1 space come available |
| Gentle - Barbara B - Inn or B&B -
Kent |
|
| 3 nights part board: £225
(Inn) or £255 (5* B&B) |
A second opportunity to enjoy this new
gentle holiday based near the medieval Cinque Port of Sandwich in Kent.
Fuller detail
This holiday is based just
outside Sandwich in the village of Worth, 5 minutes taxi ride from Sandwich
station. Sandwich is one of the medieval Cinque Ports like Hastings or Rye, and
although it no longer lies next to the sea, the surrounding Kent countryside is
rich in historical interest while its coastal mudflats and salt marshes are a
Special Area of Conservation. From Worth village we can walk through the older
part of Sandwich and out into the countryside to see Richborough fort and
amphitheatre - possibly the most symbolically important Roman site in Britain.
On another day we can walk to the sea and along the coast to Deal, stopping at
Sandwich Bird Observatory on the way to see what we can see. There can also be
a shorter walk to Pegwell Bay where the Saxons and St Augustine landed in the
5th century AD. You see, it was all happening here! In Worth you have a choice
of accommodation between Solley Farm House - a superb 5 star B&B
(£255) and St Crispins Inn across the road (£225) - a traditional
15th century pub where we will no doubt all eat in the evening (evening meals
not included - from £15). You can arrive from 2pm. We will aim to order
our meal on the first night at 6.30pm. Travel - nearest train station: Sandwich, then 5 mins
taxi to Worth. Click buttons for more

16-19 May - Gentle Wye Valley
Full |
| Small Hotel - Jo - Monmouthshire -
Wales |
|
| 3 nights full board:
£275 |
This Gentle short break is based near
Tintern Abbey in the Wye Valley, on the borders of England and Wales in Offa's
Dyke country...
Fuller detail
The Abbey Hotel overlooks Tintern Abbey in the Wye
Valley - an area steeped in history, and rich in wildlife, archaeology, and
industrial remains. Here the River Wye forms the boundary between England and
Wales, and King Offa built his famous dyke near the English bank. In places
ancient woodland clings to the steep sides of dramatic limestone gorge, while
elsewhere the river is boarded by tranquil meadows. Our first walk will take us
from Wales into England across the river, and up to Brockweir Bridge before
returning along the opposite bank. There is a local vineyard we could visit,
and we can stop at the old railway station for tea and home-made cakes. The
next day we might catch the local bus to Chepstow and follow the Wye Valley
Walk through the woods to the spectacular viewpoint at Eagle's Nest. Finally we
could explore the historic tracks and ancient ironworks towards Angidy. The
Abbey Hotel has comfortable ensuite twin and ensuite single rooms (no single
supplement) in Tintern village with its old pubs, tourist shops and craft
galleries. Tintern is easy to reach by road or rail - close to the M4 & M5,
or a 6-mile taxi or bus ride from Chepstow station.

Scotland - staying on the Comrie Estate in Perthshire with a choice of Gentle,
Intermediate & Slow High walks each day.
Fuller detail
This new Scottish holiday
with Jo Cound, Sue M, and Fran offers a choice of Gentle Photography,
Intermediate, or Slow High walks each day, set in the heart of scenic
Perthshire on the edge of the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. Here
we will be staying at Comrie Croft - a hostel with a difference, located 2
miles from the picturesque village of Comrie with opportunities to walk into
stunning landscapes at all levels of difficulty. Wildlife abounds here - osprey
and kites nest locally, deer and mountain hare are found on the hills, and at
all times of the year there is a rich diversity of flora and fauna thanks to
ancient woodlands. There are many gentle walks with wonderful photo
opportunities in the nearby glens, beside rivers, to waterfalls, and up onto
gentle viewpoints. For Intermediate walkers there are the many exciting
Corbetts of the area - the mid range hills and mountains over 2500ft (760m),
and for Slow High we will have a choice of more challenging Monroes - mountains
over 3000ft (914m). You can choose the walks that suit you best, and swap to a
different grade if need be to take it easy or stretch yourself as you warm up.
At Comrie Croft we have taken the whole Lodge so that we have room to spread
out, sharing with 1-2 other women in comfortable bunk rooms which can usually
sleep a greater number. What's more, half of the rooms have ensuite facilities!
Comrie Croft has good facilities including a cosy lounge and a dining room with
mountain views. Travel - nearest train
station: Perth We will arrange an afternoon minibus pickup from
Perth station to make it easy to come by train from most parts of the UK. (e.g

Gentle grade explained...
Gentle - 5 miles,
average 200m of up & down
Our Gentle walks are
up to 5 miles in length, with an easy-going pace and lots of stops for taking
photos and enjoying the scenery. They stay on relatively easy gradients with a
maximum height gain of 300m (1000ft) - though usually it is considerably less
than this. Depending on where the holiday is based, you might be rambling
through woods, following a stream up to a waterfall, or walking beside a lake
surrounded by mountains. The paths vary with the location, but can be rocky,
uneven, or muddy in places.
This grade is
perfect if you like 5-mile walks or if you're new to 'walking' and want to
improve your fitness. If you walk a short distance to work each day / have a
fairly active lifestyle - e.g. coping with small children / or occasionally do
some other form of exercise, you'll be fine. If you get very breathless on
stairs, you will find it helpful to do more of them before you come.
