10 kms/6.2 miles . Ascent 700 metres.  4-6 hours

Less than a hours drive away is Pitlochry where we will hike up to Ben Vrackie at 841 metres (another Corbett)  with spectacular views on a clear day. It is likely that we will finish the day with a visit to the Hotbox Spa on Loch Tay which has a sauna, steamroom, jacuzzi and a slide into Loch Tay. Complimentary towels, robes and refreshments at included.Afterward we will eat nearby and then head back to Crieff.

Tarmachan Munro and Ridge Walk  10 km/6.2 miles Ascent 771m and descent 771m. 5-6 hrs

1 hour drive to Ben Lawers National Trust carpark and from there take the well marked path up to the Tarmachan Munro ( a peak of over 200 ft or 914 metres)  and then west along the ridge descending off just before Meall Garbh which is mixed path and grassy slopes. This leads down to a farm track for the last 3.5 kms.

We will also offer a more relaxed day with option for early morning yoga

Visit to the Innerpeffray Library this was Scotland first free Public library founded in 1680 – the area is steeped in history with a heritage trail and medieval chapel nearby.

Visit to Drummond Castle Gardens on the outskirts of Crieff where scenes of Outlander were filmed (pretending to be Versailles!) and the 1995 film Rob Roy. There is a short woodland walk and a cafe in the courtyard.

The rest of the day is free to chill, wander round Crieff with perhaps a little whisky sampling in one of the local shops.
