DETAILS
We feel it is impossible to get bored of the Isle of Arran, the scenery is stunning and incredibly varied, and there are walks for everyone – gentle strolls to intrepid mountain climbs! This trip is more intrepid for those who want to do more of the mountains.
We stay at the cosy Dunvegan House Guest House in Brodick Bay, just a short walk from the ferry terminal. The guest house has fabulous sea views over Brodick Bay and the dramatic mountain ridge of Goatfell. WalkingWomen have been using Dunvegan House for several years and it is always a popular place to stay. Brodick has the bus terminal for the island, has a number of shops and the main supermarket for the island too.
The Isle of Arran is the most accessible of the Scottish islands, being the most southerly and having a relatively large population.
The Isle of Arran has a little of everything – a high and dramatic mountain range, gentle fields, woodlands, beaches and lovely seascapes. It is also a great place to see wildlife such as golden eagles, otters, seals and red squirrels, though sightings can never be guaranteed! There is a good bus network which we will use to see various different places – from wild Lochranza with its castle ruins and distillery, Lamlash with its views out to Holy Island, the beautiful beach of Kildonan where seals are often basking on the rocks, and to Brodick Castle gardens.
ITINERARY
The aim of the holiday is to have lovely walks whilst also exploring 4 beautiful areas of Arran. The itinerary may need to change to take into account the variables of weather, tides and the needs of the group. The order of walks may also change! Do bring lightweight binoculars if you have them, just in case we see interesting wildlife.
ARRIVAL DAY – Check in at 15:00 at your hotel. Your Guide will be around from late afternoon and will meet everyone at Dungaven House for a briefing at 18:00, followed by your welcome dinner together in a local restaurant.
Brodick is very pleasant to wander around, take in the sights and to explore the various shops including the very good outdoor clothing shop which is on the front.
4 walks to discover the best of Arran whilst stretching your legs. Your guide Amy will give you a full briefing on arrival and choose the best walks for each day depending on the weather. You can expect to do the following hikes..
Glen Rosa & Cir Mhor (799m) – 16.7km /10.3 miles with 1058m ascent
We set off into Glen Rosa, a broad U-shaped glacial valley framed by steep granite slopes and open moorland. The steady climb leads us into wilder terrain as we ascend to Cir Mhor, known for its striking pyramid-shaped profile and excellent views across Arran’s mountain horseshoe. Following the corrie edge, we continue to A’Chir (749m), a long rocky ridge with a more remote feel where we may use hands for balance on short, rocky sections. The descent returns us through the quiet of Glen Rosa, with the blue mountain burn guiding the way out.
Goatfell (874) – multiple options for this peak and we will decide depending on the weather. Expect : 8km 840m ascent
We start at Corrie and follow the open glen, moving from gentle wooded paths into wide moorland with views opening toward Goatfell. The ascent climbs steadily through grassy and rocky sections, giving glimpses of the surrounding ridges and corries as you gain height.
Reaching the ridge, the path becomes steeper with short rocky scrambles in places, before topping out at Goatfell for expansive views across Arran. The descent follows a mix of slopes and clearer tracks back down to Corrie, offering time to take in the mountains one last time as the glen widens below.
Brodick to Lamlash circuit – 14km/8.6 miles 245m ascent
We begin at the ferry terminal in Brodick and head out along the coastal track, moving steadily past fields and onto the shore. The path takes you around marshy fringes and over stepping-stones where the ground is wet underfoot, then climbs gently to Clauchlands Point—an ideal place for a pause and to take in the view of Holy Island. From there the terrain becomes more defined as you follow the shore into the pretty village of Lamlash, enjoying wide seascapes and the gentle breeze.
From Lamlash the route leads away from the road and enters the woodland of the Fairy Glen—a cool, shaded track under mature trees and through the forest serenity. The final stretch brings you back toward Brodick via quiet lanes descending to the seafront, concluding the circuit with a gentle walk down into the village.
Lochranza Loop – 12km/ 7.4 miles 320m ascent.
We begin our day in Lochranza, pausing to explore the white-washed ruin of Lochranza Castle across the water before setting off on the walk. From the shoreline the path rises gently through farmland and familiar village tracks, then climbs into the open moor, where the landscape broadens and the sea-views stretch toward the Clyde islands.
After reaching the high point, the descent towards Laggan Cottage brings a real sense of remoteness. The return route follows the shoreline with excellent outlooks along the rugged coast and wildlife watching.
Day 5 – Departure Your guide will be available in the morning to assist with departures and perhaps for a final wander along Brodick’s lovely shoreline. Departure to suit your own travel plans.
